I've been dropping in and out of your videos for a while now but wow your progress is impressive mate good luck to you breaking into dairy that's my passion, I grew up on my grandparents dairy farm was there every weekend school holidays from an early age 1975 we put In a 6 abreast parlour and a 90 house cubical building slurry store etc I was 6 at time I rember it all I left the farm in 98 my uncle sold up cos of falling milk price and he married a townie who thought all money made was for posh sofas and kitchens cars carpets etc😡still a sore subject in reflection uncle told my my mum he wished he'd passed it to me ,we had 100 acres 70 milkers and followers in northwest of England I'm 55 I still miss farming I'm a digger driver now ,wow you had my full life story 🤦😊

Great progress on your yard. Just on milking parlour if you have the frame and all the milking equipment for the 12 unit. I recommend you put it in. You wil not regret it because the less rows of cows to milk the better. For example if were milking 60 cows its only 5 rows with the 12. But 7.5 rows with 8 unit. I can assure you there wil be alot of moments where you wil be glad that you have 2.5 rows less to be milkling because your milking wil be finished quicker. And i know it from experience .

I know that they are expensive and you are already spending lots of money but I would suggest that you take the plunge and get yourself a calving gate, now here me out, when you are calving heifers in particular on your own the ability to restrain them is half the battle, because invariably they are excited because they don’t know what’s going on and you are exhausted because it’s the fifth night in a row that you are up at 3 am , it just makes life easier on you and the heifer. Also if you have to do a c. Section ( hopefully not in the first few years but you can never tell) the vet will be considerably less grumpy at 3 am if you have the right facility to allow them do their job and you have to remember that your vet might be 5’ 3” and 7 or 8 stone and 3 or 4 months pregnant herself and if someone like that arrives at 3 am to get you out of trouble it’s nice to know that you can at least give them as safe a working environment as possible. It’s something that I have that is rarely used but I sleep better knowing that it is there if needed ( calved 170 last year and probably only used it 3 or 4 times, no sections and maybe used the jack 5 or 6 times mostly for calves coming backwards) you might get away with it if you’re cattle crush was handy to the calving shed but it doesn’t appear to be so think about it and if you can possibly stretch to it, I would suggest it’s kinda important. Otherwise great to see the progress and thanks for sharing. Regards from Wicklow

I totally agree with you. Calving gate or crush head gate in the calving shed is the job. When a heifers head is caught , no more monkeying outa them. I milk fresh calved heifers in the calving gate night and morning for 4 or 5 days to the get them settled and used to the machine. Just run an airline ( 1\2 inch garden hose) from dairy and connect to the dump bucket.. only way to handle heifers on my own

Looking great Kieran, no keen on those hinge clamps for the gate on the pillar they are okay for a quick fix but long term they fall apart, why not (here we go sorry mate) get your welder to weld on 2 bits of the steel pillars then weld on hinges to that that will move your gate towards the wall enough to bolt a bracket on to take up the space that's left, if you understand, enjoyed the video
@philiptyndall4968Ай бұрын
Put a full barrel in for the sump Kieran. You need the dept for the float switch to work. I had to dig out our sump last winter to deepen it

Them walls in the pit have to be put in at an angle wider in the bottom of the pit so your feet is in and you're back is straight when you're milking

@aidancasey75Ай бұрын
Agree with the person that said about the calving gate , if you were to swing open those gates you hung to meet the wall your calving pens would be a lot bigger, I know some of it may not be under cover of a roof but it will give you more space
@seantormey3531Ай бұрын
Well done. Great progress. If I may suggest not too forget to lag that water pipe to prevent it freezing.

Good to see it coming along nicely. We did our parlour last year. The thing i regret most is the barrel for the sump pump. I would have sunk a ibc if i knew as it has to be deep. Where are you thinking of putting the tank?
@thomasodonoghue6933Ай бұрын
Great job. But dont put barrell in pit. Put a wavin pipe down and put grid on it after run it outside to a small concrete tank. Made from two 4ft concrete pipe up on each other when you dig hole just pour concrete into pipes for floor. Then have flow to tank naturally or field. Dont go with pumps as they give trouble and cow hair kills them. Dont have barrell in pit as it will smell and imagine dirty jod of lifting out pump. You can suck out the small concrete tank with vacuum tank every now and then. Catchs all solids.

Best of luck with everything , will you not be very tight with grass for silage and grazing with milking , if I'm right you don't have huge amount of acres ?
@sullivansfarmАй бұрын
I’m matching the number of cows to the number of acres. Roughly 1 cow to the acre.
@jerryryan8769Ай бұрын
If the budget allows see can you get a brisket bored and a neck rail fitted to those cubicles , safer for heffers and cows and they will be more likely to lie on them correctly as a result
@dave291973Ай бұрын
Just a thought on the parlor blue barrel I would make the pipes so at some point u could pump the water straight out the field it’s amazing how much water the parlor puts in the pit
@derekmcguinness6916Ай бұрын
Doesnt the parlour washings have to be collected?
@pumphesh2048Ай бұрын
Kieran when are you getting the ground back that you have leased out and are you milking many in your first yr?
@johnearle6667Ай бұрын
How will you scrape out the cubicles? With the tractor or with a hand scraper ?
@sullivansfarmАй бұрын
Not sure but it’ll be one of those 2 options. Probably the manual one for the 1st few weeks anyway
@JasonculhaneagriАй бұрын
I don’t like trying to pretend ino anything more than any man but with the cow mats, ino from experience that the shit and dirt plus bacteria and all them bad things will build up under them as they aren’t held down at the end near scrap passage. Maybe bolt in either corner would do to hold them down.

@michaelrohan6629Ай бұрын

why did u not have the safety manhole agitating point. outside the feed area ......?
@jerryryan8769Ай бұрын
Because it isn’t roofed
@georgedoorley5628Ай бұрын
@@jerryryan8769 but for agitating and emptying the tank in winter when the cows are on the slats it would be easier to be able to do that in safety and comfort if the manhole was outside the pen ..............
