I just need to say this: as an African who uses an ANCIENT method to stretch the hair (threading), (and my mom, who has used it on me at first), trust me it has NOTHING to do with “vanity” or even “eurocentrism”, which sounds even crazier and i really despise that notion, when it comes to this topic. Usually the shrunken state of our type 4 hair tends to tangle more (which can lead to breakage- rocket science!) So therefore if you stretch the hair, there will be a high chance of reduced tangles. REDUCED i said, cuz tangles are inevitable, however it’s nothing to compare to the amount of tangles that you’ll get from when it’s shrunken 24/7 (I’m speaking from experience). Now that doesn’t mean that I hate my natural shrunken state after wash, but I do want to retain my hair health. If anything our ancestors came up with a great, safe and heatless option, and it’s not “eurocentric” or “vanity-driven” to use it. Unless yall have a perfect strategy of wearing your hair shrunken, while having less tangles and preserving the health of your hair overall, personally im not gonna stop stretching it.
@Jasmine-uu2xo5 ай бұрын
Ancient Africans knew how to take care of their. This "anti-stretch" liberation comes from trying to combat eurocentrism but stretching in the form of braids locs twists and threading has existed for thousands of years before that. Wearing the hair unstyled or unkkempt in some peoples cases (because we have a bad habit of neglect) is not the ultimate symbol of black pride. These anti-stretch girls really want us to walk around with 2 inches of hair on our head to validate their "pride" There are black people with hair 2x the size of their body because they love it and take care of it. Locs twists braids and threading are black styles designed to maintain/retain hair as well as a form of expression and identity. How is doing black styles= self hate?. This girl makes valid points but leaves out the reasons why many black women feel uncomfortable with their hair. There a lot of women who hide from their texture at all costs but can you really sit up on your high horse and blame them? As black women we get judged 10x harder for existing and have to endure racism and conditioning over our hair. You're leaving out the obvious reason many of us don't want to see our hair and it's the texturism + racism we receive from it. Being denied jobs, having people think you're homeless, made to feel less feminine, treated poorly etc..... We can't stop our obsession with comparing our hair care practices to other textures. We want to be like the girls who "don't have to do anything" to their hair. Those girls still have to maintain and take care of their straight/wavy hair. Our texture is tangle-prone and is more difficult to keep moisturized due to its parallel growth. Sebum can't travel upwards with our hair so our routines revolve around stretch, moisturize and protective style to prevent breakage. It has nothing do with not wanting to see it and everything to do with wanting to take care of it. Different textures require different routines. Black women are women too and most women desire traits that are deemed feminine. Why are we being demonized for wanting to grow it out? Ya'll are not happy until we are all bald and rocking fades or super short hair. The new generation of black women are disconnected from that past due to years of colonization and programmed self hate to the point where we believe long hair is not in our DNA and it's eurocentric to take care, maintain, and grow it out. Stretching is not self-hate it is maintenance

@hushdolll51128 ай бұрын
I agree, believe it or not curly hair tangles easier. It’s a fact. Protective styles are stretched states that will prevent tangles and knots therefore retaining length. BUT alot of protective styles we see today are marketed as such but are NOT. I saw a guy say a protective style must protect your edges, ends and roots. Alot of these extremely long braids from extensions are pulling at the roots and removing weak, finer edge strands… how is this protective exactly?? Who told us this lie?? People want to grow their hair but their hair never takes a break. From braids to braids, being straightened etc. Some stylist are also really heavy handed and remove hair manually.. 7:40
@hushdolll51128 ай бұрын
Also the longer your hair, lets say you have waist length hair, means that its harder to go along with the defining process of the hair using a ton of gels, raking through, defining. Having a braid out or a twist out is okay… doesn’t mean you hate your hair. It just means its stretched, wont tangle and knot as much, saving you time on your wash day and retains length.

I find that people who have the most unreasonably complicated hair care are the ones who are desperately trying to have anything but their natural hair texture. The random salves that “stretch” hair and whilst having to keep keeping tension on it all the time will of course make things more difficult. 🙄 Just take care of your hair by keeping your scalp clean and use a conditioner and you’ll be fine. if you’re still desperate for a straighter hair texture accept you’ll need to use heat and that continued use will damage your hair. 🤷🏿♀️

Water gives hydration but you need moisturizer to retain it (or add to it) Your hair has a cuticle layer that needs added protein and oils to retain the moisture barrier. You don’t just use water to “moisturize” your face and body, you use lotion, body butters and face moisturizers. Why is it any different with your hair? lol if you only spray water in your hair day after day with nothing else. Your hair will become dry, brittle, split and break off…
@sigh_yuri9 ай бұрын
it doesnt need added oils, thats what shampoo and conditioner are for, as well as the oils from your scalp, which is constantly producing oil. for skin you use products that are water based to retain moisture bc water attracts water, which means moisture. and i never said you only spray water in your hair - i dont only do that, i use botanical gels to style my hair when i come out the shower on wash day. the reason yall think like that is bc the natural hair industry misled yall into thinking that moisture comes from a product. it doesnt. btw, hair IS protein. you likely don’t need more of it.
@missnicolemarley9 ай бұрын
@@sigh_yuri If you bleach your hair you do need to replenish and strengthen the protein bonds, it’s not all a conspiracy lol if you think these botanical gels are moisturizing enough for your hair long term you will constantly be stuck in the cycle of dehydrating and damaging your hair. There’s a reason why the girls who excessively wash their hair, put it up under the dryer and only use gels, have constant split ends, which is the cause of excessive tangling which leads to having to go back to your curl specialists that end up cutting your hair every 4 months. Then you’re back to square one. This method hinders length retention. I have yet to see anyone from this method have long healthy hair. The proof should be in the pudding….I suggest watching channels: Razorempress, joy-el, Afrikan hairgod and crownofglory to reference how to properly moisturize and maintain the length of Type 4 hair.

I totally agree that first off folks are calling certain styles protective when they just plain aren't, or are using protective styles not to protect or help the health of their natural hair but all to avoid, get a break from, or defeat their own natural hair. However, there are absolutely protective styles and absolutely people who use those protective styles appropriately. As a person with high porosity hair who lives in a very unfriendly, harsh, and variable climate, protective styling was quite necessary and a God send to protect my natural hairs health and strength.
@Mii..8 ай бұрын
I think protective styles stop becoming protective styles when it's causing pain, ripping/pulling the hair and causing it pain, and is causing tension on edges and worn WAY too long (past whatever your hair can handle). Overall, I think protective styles are great and actually work. Coils have been my go to protective style and it's beautiful, twists too, but coils are my favorite. It's all about how you use it and if you're doing it properly. After that, it can really help the hair grow especially against tangles and breakage. In fact, I feel it helps the hair grow without any obstacles (also depending on your area/climate.) Not everyone needs protective styles to grow hair, but doing them, will definitely help it grow at the same time.

the reason people say to only put conditioner on mids to ends is because you have sebum that coats the portion on hair closest to the scalp, but it takes longer to slide down to reach the mids to ends, hence where conditioner comes in. also, conditioners are polymers which can put a film on your scalp so staying away from the upper portion of the hair shaft helps keep the conditioner off your scalp.

6:17 i think stretching the hair without heat is necessary for 4c hair or tighter coils because naturally our hair likes to tangle especially the longer it grows. It isnt a bad thing in itself but i think some people overdo it because they subconsciously want looser textured hair and force their hair to bend beyond what it needs to.

As soon as my TWA gets long enough to start tangling, I’m going to stretch it before styling. My number one goal is to mitigate tangles this time. And lastly, my hair has been growing fine for a very long time now with just the normal washing, conditioning, use of hair cream and weaving. I always thought a bit of hair loss after every wash is normal and I like having my hair give a squeaky feeling knowing that it's clean. I've been getting braids since i was a little girl and i never knew it as something of a protective style. My hair has been doing fine with just using my hair without extensions. There's still more to say but yeah coming on social media and a lot of things being pushed to your face may change your mind on think all the things you were doing before now were wrong. Luckily, I've not really taken much of the advise i hear online about our hair because I realized that all these products don't really work for me. It could be different for everyone but just know what works best for you.

Our hair needs just water and oil organically. All a hair butter is, is a water based product that deposits water onto your hair throughout the day prolonging moisture. That's it, nothing fancy. I have cat-4 hair and just use 5 products if you count shampoo and conditioner. My hair is 22" long and growing like straight hair. The black hair community is just hyper-consumerism taking advantage of our insecurity with our hair. People are just impatient and unhappy with their hair, because if you just wear your natural hair, moisturize it and wait a couple years, it will be long. I have 4" to go, 8 months left to hit my 26" goal, then after that I'm just gonna let it keep growing the rest of my life. Its a lot of time but not a lot of work tbh. I think influencers / social media over does it out of boredom too. Just bored and need some type of content to stay encouraged.

I've washed it daily. It hurts nothing. I don't do it because it takes so long to dry because it's long and thick

Quick question, when you say protective styles....do you mean the ones with extensions? I had this question for a long time because I do lots of twists and braids with my own hair. 😂😊

i mean anything the natural hair community calls protective styles, as in styles that we “have to do to protect our hair.” in other words, styles that don’t leave our hair “just out.”

Bruh I’m so over this shit I don’t even know what to use for my hair at this point 😭 I just bought a castor oil and rosemary oil to massage my scalp but I guess that’s a no go?! Bought a clarifying shampoo that still left my scalp greasy?! Still slapping my wigs on my head to avoid my hair?! I’m tired😭😭

Great video! The background music with the lady singing is pretty distracting to me though.
