Sheep Farming: How Do You Know When Your Sheep Farm Is Doing Well?

Everyone is euphoric, or should I say "ewephoric" at Ewetopia Farms these days. Now that autumn is upon us, we, as sheep farmers, can look back on summer and answer the question "How Do You Know When Your Sheep Farm Is Doing Well?" Look at your sheep and how you feel about what you see. Today, as things are settling in for fall and we are finally getting caught up on all our work until harvest, we can truly look at our sheep and see what all our work was for. To start, as we feed all the various sheep groups, we see the same thing whether it be sheep in breeding groups or rams waiting for new homes or replacement ewe lambs, and what we see is that all the sheep are eating well, growing well, and are feeling comfortable on our farm. This evokes feelings of pride and satisfaction for us, and for the sheep, their happiness is reflected in their interactions with us. This feeling of success is passed on to customers when they come to purchase ewes and rams from us by providing them with quality sheep that will enhance their own sheep farming endeavors as in the couple who picked up a Suffolk ram from us this afternoon. When the sheep are doing well, the customers also do well, and most importantly, we do well, and that's when you know you are doing something right. For us, it allows us now to relax a little, enjoy the sheep and other animals on our farm more, and to fit in some leisure time to do some hiking and to visit family knowing that all is settled down and running smoothly back on the farm. There is still a never ending amount of cropping yet to be done this year and even a bit more haying, but as far as the sheep farming part of our business, things are going well and we are just hanging in until lambing season starts.

Good morning Arnie and Lynn. Hi Pip and Scotty. Great way to start the day. The sheep are very pleased with the fans. Happy Birthday to your dad and the father of a great shepherd. Love your conversation with the ewe. Perfect. You know guys clean what is important to them. 🤣🤣🤣. Thanks for the explanation about using Maverick and it makes a lot of sense but still am sorry for Monny. He is a unique fella. 🤣🤣. Knock Out really produced some good looking rams. Well the ewes with Hamish are lucky girls. Awww. Thelma and Louise;s mom is so sweet. I am glad she is staying at Ewetopia. The rams really do understand their job. Hi girls you are so much a KZbin star. With faces like that how can you not love them. Awww. Hi Tammy. Pretty as ever. Tammy says you can hold off on the work and give me some love 💕 I can’t say I blame them. Going out in the sun in a wool sweater. Too hot. They look so sweet as they stand for a visit. Oh Hi Big Betty. I have been wondering about you. Still looking sweet for sure. A great example for the young girls. More fun to leap. 😂😂. Aren’t you proud Little Mister is doing so much better. Congratulations on the sale of a very handsome ram. Hi dad. 92 years young. I thoroughly enjoyed the video and visit with the friends. Big big hugs to you both. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😉😉😉❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

It's wonderful that you got to spend time with your dad for his birthday! Be sure when you speak with him to tell him "Happy Belated Birthday from Kentucky"!! The buyers picked a gorgeous ram and I can see why he was on your list to keep at Ewetopia Farms! Little Mister is growing up. He was such a tiny little thing when he was born. It's great to see him out there acting like the big guys! Thanks for sharing your days with us and stay safe!🙏❤🇺🇸

Aww the cats look so happy to see you! The fans were an excellent idea. I think the sheep love it inside because it's the perfect temperature all the time. I think you chose the best rams for the job. Knockout and his sons are pretty cool. I still remember when you got Knockout and I like him alot. Thelma and Louise's mom is a good choice to keep since you love her so much and so do I lol! It was so nice to see all of the sheep and to hear how they're doing. That Suffolk replacement ewe was so sweet. The sheep in the field look pretty happy to be there. Thanks for mentioning Little Mister, I'm so glad that he seems better now. Maybe he did want to be a human lol! I bet your customers were satisfied with their new ram. What a cute little rabbit! The photos at the end were beautiful as always. Have a great day Lynn! ❤🐑

It's an amazing thing to watch how the sheep change their demeanor, when Lynn crouches down to their eye level. The wariness and attempts to avoid eye contact change completely, to touch, curiosity and engagement. Btw: could the ewe attracted to licking the rusty gate be anemic? Or is she studying metal work after watching Arnie welding?

Happy birthday to your dad, Lynn! What an awesome age!🎂 I can understand why you put Maverick with the group of stragglers. The ewes seem a bit smaller, so it’ll be a little easier business for a 10 month old ram. Although, he certainly wasn’t afraid of trying to intimidate big boy Hamish at the gate! 😁 Hilton is such a king among rams. I can see why you would give a seasoned boy the group of 40. 🐑 Wow. Those buyers got a magnificent ram! He looked like a show sheep.😊 Aww….Big Betty. 💛

Oooh nooo, they took your ram! Why are Hilton’s ewe’s stragglers? Are they ewes who lambed late and haven’t had time to get their weight back on?
@EwetopiaFarms
@EwetopiaFarms Күн бұрын
@alisoncummins2726 Hilton's ewes aren't stragglers but Hamish has a lot if them. They were ewes that lambed late last year. Actually, all of the last four breeding groups will have some stragglers in them. They are the moms of the April/May born lambs

Thanks Susan. Yes, Instagram used to be my platform of choice for uploading photos. But it too prefers videos now and they are throwing content at you that you didn't ask for so now the site is unfriendly - literally and figuratively. I can't find my friends on there anymore with all the garbage they post. I still do put photos on there though for those interested 🙂@susanmarsh4351 @@susanmarsh4351

Hello Those feline friends who welcome you in the morning are very nice, pet them for me too. My knee started hurting after one bad step and my neck is out, and that's a long shot. The orthopedic surgeon said I'm supposed to wear a brace or pull my knee down, and if it doesn't go down, there's some injections, I'll see. Walking for more than 10 minutes makes me limp. Sometimes, he says, it even pops, but I don't have that. Have a great day and don't let your knees hurt. Yours sincerely, Krasava

A little Linebreeding doesn’t hurt. We have majority or half of our ewe family related by about 4 main queen ewe families. Some of my best homegrowns have double breeding in them. I don’t agree with Mother to Son, or Father to Daughter but cousins work. Never had issues. Follow this rule when I started. Therefore, choose ewes for your initial flock that are related to each other. These may be ewes that are sired by the same ram, which is a good start, but even better would be if they are also related on the dam side as well. If you start off with a set of ewes that are genetically very similar you will find it much easier to find a ram that will work well within the whole flock. Often breeders that purchase unrelated ewes from various sources report that it took several rams until they could find a ram that is a consistent producer of quality sheep. This due to the fact that the initial ewes were unrelated and it took two or three generations until their sheep became a genetically similar flock. You do AMAZING mama and can’t wait to see you more often. Hopefully sooner than later. For real 😊
@EwetopiaFarms
@EwetopiaFarms Күн бұрын
@CityandCountrySouthdowns Lots of people do libe breeding, and we have too but I do believe that it is not something to do often. Inbreeding does have proven negative effects over time, but in the short term, you can get away with it 🙂 I can't wait until you guys move down. That old historical house I sent you is still for sale!🙂
