And the picture on your work desk of the sheep was very cute. We rescued a painted turtle off the highway that some one ran over. Ed fixed the shell and we let it go today. That is very interesting on scrape Australia must be a clean country I have never heard of it we have very few things like that we don't have TB either I watch the UK ones where they test every six months I could not handle my animals to get anything that they would take them from me

Yes, my understanding is that Australia is Scrapie free, and last I knew, won't allow imports of sheep or goats from non-Scrapie free countries.

Yes, I also believe that Australia is scrapie free. I think the US is not there yet and Canada has no rules in place to get there - yet which puts us way behind other countries as it takes many years to be considered scrapie-free.

I'm trying to remember how much I paid for codon testing back in the early 2000s when scrapie was such a big deal in the U.S. (And yes, I used GeneCheck as well. They were great. I don't think the price has gone up much?) (Now, in a hushed whisper: I couldn't help but notice there was no tag number 556 on that list.)

I think that the price is pretty reasonable. It is $11/sample, which is a lot cheaper than having a vet come do it all. I have been avoiding the question of 556. I should have known that someone would zoom in on my list. Unfortunately, he did not make the cut. Why? That eye we were treating in the beginning because it was infected was an inverted eyelid, after all, which can be genetic, so we couldn't keep him as breeding stock 😪

@@EwetopiaFarms, entropion isn't anything to play with. Totally understandable. I can't help but feel like I jinxed him. Bummer. But yes, there was nothing else you could do. I had a ram many years ago (2003 model, I think) that had a turned-in eyelid. I had it fixed, I kept him back, and crossed my fingers. He didn't just pass it on from time to time. He THREW it--as in almost all of his lambs had the same problem. I like changer rams--but not THAT. You did the right thing. Very unfortunate, for sure. But there was nothing else you could do. There's no room for entropion in any flock--much less an elite one. And you certainly can't sell it for breeding stock and cross your fingers and hope for the best. Sorry to be the one that raised the uncomfortable. You have to do what you have to do. I appreciate the honesty, Lynn. Your personal integrity stock, and the integrity stock of this channel, just keeps going up.

@Craig Packer thanks Craig. It is so tempting when you get a really good one, except for that one little flaw, to hold him back but in your heart of hearts, you just know you can't. I knew there could be a genetic component to entropian or inverted eye lids but I didn't think it would pass on that much! I'm glad you told me that story because it makes me feel a bit better about making that tough decision!🥰
