I'm not a knife nut but would love a sheffield faibairn as it's an iconic piece of history and well built and very fit for purpose as life saver. I like a good scandy type bush crafter too. Agreed re are technique and showel/ spade technique too. I like along handle French style shovel over the short type as the heavy handle helps dig imo like a spear also the roundness of the blade glances and help landscaping. Nice vid

@@MarkWildman It’s hard to say. I got into knives a long time ago and there weren’t too many choices in those days (late 60’s) and Randall’s were always my favorites, especially the No 1 with a 6 or 7” blade and a stag grip. Randall’s was making custom knives before WW II and were well known. In those days they were forged ( from O-1 steel), not made by the stock removal method. I always thought that forging was a better method although many favored stock removal and stainless steel. Metallurgy has come a long way since then. I also found Loveless knives very attractive, especially the sub-hilt fighters. Nice look and it was the latest in materials and construction in the late 60’s, not necessarily better though. I haven’t really looked at custom knives much since then, mainly carrying working folders in the field. I always thought K-Bar offered a pretty solid value in a fixed blade working knife. I also have a Sykes Fairbairn knife that I got a long time ago, oddly enough from Randell . It was modern production and painted black. Still use it as a letter opener. Matt Easton at the Scholaglaciatoria you tube channel, did an episode on S-F daggers about a month ago which you might find interesting if you have any spare time to watch it. He’s a sword dealer/collector/fencing instructor in the UK.

The FS sheath was designed so it could be sewn inside the clothing, especially the British Service Uniform. Old Man Fairbairn himself advocated it be sewn the baggy wool trousers pocket, whatever side you preferred, but Fairbairn advocated the left front pocket, as he showed how you could fake shaking (thus immobilizing) the hand of a "target" with your right hand, while drawing and employing the dagger with your left. The Commando Dagger was intended primarily as a tool of sanctioned murder, and secondarily as a tool to viscously slash and stab your way out of being captured..
@MarkWildman
@MarkWildman Жыл бұрын
I have read that as well. I like how the sewing tabs halve holes in them so you don’t need an awl, just a basic sewing kit to accomplish the task

As a lifelong knife aficionado myself, I think I know exactly what your collection needs. Fallkniven A1. Perfectly sized for your paw, sturdy AF, sharpens beyond surgical, holds the edge like crazy… You'll enjoy it, I'm pretty sure. My go to fixed blades are their PHK and F1, but then again, my glove size is M… you should feel right at home with more sword-y A1… 🗡

Used to literally trip over these at my Mum and Dad's house. He was an ex RM Commando that was into working with wood (and making knives....) He was regularly asked to mount these on plaques, boxes etc for Marines and Officers that were retiring. He did have an original copy of the Fairbairn Sykes fighting book that I think he might have given away before he passed:( One of his best friends taught the unarmed combat style to other forces around the World - very scary guy 😂

You need to have kit and know how to use it, 5 c's of civilization, three ways to make fire, 3 ways to purify water, machete/sword/ shovel/ tomahawk, bow and an ability to make arrows, firearms, and nightvision training. Sewing kit, repair gear, traps, slings, etc bonus if you can actually do machete fighting and shoot with your backpack on.

I appreciate a cool looking, well made knife as much as anyone, and nothing against anyone who's into them, but I've got a folding knife in the car, one in the junk drawer at home, and one in my hiking backpack and they VERY rarely get used....like pretty much never. In my 45 years I haven't come up with much need for a knife outside the kitchen. edit: well, sometimes opening packages. But just as often, I reach for scissors for that

0:17 Sorry, Mark but you got ripped off. That's NOT an original Vietnam era Mark II with those saw teeth and black sheath. It's also missing the _original_ 5° angle between blade and hilt to conform to the human body. The saw teeth were added in the 70s, true, but they weren't an original feature.

@@MarkWildman No, like I said the saw teeth were added by Al Mar in order to "de-stiletto" the knife for the pearl clutchers in the Army PX system. The offset is only found on Mark IIs in the serial number range 000001-003750 from 1966-1967. If that knife has an angle someone bent it in a vise.🙂 Black sheathes didn't come out until 1977 and the serial # range 054435-063648. Fine teeth became available as an option in 1971 with serial # range 019301- 023750. I don't know what you mean by Gen 2. But Vietnam era ended in 1973 with serial number 032400.

Considering it's a SHE and 006, maybe they would be put these in the. Hands of the older ladies who were left behind in Ukraine and get visited by psycho rapists who are marauding around wearing military uniforms visiting people's grandma's . Actually same for women during all wars in history, the women (even nuns) "visited" back then too? Although....during war, there may be worse outcome from the rest of the psychos in military uniforms as a punishment for actually defending herself (including in Vietnam) Which is worse for her 🤷 ?
