I liked Mr. Alas' phone dropping analogy. I remember announcing to class that I just used my E-K-A in real life. Not a fight, but I was pulling some juice out of the back of the fridge, bumping the cherries in the front. The jar came plummeting into my waiting Checking hand. Ninja skills means no messes. *I don't have a smartphone.

Holy smokes! I hope this channel blows up! You are both adding so much value to the martial arts community. What an honor to watch these episodes for free. Thank you for sharing! Pikal grip is my favorite because many people don’t see it coming and blades are meant to be felt, not seen. Please consider a future Epsiode on footwork. Kuya Doug mentioned closing the distance in reverse grip and I would love to learn how he does it. Keep up the great work my brothers in arms.

Two situations that are common here in Hawaii that I dont see addressed. Being mobbed for no reason by multiple attackers, maybe being knocked down before you know you are being attacked. Yeah I know situational awareness, but shit happens. Second is dog attacks. There are a lot of unleashed pitbulls that attack. My wife was attacked two days ago and she had to run to my truck before she and my dog were mauled. Ive talked to her about always having a knifec for self defense and now she gets it.

I use the reverse grip because my Spyderco P'kal deploys that way. I love the Emerson wave feature and the speed I can deploy the P'kal. The blade can face inward or outward depending if I roll the knife on deployment or not. I do confess, I've practiced rolling the blade inward so much (because that's how the P'kal was designed to be used), it's now my habitual default.

You answered a long time question for me. Using the reverse grip edge in or out. Just turn it I your had so the strikes will fit the target from the angel that is being used. I’m going to practice this, and thank you so much .

Despise the karambit, long live the dagger! lol ( in langit especially ) eta. I prefer hammer grip when wrestling with knives as well as at distance.

If "playing" with a live blade, don't do it sitting down watching KZbin, When you are sitting down your hands are within the 'triangle of death' and you don't want to drop the knife into your thigh. Also, keep in mind that what you can do when relaxed, is not always what you can do under the stress of a deadly attack.

Very informative! Due to forward weight of a large blade, is there a general rule for grips depending on length of blade? For example, over 4 inch blade, use overhand grip, etc? Or is it really situational?

As each handle is of a different weight, it depends on the knife. Reverse grip is more for when the weight is in the handle, edge out for when the weight is in the blade. Open a small folder, all the weight is in your hand isn't it? Take out a 12" machete, the weight is in the blade isn't it? When the weight is in the blade the blade wants to fall on the target, so if it is reversed, you are fighting against that weight by having to constantly life the weight up to the target, thereby slowing you down. Like a screwdriver, you are better at "throwing" a heavy blade out there in a forward grip. Also, what you didn't take into your thoughts: DON'T go reverse grip with an attacker who has a longer knife than you do.

He starts mentioning this around the 8:00 min mark. When the blade starts getting longer than your hand, wrist to fingertips, then you start working against the weight of the blade.
