i dont live there now but i was born there in 1978,i remember as a child it being industrial,warm old place with giant black building where forging was done,the back streets back in the late 80s were still thriving,little metal works and mills,and the roads were well kept,the houses and old buildings gone and its such a shame because the heritage is lost forever,its criminal to knock down churches but they did those churches had beautiful architect,there was a church knocked down not long ago and the local residents fought tooth and nail to save it but down it went,people were married and baptized there it disgusts me,and whats there in its place,nothing,and the building stood for 100 years so it wasn't going to fall down anytime soon,would have stood for another 100.and the houses could have been gutted and modernized,there are stories in those streets that are gone, let me tell you the houses back then could withstand a bomb blast,not like today's cheap knocked up houses,what a waste,streets and estates just gone.when i go back to Sheffield some times it saddens me looking at it and what they have done by making it a university town,old heritage buildings demolished for halls and residence for students, Sheffield is no longer a town for the Yorkshire laborer but for students from all over to populate it,these old pictures just go to show,so many people homeless yet they knocked down perfectly good houses for nothing but trees and weeds and built nothing there in place of them.im not saying lets not move Sheffield into the future but if your going to knock down a piece of history then replace it with something other than weeds and bushes,many of these buildings could have stayed and other buildings could have gone up next to and around them. i just don't get it such a shame what the council has done here,they knocked down old schools as well that could have housed poor people or war veterans coming home to nothing.big sigh.

i know,i did my work experience there in a pet shop called maces,my dad used to build airfix models and there was a model shop we often went to on the upper gallery,i joined the army at the careers office there aswell,i cant get my head round it,another potential homeless accommodation gone and for what students,not the Sheffield working man,steel industry is drying up so i guess they have had to look to other ways of making money,i can understand that to some degree,so many poor people out there we should be prioritizing over foreign visitors.sorry to go on but im a true old school sheffielder,i was brought up in foundry working family of dee daas,sadly i dont get there much but now but i always think about it.

Even the trees that moved into the demolished sites look soul less, every single image looked so much better back in the day, the city planners did a shockingly awesome job

Many of the houses and other buildings seem to have been replaced with trees or bushes ; Sheffield is starting to become a jungle.

Awwe, it's sad that some of the buildings are no longer standing. However many of them still are. With loads of stories to tell :)

wow i remember the banners warehouse carpet place, it got burned down in the mid 70's.....my nan used to live across the road from there up from the banners store

Born there, but left when 18 months. Left the country after second birthday. Need to visit soon. Looks like real wankers allowed for destruction of an interesting city. Canada’s steel city, Hamilton Ontario, did the same sort of things to destroy themselves.
