More 'before and after' comparrisons, this time in the Darnall and Attercliffe area.
Note the boarded-up pubs. There is at least one more in this area, showing the decline of the british social drinking scene.

I hope one day Sheffield becomes again the powerhouse of steel manufacturing in the world as it was under the British Empire era.

Sadly, Darnall is sinking again. There are turf wars (for the drug market) between the Darnall Asians and the Somalis from Burngreave. More recently, there has been an influx of Slovakian gypsies, who don’t understand what bins are for and find it necessary spit everywhere in the street and their kids play in the street well into the early hours of the morning.

I delivered round there a few months ago. It’s been a while since I was last there, but the amount of litter everywhere was shocking. Where there used to be Asian families are now Slovaks as you mentioned. Quite surreal to see how much it’s changed.

What a superb presentation. Darnall is just as I remember it in the late 1950's, viewed from the double deck tram which I used to get on at Commercial Street to visit my Grandmother in Handsworth.

I LOVE DARNALL.Yes we have have had our ups and downs but since I have lived here since 1964 I think I have a valid voice. The "duke of york" was demolished this month sad to see it go but it has been boarded up for years. Darnall seems to be coming alive again! (we just need the butchers shops to come back)

april dawn a building that's been there since 1825 shouldn't be ripped down just to make the lidl sign more visible to people. Sheffield City Council are pure scum!

NO BETH. Darnall seems to grow and then contact with each decade. Some things die and then things grow. Read up on " charlie peace" !! Darnall was rough then (1890) but in my youth (1960s) wonderful and lovely. Things CHANGE. If they get BAD, wait a little, It will get lovely again

I haven't lived in Sheffield since 1974, (I now live on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia) but looking at these photos it looks pretty depressing in all of them.

(CONTINUATION)On the return journey on the slight downhill of Handsworth Road the tram would pick up speed (I kept my fingers crossed that it would not stop at the request stop) and sway, with the setting sun flickering behind the poplar trees in front of the Moore & Wright factory. I think that there is now an Asda on the site. I moved from Sheffield to Liverpool in 1966.

That is what I often think. Buildings are replaced with greenery, but it somehow looks MORE depressing and totally void of life.

The area was never a paradise but it did have a proud working class culture . The rot started in the late 60s and yes pakistanis did take advantage of the cheaper property prices as the area changed and the heavy industry left . In the last 15 years the place has realy become a toilet . I live in australia now where at least we have planned immigration . when i go home to visit it makes me so sad , its unbearable at times

Angela Mateo So your from Sheffield but migrated to Australia, you do know there were others there before your ilk, maybe you forgot. Pakistanis, clearly you didn’t have any friends who’s dual heritage his from that region, sad to hear. i was born at 91 Burngreave Rd on the 7 Feb 1961. Sheffield to me was home, with all of it connotations. Yes the housing and decay in some parts is bad, however that was due to the people no matter where they came from. Bad, inept and racist politicians and general public. And here your are where they use to send convict giving it the large in a land you didn’t originate from and the ones that do are treated like there doesn’t exist. controlled immigration, my arse. You talk of controlled immigration so long as your in and people you relate too. One race my dear. it actually not your fault but it is your responsibility.

So many of the 'then' photos had buildings I thought I recognised, but when the 'now' photo came up, it was just a road or some bushes! So much of Sheffield was built along the same lines, and London Rd, Abbeydale Rd and Ecclesall Rd are so much like Attercliffe and Darnal were then! Sheffield isn't a bad city, just doesn't quite compete with places like Leeds and Birmingham - it's all down to the council, really! No vision, they don't want the big stores to move into the city, which would be fine if they charged rents cheap enough for interesting independents, but they don't! Grr! Churches haven't vanished because of Pakistanis, they've vanished because there are so few practising Christians in the city... I very much doubt those who bleat about migrants have been to mass recently!

Sheffield has been a shy toil since yonks before1843 when it were founded. There's archaeological evidence of poverty stricken, labourers slums & mills here dating back to the early 16th century.

Sheffield is NOT bad, Its Brilliant. The problem is the north south divide! Well NOT a problem for US. WE say hello to people in the street, Make friends of our neighbours Get along in a Jolly way. Below (in the south) Spivey, yitten and lacking they are (LOL) Watch the tour de france yorkshire stage and see how we welcome people and have fun. If you come to Yorkshire, smile in the street, say hello as you are passing, you will be met with warmth and pleasant smiles.
