I was born in Earsham Street in January 1940, as was my dad in 1906. I left Sheffield in 1955 and moved to Kent but never forgotten my roots. Found this video very moving, can see where my house was on the modern pictures. Brought so many memories back, us kids played in the street in those days.Sad to think the Pitsmore area was called the slums, it wasn’t really, OK ,2 up 2 down and the lav at the top of the yard, but the women made sure the houses were clean and they swept the kerbs and pavements in the 40’s, the word slum is an insult to them.

It breaks my heart to watch these vids , as a Sheffield lad brought up in the fifties & sixties, so called improvement and modernisation , it makes you wonder, personally myself I know what I would rather have .. Superb vids just takes me back fifty years in the blink of an eye…..good old days eh!

I agree Toby. I watch these video's and i find it sad with regards as to what has been destroyed. I think the houses just needed modernizing, new bathrooms, kitchens, indoor toilets etc. There was a beauty to these places that modern architecture can get nowhere near to replicating. There is a warmth and a familiarity to them, where as so many modern housing developments are devoid of any character and soul. It's pleasing to know that i am not the only one who get's nostalgic and sad for a world that has been lost and replaced by one that seems so stark and uniform.

I remember all these old buildings as a young child, but I moved overseas during the 1960's; It doesn't appear to have progressed very much except for the demolishing of some of the old houses.

I think the photos of Darnall Road @ 1:00 show just how tiny modern houses have become, the newest being like dolls houses. Small, cramped accommodation leads to mental problems, which might explain one reason why society is so screwed-up.

No wonder we have a housing shortage - too bloody right! It is the same with the schools shortage ; old victorian school buildings razed to the ground or turned into mosques and the council/government whines about new schools needing building. Our 'leaders' are nothing more than arseholes.

To be fair, all of these pictures are from a small section of North Sheffield. Not saying similar sights don’t exist elsewhere, but it does paint an exaggerated picture.

You forget that Labour closed more pits than the Tories. I am born and bred Sheffield. But left in 1996. It’s turned into a shite hole, so run down in places. Attercliffe a once thriving area. Dead. Speaking of clowns, I don’t hide behind a “S” profile tip tapping on the keyboard.
