Dang, Mr Sheffield! Your mundane, flat affect is making me laugh! You have come a long way in 2 years (before I started watching). You are quite animated these days, which is so entertaining! I’m sure that’s helped your channel. I knew I could come to your channel to find out how to prune my ficus robusta, well, except you haven’t pruned yours yet. But I think I got a good idea from this video. Best.😊

I've ended up with 4 of these, I started off with one but I like to prune mine often to encourage a thicker trunk and more branching and with some of the bits I chopped off I planted those into other pots and they grew roots pretty quickly so now I have 4. I'm going to do an experiment with two of them to see if they do OK in a dimmer spot.

I inherited a 6-foot tall scragley robusta about 3 years ago. I tidied it up and propegated about 5 different pieces. Only one took and is now about 3 foot tall and I’m getting a new leaf almost every other week. By the way, I live in Chicago and this was my first attempt with a rubber plant/bush/tree. I’ve got 3 other plants that are over 25 years old. I’ve killed my asparagus fern at least a dozen times and it still keeps coming back. Love your videos!! Thanks much!

@@ramkishanbhagya8449 😥 I had a similar experience. I've learned a lot from this channel but the best tips were to get the moisture meter and to remove water accumulating in the bottom. A couple of my slow-growing plants were getting worse and worse over the last couple of years. Sadly, because I repotted them with soil that had fertilizer in it, I think it was too strong for them and it eventually killed them 😭 They were both plants that I had for 20 to 30 years! One of them (a rubber plant) I was able to save by taking cuttings from it and planting them in new soil that did not have fertilizer in it. I had to get it from a plant nursery. Because they are slow-growing it's hard to be sure how well they are doing, but so far a couple of cuttings have survived and seemed to mostly be doing well.

I bought one of these plants but didn't know it was a rubber plant until I looked it up. The great thing was it was actually divided in 4 stems in the pot so I repotted and got 4 separate plants. 4 for the price of one. Only 6 inches tall now and of the variegated variety, so I'm looking forward to watching them grow.

The green version (Robusta) is the easiest plant to propagate. Just take a leaf with an inch of stem and place into a jar of water. Roots will grow. Pot up. I love this plant so much, I'm propagating a number to put into the garden for the (short) summer for a "jungle" effect. I'm prepared to sacrifice them, because I know I can root a whole bunch of them quickly, but I'll bring them in and wash them off for the winter if they survive two or three months outdoors in Scotland. Tempted to get myself some of the other varieties too. I don't mind if they grow haphazardly - I just love the leaves and the fulness of them. They are definitely up there in the unfussy plant category.

I have a variegated rubber tree in a pot outside on my verandah all year. It grows really fast in the Mediterranean climate where I live here in Australia. It's well known here that you don't plant them in the ground as you stated they grow into a very large tree. Also, they have very invasive roots capable of lifting concrete & damaging foundations.

home made compost doesn't compact like the store bought one, but what I notice is that it holds a LOT more water :)) so, as you said mixed with perlite helps with both humidity and potential soil compaction. Not sure if it's a good idea but because I like an easy life I'm buying a self watering container (Lechuza has some nice ones) and I'll be adding some slow release fertiliser..hopefully it works. Also a 24w Sansi grow light for 8h a day should hopefully take care of the light (I have a very low light room)

So I just bought a ficus elastica in a tiny pot so he’s about 10 or 11 inches tall (off of the table, not from the soil) from a plant shop down my street and the shop owner told me that ficus elastica likes to stay relatively moist… It does not want to dry out between waterings because if it does, it won’t want to ever branch out. He showed me these little tiny light white dots above the little leaf stems on its main trunk stem and said that that is where branches will grow if you make sure to keep it moist :-) I took a picture of it today because I like to kind of take a picture of it again after a few months because I love seeing how much they’ve grown! Also, he said he waters daily! We both have south facing windows, so maybe that’s why?!

A lesson learned, and a question: my rubber plant looking pretty miserable, so I checked the moisture using the meter yesterday, and it was dry in a couple of spots but I noticed when I pulled it out, the stem of the meter felt damp! I poked it around a couple of other spots and the water was way up! It’s in a large pot so I don’t know if that’s part of the problem, but in the future I will spot check a few different areas of soil especially in the larger pots. It’s extremely spindly and leggy so I was thinking of doing the cuttings like I’ve seen in one of your other video and repot the bulk of the plant in new soil. My general question is, the first time you’ve repotted, should you water from the top to allow water to get to the roots quickly and to help settle some of the soil? In my mind I keep thinking it’s the roots that are sucking up the water when watered from below, but is it actually the soil (in which case I would think bottom watering is OK even with newly potted plants that don’t have roots reaching down that far)? Thx!

Help! I brought one of these home a few days ago from Lowe’s. I put it in a south facing window and did not water it. I noticed that the soil it came in contained very little perlite and was quite wet. I was a bit worried that it might not be well draining enough, but I figured it had growing in that soil for some time and looked beautiful. However, when I came home today, I found a brown spot on one of the top leaves on its edge. I am considering changing the soil to one with perlite in it. Am I over reacting? Is it just the trauma of being moved to my house? Will I hurt it more if I add perlite to the soil? Lol noob to the plant world. Advice appreciated. Don’t worry I won’t hold you responsible for the results.😂l
@SheffieldMadePlants

The south facing window might be too much sun for it. They prefer indirect light with a bit of sun. Changing the soil won’t harm it if you think it’s not very good. Have a look at the roots. Are any black and mushy. That’s root rot from overwatering and poor soil

I have a rubber plant just like the one on the left in your video. It was given to me by a 90+ year old lady when she moved. She had it for years! It’s all stem, however, with the lovely leaves on the end of the branches. The branches are also all over the place. It’s such a mess (cosmetically) but VERY healthy. What can I do to corral it again? If I cut the branches back, there will be nothing on the plant and it will looks just like sticks sticking out of the dirt. Would love any tips you have. Thank you.

Do you have a video on ficus lyrata? Very popular here, usually called just "ficus" or "Indian fig". I've had one for decades that I often cannot believe is still living as many times I thought it was at death's door. I would like to make a happier life for it, though. I try to search but didn't come across that particular variety. Thx!

@@SheffieldMadePlants my bad, in doing my web search I attached the wrong botanical name to it. The plant I'm thinking of is "weeping fig tree" or "Ficus benjamina". The gracile houseplant with leaves approximately 2 in. and pointy at each end.

@@SheffieldMadePlants excellent! I'm definitely on a mission now! LOL I won't be without the new moisture meter, and another light lamp just arrived today. Just from the first time this week using the moisture meter and watering appropriately, plus dusting the plants they are already looking better! Picking up some stakes today, and I think that will make the plants that need them happier.

I got a small rubber plant with 2 stems, have placed it near south facing window and the plant gets morning sunlight till 10.30am and indirect sunlight for the rest of the day. Initially the new leaves which came out were perfect, but off late the leaves on one of the stems are very damaged, they are incomplete and disfigured. Whereas the second steam is giving out healthy full leaves. What could be the problem, please help.

Leaf deformity is usually a watering problem - too dry or too wet. How's the soil?

@@SheffieldMadePlants It was too wet when i repotted it last. Usually water it once the top 2 inches is dry, but it was in a plastic pot and may b that retains water for long. When i repotted it, it was quite wet.

I love my rubber plant so much and I did some mistakes in the beginning (last year). I never watered it until water came out but only like a few glasses every few weeks. I was scared that I would over water it at once. It grew super small leaves last year and there is no grow eversince. BUT now I water it through maybe all 3-4 weeks and basically all leaves are super wrinkly now. Also the stem became brown and patchy. Are the roots rotten? I'm lost

@@SheffieldMadePlants oh man I just took the plant out and the soil was dry and hard as stone. But not mushy at all. I removed the soil a bit but didn't untangle the core. I took some fresh soil and drowned that thing in water😂. I wonder how long it will take until I will see a result?

I got one online, when it arrived it was crammed into a small nursery pot so I moved it to a larger one. It originally had 5 leaves. One went black from the base up and came off, another fell off, so I have that in perlite. The very top leaf is quite limp and soft, whilst the bottom leaf is drooping. I checked the soil and it's not too wet, the roots are quite long, but not rootbound. I put it under a grow light and that caused further wilting to the top leaf. Any suggestions?

I've got this with my Tineke at the moment. Really not sure why though. All my others are fine but this one is slowly dying. Check the roots and see if anything is rotting. Other than that they really like lots of light
