I'm a firm advocate of using the weight the pot for a gauge as to water or not. It's the way nurserymen determine whether to water or not.

I don’t know the rules. I listen to videos like this or call my sister. I do mind which plants thrive in dry/wet, and whether what i did resulted in yellowing, wilting, or green but falling off. I fret a little then try to recall what fixed it the last time. - Does my plant benefit from when i’m talking at it? Maybe not. I think I do. It’s non-judgmental, quiet, and its growth or recovery is soothing to see. Occasionally I have to pick up after them but unlike a dog, I don’t have to walk them. They make us feel good.

"Don't rip them apart..." Sooooo....I bought one of those holiday plant arrangements with 3 different types of plant in it and let me tell you...I had scissors, was tickling the roots, stabbed with my special fork, and ripping roots apart. I have never seen any plant more rootbound in my 30+ years of plant care. 5 (very thirsty) plants shoved into a square 10" pot. The roots still have corners. Happy to report all that I not only have two new massive plants but they are happy- despite me being a savage beast. Still have no idea what roots belong to which plant... Sometimes, Rich, you have to let your inner He-Man out. hahahaha Thanks for these little tips videos- they are awesome.

Good Morning from Colorado Springs Mr Sheffield Love your little changes for your plant buddies in your new home!!! So glad you keep trying to help folks learn about plant care!! My Snake plant actually is actually blooming right now... I started "flash watering" where I water her but just like rain and no sitting in water about once every 2-3 weeks. I use terracotta on alot of plants that need the good and wet but dry out without staying soggy. Hope your week is wonderful!!

Good morning, Mr Sheffield! Your moisture meter was a total game changer for me, thank you! It's ridiculously easy to use, and the only electronic app thingy I use now is a reminder I set on my phone calendar noting on a day when to check my plant for dryness and what date they were last watered. I only have space for 7 plants but they look like a very happy and growing bunch, new leaves aplenty even now in January. Cheers!

Watching your videos had made taking care of *most* of my plants actually easy. I had a calathea medallion on the verge of death. fast forward two months of watered down fertilization every watering and water conditioner and it’s putting out new leaves left and right. And getting taller as well! Now I’m just waiting for the next minor inconvenience to cripple it again. Thank you for the constantly helpful content!

One tip that helped me... The same natural environment your plants grow in isn't the care you need in your house. Winter is my heaviest watering season because the heat dries out the air. I put lots of plants in my windows even low light plants and rotate them out come summer. And I rarely use pots with drainage holes. 😎

The moisture meter is the one the tool that’s made the most difference to my plants. I don’t have a watering schedule. I only water when the plant is dry and I never have watering-related issues. I use tap water and Stress Coat. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It’s really helped me out.

Here's a tip I found out that adding 1000mg of Vitamin C can be used to remove Chloramine in water. So if you have a huge bucket(I use a tote bin cause it's cheaper) Add 1 tablet of vit C to 5 gallons of water let it melt and there you go! Oh and yeah aquarium water is the best if you have fish pets.

The window glass probably blocks a good amount of UV, so the light is probably not as harsh as direct sunlight outdoors.

makes sense. something i discovered recently was that my tradescantia zebrina may have actually been fine to start because when i propagated it i saw it was happy so just let it be a water plant and i discovered from there and finally finding the right info online that they don't grow deep roots, they're only about 2 inches long and uproot easily. They basically grow roots wherever a node touches damp soil or water for awhile, and those stems break easily, it's part of how they creep along. Basically they only grow on the surface, a shallow planter makes more sense for them and i'm thinking of some neat and more fitting ideas. I tore apart a perfectly good plant because of a fragility it's meant to have, big oops and a good example in why advice meant for all plants isn't realistic at all.

Going bigger makes since... I've heard that if you have a bonsai and want to grow the trunk thicker then take it out of the small bonsai pot and stick it in the ground to grow... 🤔

I have more than hundred plant and i'm very busy with not really watering calendar. My trick to not over or underwatering is very simple, i lift a little the pot and see if its weight is too light or heavy. Like that i now the entiere humidity of the soil, not only the surface.

And about terracotta pot (around 9:20), well, the soil ISN'T supposed to be "breathing". There will always be void and oxygene (even more if you have big pot and put earthworms in it 😉), but in nature only few centimeter of topsoil are oxygenated. Most of soil's microorganism need anaerobic place !

Hello Mr. Sheffield, hope things are going well in your new home. Any chance of a follow up video about Mycorrhizal Fungi?? I've had amazing results thanks to your last video. I did an experiment with my 2 Swedish Ivy plants. The newer plant got it and the old one didn't. The one that got Mycorrhizal Fungi has grown so much that even my husband noticed! The leaves themselves are much bigger than the older plant. My Monstera is pushing out it's first aerial root. (It's so cute!) My Kalanchoe is blooming. I've had such good luck with Mycorrhizal Fungi. I find it fascinating. Thanks you!

Another great app is called Greg. It has a plethora of tools. One will set a schedule according to your needs. It will set for watering fewer plants at a time and watering more frequently, watering many at one time so you can water less frequently or a balance of the two. It’s great and has a fabulous friendly, courteous, and giving community of plant lovers ready to help with any question. FABULOUS!

Great video. I am having a hard time with some white powdery stuff on the soil of my carnivorous plants. Well if I were to allow my plants to get use to the humidity in my home they would turn to dust ! I live in the desert and if I would like to have tropical plants then I use a humidifier Just as you need to use (lots) of grow lights in your low light areas I think everyone needs to look at their own environments None of the plants that we bring into our homes are indigenous to where we live (cactus and succulents yes where I live) But we want "Tropical s " How many of us live in the jungle? I agree that spraying plants is not a good idea High mineral content in the water can damage leaves

Like Rich says, plants like light!
