Good demo....there is a 'slur and cut' style which was taught around Leitrim and Longford..great demo on Roll. Ther is no mystery about this stuff ....well done!
@KatyAdelson10 жыл бұрын
I like the three-note-slur idea for reels--I'm going to try that! There's also a bowed cut (I think it's called that??) that's fun to do when there are repeating notes. ^^

A few comments-Sheila: you are a great teacher; just excellent the way you break it down, and your body position is such a great lesson in itself. HOWEVER, the camera keeps going to your fingers just when I want to watch your bow. As a matter of fact, this lesson is all about slurring, which is bow work. There should be no finger shots. Another comment: Bob- on most of your videos, I'd like to see the player playing, pleeeeeeeeeeze....

Sheila I thought this tutorial was WONDERFUL (except perhaps for the cuts to the fingerboard, as someone else mentioned - not helpful in a BOWING tutorial!). I am sure I am on the verge of a breakthrough with my playing. It's all very well for people to say "watch other people", but it's all over so fast in a session, so it was great to have a blow by blow account of one good way to play this tune. Now I know this may seem greedy... but is there any way you could do another tune, eg Christmas Eve, or Bank of Ireland, or any other reel of your choice, to go with the Priest? Pretty please?
@venturini0911 жыл бұрын
Where are you getting the idea that this is a BOWING tutorial (just because she mentions cross-bowing?) The technique being shown is a FINGERBOARD technique.
@jorgeduartefilho340211 жыл бұрын
venturini09 Actually the title does say "Slurring in Irish Fiddle Music" she was showing a peculiarity in irish fiddle musics but +Margaret Blurton actually has a point. I do love this tutorial and I'm already able to play this tune. Thanks for the time to make this tutorial.

Carrie Pascoal Kopczinski go to thesession.org. search The Musical Priest. You will get some sheet music. There will probably be different versions of the tune there. Alternatively you can do an image search for The Musical Priest and find some printed music. She plays a version that is quite standard with highly classical leanings. You will find, as you explore traditional Irish music there are subtle variations player by player, area by area. But the basic tune remains recognizable. Kevin Burke has a youtube video where he plays this tune as the 4th in a set.

Actually, It's the musical priest... and (IMO) - done very mechanically, overly fast, with very mechanical rolls and grace notes- 100% CLASSIClLIST-There was no feeling put into it.. no "lift" or "lilt"... have a listen to some tradtionalists playing it, and you'll hear a huge difference! To be fair, however, she does a fine job of directing how the piece evolves; but lacks direction in emphasizing down-bowing technique- essential in playiing Irish tunes.

I checked your channel for videos of your playing or instructing. None were to be found. Since you are such an expert I suggest that you share your remarkable talents.
@danroseberry10 жыл бұрын
James, it is in my humble opinion that you do not understand the difference between playing for instructional purposes and playing for entertainment and musical expression. If Sheila were playing this same piece to entertain us, you would find it to sound quite different from this instructional portion. Your foolish remarks are potentially harmful to the instructor as well as a nuisance to those who understand what is trying to be accomplished here.
@notimportant42689 жыл бұрын
James M Perhaps I don't have an ear for such things...However, the techniques she's using sound flawlessly executed. Furthermore, her analysis seems quite logical, and further illustrates her experience. she's clearly made her instrument an extension of herself. Her ability to play makes her music look as effortless as breathing. lastly: from a purely aesthetic perspective, the sound cries from her fiddle and tugs at the listener's heartstrings. the sweet haunting melody conjures emotions of sadness and tear-stained smiles simultaneously. In short: This woman very obviously knows what she's talking about, and I'm disappointed that we only get to see her perform for 40 seconds before she begins lecturing.
@herbertwells87577 жыл бұрын
Frank Bangeard: You're completely out of line. Whether or not James M's criticisms are valid or not, they are reasonably expressed, and he tempers them with praise as well. No one posting comments on KZbin is in anyway obliged to post videos as well. Dan Roseberry: There may be something in what you say, but I wonder if the initial demonstration, before the actual instruction begins shouldn't be representative of her full professional technique (within the constraints of the piece, that is). Not Important: Whether it is indeed "flawlessly executed" depends, I suppose, on the aims of the idiom. Is the violin in this idiom supposed to sound like a bagpipe?

You know John Sheahan, fiddle player from the Dubliners and probably the most famous Irish fiddle player in the world was classically trained right???? 😂😂😂😂😂😂. The lady can play man.
