It wasn’t till I saw the research into the company a while ago that I decided to stop buying from them. However, I would never throw away the clothes that I have already purchased because that seems like a waste. Everything in our lives today “causes cancer, contains lead, etc etc” At that rate might as well throw away everything you own. Secondly, saying it's my people is somewhat racially charged when race isn't being brought into this. Lastly, that's comparing a situation that in observing the both of them, they aren't similar in any facit. One situation had Prisoners getting tortured, and demented in the worst ways in our country's standards, and making more out of the problem is that the US President says he wants to shut down the facility but hasn't presented a plan at all. (So make that as you will) Now the other side is one situation with China's blatant disregard for its own citizens who most aren't convicted of a crime worthy of the stuff they go through on a daily basis. The same country where they would keep citizens in their homes and would execute anyone who dared trying to leave the walled in areas. (Even in life-threatening fire type situations) or force them to do the most life draining things to keep their lives. Such as working for a place like Shein. I agree. A lot of people ignore the fact how expensive things are for those in third world countries. A decent top of good quality in my country is like $400. Ordering from America is just worst as $1USD=$7 of my country's currency plus shipping, that in some cases, comes up to double the price of the actual item. I never bought from Shein but I know a lot of friends and family who shop from there though. I obviously don't condone what they are doing, but at the same time people I wish more people understood our situation as well. Shein isn't the only brand that does this either but most major international companies. The root of the issue is not Shein but things such as child labor and environmental exploitation must be addressed wholly.

Ngl I grew up around the start of fast fashion as I’m 34. So I was definitely the generation that looooved getting dropped off at the mall and shopping at places like Forever21 and Zara ect… once I hit mid 20s I realized how unethical and wasteful these companies and lifestyle were. I decided to do a major overhaul, I completely cleaned out my closet and started investing in clothes made by small American companies or buying from very nice vintage shops. Yes, it’s more expensive per piece, however I realized if I only bought 1-2 pieces of really well made clothes instead of 20 pieces from these fast fashion brands, that basically become unwearable after one wash, that I actually saved money in the long run. I do the same for my husband. I invest in real ethical clothes and keep things minimalist. Our clothes are now timeless and so well made I see them even being passed down for multiple generations. It can be done!!! You don’t have to be wealthy, just smart and patient! I loveee all my vintage leather and denim jackets, vintage Levi’s, 100% American made cotton shirts that use natural dyes ect. Honestly, these well made clothes actually get better with age and never loose style. I’ve even incorporated this belief into the rest of our lifestyle. Anything I can’t grow or make myself I buy from locals and family businesses. You’ll realize the more you simplify your life the happier you are in the long run ❤

What idiots in first world countries don't grasp is that by boycotting these companies and trying to shut them down, they are effectively trying to commit large scale murder. If these factories close, the people who depend on them to feed their families will all lose their jobs. If there were better jobs, those people would have taken them to begin with. You will leave people without jobs, without income, and they will all die. It really takes a complete imbecile to think that trying to take away jobs from people who need money desperately enought o put up with sweat shops in the first place, is the solution. I am not saying the work conditions are good- I'm saying let's buy a ton from these companies so they STAY IN BUSINESS so that all of these people have FOOD ON THE TABLE. It beats having no jobs and no income at all like many other countries.
@marvet9573 Жыл бұрын
Kind of a mischaracterization. You're framing it like they're drop shippers. They employ factories specifically for the purpose of product output and cheaper labor and it's pretty standard practice for popular chinese companies to do that along with other things like cut corners or use unsafe cheaper materials, on top of the fact they are the biggest producers of pollution on earth. The problem is Shein, and other chinese business like it, which btw, its not just fast fashion. The chinese government owns child labor mines in africa through direct gov orgs. or affliated gov companies. Are they middle men too?

I think the important point was very much missed. The problem with shein's sweatshops isn't that the work is incredibly difficult. All cultures the entire world over went through an industrialization age in which the very poor worked in incredibly poor conditions. The problem is that these people artificially do not have an alternative. You can't expect that poor people in poor countries will just magically have high paying easy jobs. But when people don't have the legal right to leave the country they're in or work at a job they choose, that's where the real problem lies. So to the people saying "well your clothes are made in a sweat shop too!" I don't care. The problem is not the sweat shop. The problem is the slavery. A voluntary sweat shop is voluntary.

I love how fluent all these influencers were in Chinese, being able to ask these workers all those questions. I am really impressed. And I am totally sure that these workers were able to answer all the questions freely and honest without any fear of losing their jobs or having to pay high fines for saying something the bosses didn't like. And I am totally sure that the workers in place and asked questions were not hand picked by the bosses at all. Everything was by random and the influencers spent a whole working day with the workers, travelled home with them and saw the great homes they could afford on the good wages Shein pay them, and share the fantastic meal the Shein workers can afford to eat every day with their wages. I am sure the influencers travelled home with a bit of envy in their mind and they for sure considered applying for a job in one of Shein's amazing factories. After all, is earning 1 dollar and 20 cents an hour an amazing salary when you consider that you work for so many hours every month. It really adds up to a nice salary then.

Maybe some of you don’t know the cost of living in China, but I keep seeing people say “they only get paid $500! How could they survive on $500!” Let me tell y’all this, 4000rmb per month is not bad, don’t directly convert it to usd because housing price, food, utility in those suburbs and rent is so tiny compared to the states. For instance, I came from Beijing and the average salary for pwc accountant is 10000 rmb per month. They have to compete so hard and they also don’t have overtime pay, and they are expected to work much more than 8h per day, probably even 6 days per week. Here in the states, the average per month for pwc accountant is $5000, so 35000rmb per month, and they have ot. Rent in Beijing is like 4000 rmb ($400) per month, the equivalence of the same room is like $4000 in NYC. So even though Chinese ppl seem to be paid less, we still have the same amount of money to spare per month, plus, food is so cheap. You can’t just say omg Chinese people are so poor they only get paid $600 per month. Please take into account of the housing price and other aspects. I don’t think most ppl really care about the workers they just want to indicate Chinese ppl are dehumanized as a whole, or else people wouldn’t say “omg they are oppressed! They only make $500 per month! “ without doing any currency conversion research.

Not regurgitating anything from a ccp’s perspective, if anyone says I’m siding with ccp, please, I don’t want to start anything. I’m just simply saying please do some research(look up housing price, food prices, amusement park prices, etc) and compare Chinese cost to US cost. Don’t just say something like if the workers fight back and choose to leave, they are not permitted and will be killed by ccp. If netizens really care, also look up big corporates and their salary allocation and distribution in Vietnam and China. Again, not saying workers should just work overtime and not rest at all, in no way I’m saying that, I just feel like whenever a topic surrounds China, people will take it too far😢 Something really personal: my dad used to work in a finance company and he earned 8000 rmb per month in Beijing. He would work overtime and come home really late. It is considered relatively high salary in China, even till this day, but he would be deemed poor and exploited and underpaid in the states. He could switch to 5000rmb jobs but he had my mom and me to feed, so he chose to stay.

@@NeeroxFox yes absolutely, I agree! I mean, the real issue is that if they're getting paid they're often still indentured servants, so they owe money to the company for all kinds of shit and on top of that likely have high tax still. So, maybe they seem to make a "living wage", but they don't really, because there's nothing actually left for them to call a profit at the end of the year. They're stuck working for pittance to barely survive. I mean, it's a life. My ancestors lived like that. But it's not ideal.
@erinnelson434 Жыл бұрын
All of you stating what "the real issue" is here, are not hitting on it. SO MANY people have said that their products from Shein have a horrible smell. Some are so bad they are tossed out immediately. I'm glad you haven't experienced this, but it is up to you to support a company with reported working conditions that are horribly unethical. And you may have items of clothing that could harm your health and even be carcinogenic, just sayin'.

Most of my wardrobe is from Poshmark. I’ve been able to find new with tags items or new without tags or very gently used from good brands with excellent quality at a fraction of the price. Even the shipping is worth it for that.

Greetings from China. I'm currently working in China, Chengdu and have been for the past 5 years. I don't like influencers and never will, BUT that "body positivity" influencer did say one thing that's right; the US doesn't really know what's going on in China...some of the things you guys hear are basically just propaganda. My roommate is Chinese and her parents both work in factories in Southern China, her mother works in a clothing factory that only makes knock-offs from popular brands. The second influencer said that the workers work "normally" and have a basic 9-5 schedule. That's complete bull... They DO NOT work 8 hours a day, they're typical work day starts at 8am and finishes (depending on whether they've finished that day's work) typically around 10pm. Now you might think that's cruel and harsh but that's a typical day for most employees in China; you can be a construction worker or work at a prestigious advertising company, and "over-time" isn't a thing here. For example, Chinese/local teachers in China work from 8am until around 7/8pm in primary and middle school and around 9/10pm in high school. Schooldays are super long here BUT it's normal... You work until you die, that's what's normal. BUT THIS IS THE THING - Chinese people know that their work culture is gruelling and might seem "strange" or "cause for concern by the Western world" but they've always been and always will be extremely hard-working and efficient. Those factory workers get paid 3000 or 4000 yuan according to the video, that's not bad considering the living costs in China are pretty low. Is it super safe and as robotic as these "influencers" make it out to be...no probably not. BUT the employees know exactly what the conditions are and they still choose to work there. Granted some don't have a choice but instead of sitting at home or becoming homeless, they choose to work and earn a living. So before America goes off again, talk to people who work there or have been living and working in China for a few years.

I honestly get it. It’s a nuanced situation and not as black and white as people make it out to be. I do think that the system needs to improve though, speaking as a chinese not living in china.

You can’t imagine how much are these clothes cost(not market price), 15% of SHEIN price, for making a jeans, might be 1-2 dólar cost. And every piece of clothing that you bought “made in China”, has the more or less same labor conditions… if you can’t afford to buy the local made clothing…. It just the same thing buying from SHEIN or Zara or any other brand.

One of the things that bother me is these people buying clothes that are so poorly made they fall apart after a few uses. If they bought something of adequate quality then it will last so long that it'll more than make up the cost compared to the cheap article of clothing. Or they could even buy some fabric and learn to sew. It really doesn't take as much time as people think and you don't have to be perfect at it. There's videos on how to do it, and right on this very platform.

Though I am glad I have never purchased from them, they aren't the only company with these abhorrent practices. I hope you'll do more pieces exposing these companies. Thank you for doing this one.

I am so guilty of owning a lot of shein stuff. I would love to shop more locally but it’s just too expensive. I cannot justify a $32 t shirt 🤷🏼♀️😔 or $97 dress. I just can’t.

After one wash, the reality of that fast fashion takes form. The clothes are paper thin and just photographed really well.

I've never bought from SheIn directly, but I have bought their stuff from second hand stores (assuming I'm saving it from a landfill) and now I'm scared there is lead in it 😮

I’m pretty sure that was the sample room at corporate but the dirty business happens in factories off-site

I am so happy that you are speaking up about this! I hope it gains enough traction

I believe that the “Factory” was a warehouse where all the designing stuff happens, and those employees are higher up and valued more. get paid better, and have less hours. Etc but the people that are actually making multiples of the clothing are in different factories getting paid nothing, and treated like crap

the fact my whole outfit right now is from shein is so upsetting after watching this. I will not be buying anymore from sheen but I will still wear my products I already own from sheen so I don't waste them.

Have y’all been to a thrift store recently? Over half is literal SheIn garbage on the racks. Please people stop throwing your fast fashion at thrift stores.
