well for one thing...he plays a "chromatic" harmonica instead of the more standard "diatonic" kind most peoples ears are used to hearing. & what im referring to here is the type of harmonica that has a little button on the end that enables the entire instrument to shift up in pitch one half step/half a key higher. (like going from the key of C up to C# for example) which means that if stevie is playing a song in C major for instance, if he wants he can push the button at the appropiate time, allowing him to make use of all the sharp/flat notes in the scale. almost as if he was playing a piano or a guitar, etc...as opposed to a regular harmonica where you wouldnt have the option to do that at all. standard 10 hole harmonicas dont have a key change button. on a regular harmonica they just come in the Key of C, D, E or whatever key you decide to buy. on a 10 hole harmonica key of C for example, you can only play the notes that correspond to all the white piano keys in the C scale. that same harmonica will lack the notes for all the black piano keys in the C scale. you dont have the option of pushing the button & adding any extra notes to your scale. which means that stevies harmonica literally has MORE AVAILABLE NOTES than the standard ones do. so theres that...BUT, with all that being said...ive actually owned 3 different harmonicas like stevies, with the key shift button on the end and i almost NEVERR even picked them up. even though i was able to practice my way up to a somewhat-decent skill level as a harmonica player over the years... (meaning, not to toot my own horn, lol but i can basically play the holy hell out of any standard 10 hole harmonica.) i never seemed to have a problem with other musicians recognising that i knew my way around a harmonica either lol. in spite of that though, i never quite could get the hang of playing that other style of harmonica like the one stevie plays. theyre extremely difficult to master. and i know of no one else on earth who can play one as well as stevie does either. as far as im concerne hes a fluke. a freak of nature. def one of a kind. hes a God among men when it comes to his technical musical ability. nobody else even comes close. so idk if that answers your question or not lol. probably not. at least i tried tho, right? lol. peace!✌
