There are certain things I've waited years...YEARS...to buy because I would casually browse for a certain fit, price, or style. I end up appreciating and loving those pieces more for some reason. I just wish I could learn to do this with all of my purchases! It takes practice and I know I'll get there...reminders like this are important! 🥰

Writing down on a sticky note and keeping that with you while you shop could help!

I’m on a thrifting break right now because I got so many “almost perfect” items. I’m still shopping second hand online and working on filling gaps in my closet but with intentionality, instead of buying something just because it’s cute.

Oooh, normally I buy almost everything secondhand and I just don't go to stores a lot that have a lot of things that would tempt me. Recently I had to go to the mall have some work done on my ring and I went in a couple stores. I ended up buying some brand new things. Yes, they were things that I had been looking for and having a hard time finding second hand however, did I really really need them? No, not really. :-) I kind of can't believe I did it. We need to remember that these stores and shopping centers are set up by professionals to entice you into buying things. They know what they're doing!;

I always have 2 lists in my head: a list of things I want a perfect fit for, and a list of things I need that I will buy secondhand even if it's not perfect (because I actually need something to fill that gap as soon as possible).

Another question, if someone offered you the money the item cost or the item , which would you pick? If it’s the item get it, if it’s the money , don’t and if you don’t know , think about it

Thanks for this. After this, I see that I am most definitely a mindless shopper. More so now than ever. There is no way I could ever wait for something to go on sale. I am low income, and the amount of shopping I do is starting to become concerning. It’s no surprise you have now come up on my recommendations.

I use to spend $100 on clothes as a teen when I worked retail as a treat every week. I have probably purged my closet 10 times now and I’m making a staple wardrobe to love the pieces I have now. Stopping the consumerism mindset is difficult but so worth it in the end and I feel lighter mentally. 😌

I am thinking like this now ! the question " will I like it in a year from now " is very valid because there are somethings I buy because I think it would be something I like but after several years of owning it I've found I'm just trying to fit in instead of buying things I love long term and it's sad I've spent so much money trying to look a certain way I think professionals in my field should look instead of what I truly love that fits my , my life style and be my creative self

After living with my former partner for a few years in a very small space, I'm now in my own apartment. I had several pieces of furniture in storage that i was happy to be able to use again, but for everything else I've been trying to use freecycle (trash nothing app), buy nothing app, Craigslist (free or not), Facebook marketplace, and nextdoor, as much as possible. I had been stressing about seeing items (especially on Facebook marketplace) that seemed perfect, but not having the time to go pick them up before others would snatch them up, but I'm gradually learning to chill more about that. I live in a big enough metropolitan area that similar items will be posted by other people again at some point. I just have to be patient, and maybe avoid looking for items until just before I have a day off coming up. It is handy that Facebook kind of learns one's needs and preferred aesthetic based on things one searches for and likes.

Yes! Thank you. I grew up kinda poor and am used to just not buying stuff but I have a hard time putting into words why I don’t impulse buy and how to help others avoid it… my husband kinda struggles with it and I feel like such a downer every time I say “no”

Another possible question: Could I find a similar item, perhaps even of better quality materials, if I take my time looking for it in second hand shops?

One more idea: Imagine seeing both the item you're considering buying and its price in cash sitting on a table. Which would you take?

Did you say bindweed? Get rid of it! It will take over your yard, your neighbor's yard and the forest. It's call bindweed bc it binds up the spinning parts on farming equipment.

90% of what I buy I only pick up if I know I will use it on at least a weekly basis. Or if it’s seasonal for multiple winters or summers. I’m don’t get decorations that I plan on throwing away like if I get a decor item best believe it is now a fixture. Seasonal plastic one time use decorations?? Girl no!!!

Take a pic. Get the barcode and relevant product identification info. Wait. It's probably going to be available somewhere even a year or years later.

If there's an item that I want/need, but isn't time-sensitive, I save those purchases for another shopping trip so that I'll have something to buy next time! Right now, I have my eyes peeled for some curtains and rugs, but I haven't found the perfect ones yet. The hunt is the fun part of shopping.
