This car is probably the greatest mash-up in racing history. The AC chassis, the beautiful and aerodynamically efficient body by Pete Brock, and the magnificent Hi-Po 289- all brought to the world by Carroll Shelby. A real giant killer, and just listen to the thoroughbred snarl of that 289! I'm a lifelong Mopar guy, but I believe if you TRULY love performance cars, you've got to give some love to the beautiful Daytona coupes.

Doesn't sound like a crossplane, are you sure about that?
@Dr_Xyzt5 жыл бұрын
@@chrishamilton2559 That is very much a crossplane V8 sound. That's the glorious sound of double Y headers. The tubes are 270 degrees apart instead of 180 or 4-1. Then it has those extra long collector tubes. This is as distinctively crossplane as money can buy! --Fun fact: 360 degree paired tubes are the only exhaust you can put on a flat plane engine in order to make it growl, without having to bring tubes over from the other side of the engine.
@Loulovesspeed Жыл бұрын
@@chrishamilton2559 - I think you are confusing the two. Most V8 engines by far are cross plane design, or conventional design. Ford first used a flat plane crank in the last of the Mustang GT 350s and Corvette has now picked up the idea. The Daytona Coupe was traditional cross plane design.

Yeah, the Viper wished it had the success this Daytona did! It also wished it sounded this strong, but it never did! The Viper's 512 cu in V10 sounded more like a stressed out V6, where this 289 cu in Ford V8 sounded infinitely more powerful!

I wanna know the exact engine in this car for when I build one in the future
@AndieBlack136 жыл бұрын
Justin Talley The exact engine? Well, an exact version might be hard to find, & frankly not as good as the more modern versions. First off, it's a 289, a four inch bore & a two-point eight-seven inch stroke...further, the blocks of that era had two-bolt mains holding the crankshafts in place. Just a few years after, the stroke was increased to an even three-inch stroke, to make for the 302 displacement, and in 69 the main caps were four-bolt, making for a stronger bottom-end. The eight stack of Webber carbs were a little difficult to tune, a current single plane intake with a suitable sized carb is far easier to implement. New four-bolt main blocks are easy to find now, as is full roller valve-train... Four-bolt main, aftermarket heads, roller valve-train, single-plane intake w/carb, MSD ignition, a suitable cam..(how street-drive-able do you want?, or not?) Many builders can set you up with this combo...& will make more power than the original, & will run just fine on premium pump-gas (not the track-only hi-test race gas of old).
@Loulovesspeed4 жыл бұрын
@@AndieBlack13 You say an eight stack of Weber carbs - it's 4 - 2Bl Webers, or eight barrels total, but just 4 carbs. Yes they were more work to tune right but provided significantly more power than any 4 bl. carb, or even 2 4bl. carbs could - that's why they chose the Webers.
@AndieBlack134 жыл бұрын
@@Loulovesspeed I don't think it provided "significant" more power...but note the distance within the intake plenum from a carb lets say to the intake valve, is considerably longer...a longer distance with carbs vs. the Webers which is a very short distance....a difference in intake charge mass...I'm not sure, but I believe the short intake air mass was for a "better", quicker engine response.
@Loulovesspeed4 жыл бұрын
@@AndieBlack13 - Well I recall Shelby's 289 in the GT 350 R Mustang was about 350 hp max with a single 4 bl. carb. Same basic engine with the 4 Weber setup was 390 hp. It's ironic that you mention the short vs long intake runners, as my 2002 SVT Focus had a dual stage intake manifold (DSI). The air/fuel mixture was run down short intake runners below 6,000 rpm for maximum torque, and above 6,000, it automatically switched to long runners for maximum horsepower. That SVT pocket rocket was more technologically equipped than most people even knew. It also had a dual mass flywheel with half the flywheel connected to the crankshaft and the other half to the clutch. This reduced vibration and wear on the clutch and provided smoother shifts to the transmission. The Tranny was a 6 speed German made Getrag. It had a dual lay shaft design , which meant it had not one output shaft, but rather two, each with a different output ratio. First, second, fifth and sixth gears were connected to one, while third, fourth and reverse were connected to the other. This setup allowed the trans. to act like a close ratio 6 speed, with a good amount of overlap in each gear. It had variable valve timing on the intake valves and a hand made tuned stainless steel exhaust header. The 2 liter 4 cylinder put out 170 hp without turbo or supercharger, and would rev freely to 7,300 rpm. The cylinder head design was by Cosworth. With the 6 spd., the car was good for 135 mph.
