In the 1960s, civil rights victories dealt a blow to racial discrimination, and yet 40 years later many blacks remain left behind. Has affirmative action sabotaged the gains of the civil rights movement? What is the role of personal accountability in improving the standing of minority groups? In his book, "White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era," distinguished race-relations scholar Dr. Shelby Steele argues that the age of white supremacy has given way to an age of white guilt-and neither has been good for African Americans.
Dr. Steele is a long-standing critic of racism and segregation, as well as welfare programs, affirmative action, and black victimization. He has written extensively for the "New York Times," "Wall Street Journal," and "Harper’s," and in 1990, he received the National Book Critics Circle Award for "The Content of Our Character."

My youngest son tells me with some frequency how much he appreciates that I made him speak properly and do his homework. He graduated from a new ivy with a poli-sci degree and works in tech sales. At 27, he is already very successful, but has struggled to find a perspective on racism that doesn’t leave him feeling diminished. Since he decided to reject the oppression narrative, he says he has never felt more free and more empowered and more in control of his life. We both watched this video tonight. I’m looking forward to discussing it with him tomorrow. Thank goodness for Thomas Sowell and Larry Elder and Shelby Steele. Their writings and lectures have helped us so much.

I believe whole heartedly we fighting the war. We have looked at the battle of Martin Luther King's time and before was fight at a time we didn't have culture capital and a firm system to despense financial literacy. The importance of family continuity. Today needs the development schools supported by black monies. There is static that indicated 1 out every 50 Black people in America is a millionaire or multimillionaire. Just imagine if one of each of the families mentioned above had oand would take 10 families over their life time and taught them the parter, discipline and financial literacy they know... what would happen in 5 to l0 decades... a total transformation. Individualism is foundation by mentorship. Because you can't effectively take yourself some place you never been... a guide is needed. Other cultures have done this very successfully not without road blocks or setbacks...but mentoring can bring intellectual, economical, moral, and an experience of leadership via a examples of those whom have done it.

Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, and Shelby Steele amongst others of that group of men are who we should be listening to. Booker T Washington tried to get Blacks to learn to get that dream of freedom they so chase, you can freedom with someone constantly giving you handouts! My father said when you work hard for something and with pure determination and dedication, you learn responsibility and accountability for everything you do and only then are you truly free!! He said that goes for everyman man and woman on this planet regardless of race!! Even Malcolm X said “A race of people is like an individual man; until it uses its own talent, takes pride in its own history, expresses its own culture, affirms its own selfhood, it can never fulfill itself.” That is the truth!

+macaronimick The problem is, he makes sense a lot of the time but then he says very peculiar things. He looks at being black as a curse cause he makes all kinds of assumptions about black or mixed race people based on them being black or mixed race. There is no winning sometimes if you really pay attention to everything he says. And the UK environment does not really make people of colour feel they are British. An American is an American. It's very important to socially license people to fully identify with the country of their birth, very important.

EarlRegent In Britain, patriotism is frowned upon. In America it certainly is not. Also in Britain, we live under the dictatorship of the EU, so we barely make our own laws anyway. Constructing a society that best suits our citizens' needs is difficult in this regard because there are so many laws we are restricted from passing. Also, we lived under state sponsored multiculturalism for a little over a decade, the flood gates were opened, and now we have a country of extremely segregated communities where there is no incentive to live your life according to the values of the host nation. Immigrants are told they can come, but need not change. European nations have all experienced some degree of this regressive cultural marxist philosophy in their political institutions. Britain's only hope is to leave the EU and whip the country back into shape.
@EarlRegent
@EarlRegent 8 жыл бұрын
ReaganRocks I have experienced Europe and even terms like "English" is used to describe white English people. There is a lot of social resistance to identifying as British if you are of a different race and yes, patriotism for white Brits is frowned upon but it not even need be patriotism. Simply having that identity is enough to make a society more cohesive. There is resistance there. Don't confuse multiculturalism with multiethnic. I completely agree that everything from the schools to other institutions need to instil a sense of Britishness in all its citizens, especially immigrants and people who look different as they need it even more than the rest in my opinion. The problem is, like I said before, society itself has to start accepting other types of people as British the same way Americans accept everyone as American. This is terribly important and more productive than BNP type rhetoric. That doesn't help.
@macaronimick
@macaronimick 8 жыл бұрын
EarlRegent I think you misunderstand the politics here. Yes, 'English' does hold ethnic connotations, but in many cases it doesn't. I myself am English by birth, but Irish and Greek by ethnicity. I am nevertheless very proud of my English and British identity. Where the issue comes in is that ethnic Europeans are being replaced by cultures and people from the 3rd world. If it were possible to assimilate all newcomers into England and make them culturally English, I don't think integration would be so much of an issue. But when you have millions of people living within closed communities, being told their cultural values are as equal to the host nations', this is where you get division. Welfare is also another huge issue. Allowing people to arrive and live off the state means they don't participate in the workforce and hence rarely interact with host nation values on a day to day basis. However, British society has gone off track a lot in recent decades. Family structures are being destroyed in the West, and there is wide spread immorality. New comers may well come and see these values are not attractive, which means they cling to their own even more. The reality is, Britain no longer offers them a reasonable alternative culture.

My first talk by Mr. Steele. Finally showed up because so many other intelligent black man that I listen to speak about him with reverence and respect. Casually wandering through some of the commentary, I pause and wonder, if a Martin Luther King Jr were to show up today, would he even have much of a following? If Mr Steele were completely ignored by white audiences, would he still have a following among blacks? Listening to this talk myself, I understand why he is so highly spoken of by others. He speaks with an ease, a command, and true confidence in what he is saying. I can truly believe that he doesn't care a whit about being called an uncle Tom. Personally, I think a lot of white folks listen to black intellectuals speak, who do not openly express hatred and contempt. I'm not surprised that this might be an excellent starting point. Which is why the example of Daryl Davis astonishes me so. And yet his creed has such a simple and direct honor to it. So I'll end with this. When I was a kid, I would have been overjoyed to get my hands on a Get Out Of School Free card. I'm glad now that no-one ever gave me one. I find it strange....that a successful and accomplished man would not be looked up to as an inspiration, a motivator, and an exemplary model of achievement - instead of someone who inspires shame, ridicule and betrayal? There are several tens of thousand of different choices in life to attain even a modest success. Narrowing that down to a half dozen seriously increases the odds against. And what exactly is that handout from The Man? Blood money? Hush money? Or worst of all, and by far - Stay in your place and don't bother us money? Brothers and sisters should be doing it for themselves. (which after all, was this man's message).

Your words are also soaked in bitterness and victim mentality...you point to the ‘badness’ of white people rather than the ‘goodness’ of white people who stood and still stand with black people against evil and injustice...you focus on the hatred and division but speak nothing to resilience and brotherhood and honourable sacrifice on all sides...you contribute essentially nothing to racial harmony and progress which benefits ALL. There’s no pretence necessary to recognise and confront or challenge stinking thinkin’ (out of the abundance of the heart) when it’s all there in black and white. BE the change you want to see in the world...you have the freedom to make that choice.

Black Royalty MGMT There’s been no switching the narrative, no pretending to know you and no working hard to paint any picture of you on my part. I don’t need to know anything of your day to day life...and ignorance has nothing to do with it. Your words suffice...and they reveal bitterness and racism and hatred and your own skewed version of the past and how it relates to and has impacted the present. For the record I don’t seek credibility...I don’t need it...as I said before, your words speak for themselves...interpreting what you’ve said doesn’t depend on my reliability or trustworthiness. As for “everything” you’ve stated being based off of history and not emotions?…yeah, no...your posts are soaked in emotional rhetoric...in fact you contradict yourself by essentially acknowledging that you “sound bitter”...but blame your bitterness on what you perceive as bitter history. Has there been injustice and cruelty and inhumanity in the past?…yes, the world over. Has there been brotherhood, sacrifice, reconciliation and honour...yes, also the world over. As for demanding I “get over it”?…no, I don’t need to get over anything...I’m merely reflecting on your posts and urging you to let go of hatred and bitterness and your caustically embellished perspective of current race relations in the US. You say you only hate those who hate you...so you think harbouring hatred in your own heart is going to do you any good?…it won’t. You can’t successfully fight darkness with darkness. Hatred is a trap...a poisonous hook...and if left to fester it will cause harm and sickness...it can and will eat you up on the inside like a vile cancer. Why do that to yourself? Why let the hatred of others...real or perceived...effectively sentence you to such harm and sickness? My guess is, you’re better than that. I dare you...be the change you want to see in the world.

He made some amazing points. Such a good observation of freedom I haven't been able to put into words. That's why you find all these rich college/ high school and well off kids trying to adopt some kind of cause or oppression. Going through real struggle adds character and meaning to your life. But it also makes you busy and distracted from accountability as an individual. There's a certain level of comfort in chaos even when the chaos is real and truly oppressive. But we need to differentiate between true injustice and self afflicted injustices. It dimishes the real pains that some people go through and blinds us from seeing the real issues we're facing as a society.

Steele has it right: "We worship at the church of racism." That is precisely what we see today. Anti-racism is one aspect of the PC religion. As Mr. Steele observes, those who are free face the awful need to prove oneself. If you are free, why haven't your succeeded? John McWhorter makes a similar point in his video. All minority groups in America have embraced self-reliance and succeeded, in spite of racial bias -- the Jews, Koreans, Vietnamese, Irish, and Italians. Some black Americans have too. But the PC movement allows under-achieving black citizens to excuse themselves from the need to achieve anything by blaming "systemic racism" for their own shortcomings. Protests and the destruction of civic symbols (statues, the flag, etc.) are substitutes for real accomplishment; they camouflage their own inadequacies. It is easier to destroy than to build. Those who are unable or unwilling to perform to the world's standards disparage and undermine those standards to justify their own failure to achieve anything worthwhile. That is why BLM is so insistent on having white Americans acknowledge "white privilege," not because it actually exists, but because it excuses the lack of black accomplishment. If "white privilege" exists, then black accomplishment is impossible -- notwithstanding evidence to the contrary, like Mr. Steele and the other black intellectuals mentioned above. Protest is easy. Achievement is hard.

I've learned so much from this video and am looking forward to reading Shelby Steels' book "White Guilt", which I just purchased a few days ago. Mr Steele answered a question I've wondered about, "How do whites combat 'white guilt' when others (blacks) try to stigmatize us and label us as 'racist', when in fact I/we are not? Knowledge is power and I feel empowered in knowing how to respond to such false accusations if I am ever called a 'racist' when I am not.

Jakob H I recommend reading Please Stop Helping Us” by Jason Riley. It’s a short read, and he REALLY blows holes in the victim narrative that is the #1 impediment to low income Black people rising out of poverty. I also recommend reading some Thomas Sowell, or watching his lectures and interviews on KZbin. He exposes the ineffectiveness of social service programs implemented since the 1960s. I’m glad you’re seeing the light! I’ve enjoyed watching my youngest son embrace conservatism.

It is not in my makeup that I should have anyone in servitude to me. I see everyone the same . I have been oppressed and I have seen some people who believe in their own self importance that they look down on any race , even their own and get joy out of servitude by others to them. It feeds their importance. It is not racism, It is their own self image of superiority and snobbery and comes in any color and race.

Brilliant Book Mr Steele. Here’s my story regarding manipulation of white guilt by Blacks. I have a brother who used to Coach Basketball at a prestigious High School in the valley. He would always play the Race Card to get Black players on his team from South Central LA. He would always make the whites and board members of the school feel guilty because the school didn’t have enough diversity. Eventually the Board would succumb to the pressure and guilt Mr Steele writes about in the Book. My brotha just wanted to be more competitive so he needed black players from LA. He just used White guilt to accomplish he’s own selfish ambitions of a CIF Championship. And Yes he voted for Biden after Biden said your not Black if you don’t vote for me. I agree with Freedom in a Capitalist Society not affirmative action. In sports this is why they keep score to determine a winner. Who wins in life if you have systematically re enslaved Black people through the apparatus of welfare, Abortion, illiteracy and Crime. I’ll tell you the Democratic Party who is now allowing illegal immigrants to enter the country. There next in the political shenanigans of the Democratic Party. Wake Up!! White Guilt means Black Power. Hosea 4:6 🌺

I was born in the 50s and was old enough to remember and understand what I Was seeing on the Evening News, the race riots across America, the burning and violence of Watts. The Peace Marchers were anything but peaceful. Of University campuses being taken over by violence, at the prompting of Tenured professors by their students. So much so that classes were impossible to conduct for a long time, diplomas given out even though classes couldn't be attended. Cops becoming "Pigs" and being hunted down, murdered, Army National Guard armories broken into and weapons stolen and used in killing cops, robbing banks to fund the Anti-American activities. Young people walking away from families and family values. The FBI releasing documents captured in a raid on a radiçal hate group that outlined the link between Russia and the Communist Party of America on their multi-step plan to take down and enslave Americans. Their plan called for a parade and celebrations starting with raising the Hammer And Sickle flag of the USSR on July 4th, 1976. Out of 10 steps outlined in their contract on America 9 of the 10 were completed. Everything we see now, We have seen before, except now God has been removed from American life.

Very interesting, I'll probably buy the book. I enjoyed hearing Steele's perspective on the Black Panthers. I think there is something to be said for self empowerment through black unity or perhaps, identity. I once had a job at a Jewish owned ad agency. Almost every single client was a Jewish owned business. The agency itself did not seek Jewish-only people as employees, they sought talent. It was a family owned business, networked with the Jewish community in my town. I don't know how much my limited experience validates this perspective, but I got the impression that this solidarity in business is a big part of their culture. There is no public awareness of it, there's no social justice movement attached to it, but it makes perfect sense to me, a way for a community to take care of its own. Jews were very much excluded from business, certain neighborhoods and clubs, in the mid-20th century, prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This sort of solidarity isn't exclusionary imo, but it can be very valuable in helping to empower a community financially. It does mean personal responsibility, individuals working hard in business, but with support and loyalty from others who share their identity and history.

Excellent...helps me understand what has happened when we went away from slavery....and gave rights to blacks that they had lacked. The stigma discussion is so important...where all whites are called "racist" and no way to prove we are not. It has been weaponized...and Shelby gave a great discussion of how this works.

I have heard about Mr. Steele but never listened to him. I couldn't agree more. In sports we all agree we only want the best players and if they're all black then so be it.Nobody ever even mentions this. Every field of study should be viewed the same. What we have done for decades is relax standards so the "unfortunates" can catch up. And no one values or respects second rate.

35:23 Freedom is very different that what we think it is. It isn't anything, it's just freedom. And like the Israelites we weren't prepared to take the responsibility for it. All the other colonies freed from British, French rule had the same thing. Freed slaves didn't have the aparatus, knowledge, skillset, and history to embrace history. Segregated blacks were janitors and had not learned to be CEOs, much like the Israelites were slaves and hadn't learned to be free.

Very good Shelby, you are a great communicator! Essentially, every policy our government instigated which was born out of guilt, was slated for failure! The word say's we are to find work for our hands, and do such with all our might, Ecclesiastes 9:10, as a man should work for his food, 2 Thessalonians 3:10. As part of our own Declaration of Independence from England, assuring life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, labor is the key ingredient according to Ecclesiastes 8:15, for it is the gift of God. These "unalienable rights" have been given to all humans by their creator, and which governments are created to protect, not constrain or restrict.

I would like to ask Shelby Steele how he would respond to what I have heard many times, especially from black men, that they are being harrassed in stores, get suspicious looks as if people are thinking “is he gonna steal something or rob this store” and how they have been stopped by the police for nothing or minor things. I keep hearing these anecdotes and I never know how to respond.

I took some off duty education programs while serving in Turkey. The question was asked in a Sociology class, what did the blacks want out of this Black Power movement, in the opinion of those black students in the class. A black student responded that we are to give them everything! "Just hand everything over to you?" "YES!" was the forceful, perhaps a bit violent, response.
