"You're not with a 'person of color'; you're with a person." I learned this lesson in about 1968, when my small-town public school hired one of its first black faculty members, to teach 4th grade. My mom was a teacher's aide, and came home and related this story over the dinner table. She had been in the teachers' break room when a white fellow teacher asked the newly hired staffer, "Do you prefer to be called 'black', 'negro', or 'African-American'?" The new 4th grade teacher looked the woman right in the eye and replied, "I prefer to be called Mrs. Humphries." I never forgot that lesson, and I am grateful that in 1968, my mother saw fit to bring it home to my two younger brothers and me.

I never heard it until well into the 1990's. When I was growing up in Atlanta the term that older people used was "colored". By the late 1960's "black" pretty much became the dominant term. From left leaning people, or from right leaning people though? Or people who aren't clearly either? (The tern "liberal" can mean different things. In modern american parlance, it usually equates to "left wing" but it can also mean somewhat who supports classical liberalism, which could be seen as right wing, libertarian, or left wing, depending. Radical left wingers who lean towards communism/socialism often use "liberal" as an insult, i.e., someone who is on the american left but still supports capitalism to some degree, or someone who doesn't fully oppose it, or someone who is a moderate "reformer" as opposed to a radical revolutionary.)

Bill is a classical liiberal. Definition per: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism Woke is explicitly _illiberal_ . Intentionally. It just occurs on what the US regards as the politically "liberal" ("progressive") side of the aisle (in Australia, the Liberal party is actually the conservative/right-leaning party). But liberalism (again, above definition) spans both sides of the aisle. Marxian critique of liberalism (again, definition above) is a core pillar of Critical Theory, including Critical Race Theory. They see liberal ethics, neutral principles of law, freedom of speech, etc, etc, as part of a grand conspiracy to keep minorities in their place. Not a joke. "Critical Race Theory: An Introduction" (Delgado/Stefancic) says this explicitly.

yup, last time i checked doing a few online tests for my place on the political compass, i was center and slightly on the left so im guessing a moderate lib. I dont always agree with the guy but this is definitely something that needs to be addressed. Although im sure a lot of people who on the left arent necessarily too far gone down the progressive path, probably just not as vocal seeing how this whole new self flagellating and racism of low expectation is making it's way on media outlets and even some universities and colleges. Like he said at the end, the focus on race( hell, anything regarding identity really) when around other people is the problem, their character and personality is what matters. Basically the argument that we shouldnt "see" race, or atleast not let thoses things change how we act around others. Next step would be encouraging people to realise that pushin to change with a tribalistic and aggressive actions doesnt work, the best way about it and really that should be a given regarding living together and working together, is an open discussion and possibility to debate to make everyone's actual position clearer and encouraging people to tolerate those that arent mirror copies of themselves. (well, live and let live would be a good start.) All and all, i miss when the term liberal and the western left wasnt being tarnished by radical progressives and what seems to be a fringe but almost encouraged authoritarian left. I watched it in a Bangkok theatre with a thai audience and the overwhelming consensus was that it was a deeply powerful movie that treated its subject (an English family experience of the 2004 tsunami disster), Thailand and Thai culture with respect and reverence. Only when I went online did I see the hate the movie got for showing only the white experience. As if human pain and suffering isnt universal.

@Mr Olonzo Racism is the belief that one race is superior to others and deserving of special privileges. Babies are not racist. What you are describing is *preference*. People tend to prefer their own group. This doesn't mean they believe their group is superior, it means they like being around people similar to them. This is an evolutionary trait that allowed gene groups to propagate themselves better. Preference is not racism.

@Regina Buttons The Republicans started as an anti-slavery party. The KKK was almost exclusively something from the Democrats. So saying "historically neither has done anything to deter racism" isn't accurate. Now, if you want to talk about how each as evolved then that might be a bit more accurate....but in the scope of time the Dems have only turned themselves around recently....like the end of the 1960's. We can point fingers at both parties with specific instances, but your "historically" quip again isn't accurate.

@Regina Buttons Oh, I DO get it, I have a degree in history. But you used the word "historically", which accounts for a LOT of time. You might want to read up on the respective histories of each of the two major political parties.

@tidefanyankee2428 4 жыл бұрын
@Regina Buttons The history of the different political parties are their origins. Some of the principles within each were seen up until not so long ago. Where did I say there isn't any racism today? There are some instances where being racist is illegal, but like it or not, people get to feel/believe as they wish, as stupid as their belief's may be. People make up political parties btw.....and attitudes in each have changed over time. I'm not arguing with you, all I've said is when you use the word "historically" you need to first go back and look at a party's record.

Yes and no. That's a great sentiment, but it's just not enough to not be a racist. I get it. Yes, indeed, if everyone would just stop being racist then racism would disappear. That's true. But that is very unlikely, pragmatically speaking. In reality there will be racists for a very long time. And racism in itself is very complicated. Racism is not just conscious behavior, but also unconscious stereotypes. Not every racist is equally racists - like with everything there are shades. And most racists don't see themselves as racists, but mere "realists" - they usually think they are the good guys and people calling them out for their racism are the evil ones. Therefore racist jokes or whatever might not be the end of the world, they might be innocent and yes, there are often bigger problems, but it doesn't hurt to at least think about if it is really that important to fight for them or just laugh about something else. And it can't hurt to reflect why we might find such jokes so appealing in the first place and if we truly are completely non-racist. So, just being non-racist is a good start, but if everyone would just ignore race and therefore racism, then we would ignore solvable problems - and often problems within ourselves. I actually think that that is one of the reasons Trump got elected - people didn't want to reflect and Trump told them what they wanted to hear: You're not the bad guys, everyone else is, you're actually the victim. For the past decades we have tolerated the intolerant. For a very long time people didn't speak out - it was just an opinion and every opinion is valid, to be respected and to be never questioned, seemed to have been the idea since at least the 80s. And that prevented true self-reflection of us as individuals and as a society. The first step in solving a problem is acknowledging that there is one. We've allowed hateful ideas to exist under the guidance of "free speech" - even though countering one free speech with another free speech is not at all limiting free speech, self-censoring to never challenging problematic speech is much more likely to limit speech than using more speech, after all. I'm sure you know these situations on the bus or in any other public space; someone says something horrific and everyone around just stares at their phones. Of course racists are not going to change his or her perspective if they are never confronted - many of them don't know that there even is a problem. So, yes, treat everyone with decency, no matter what individual characteristic one has. But also factor in that these individual elements of someone has an influence on their lives and don't ignore their individuality. And, more importantly, don't just be a non-racist, be an anti-racist and speak out against hate. Your statement is great, but it's oversimplifying an extremely complex issue. And it calls for non-action, which doesn't only not solve problems, it might increase them. So, yes, treat everyone as a human being, not their characteristics, but also recognize that we don't live in a vacuum and we're all molded by the circumstances we were born into - ignoring problems is simply not the solution. Again, not criticizing, I understand you mean well, I'm just adding to your very well intended thought. And Maher is correct in what he is saying, but he is ignoring a big part of the story. It's just not as simple as he makes it out to be - racism is a little bit more complicated than every individual not acting racist. I liked this reaction to the discussion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qavck3ieprqgjKs Have a great life.

@@Scorch428 Hm... If that was true I would agree with you. Wanting to have advantages in society is not good for the rest of society. Egoism will always hurt everyone. And I'm sure that there are some people out of 7.8 billion people on this planet who think like that. I don't know what constitutes "a lot of them", but that seems to be an overstatement. And this phrasing, that includes a hint of 'me vs. them' thinking might be the source for such overestimations. But do you know this to be true with certainty? Or is this just something you think is true, because you think a loss of privileges is the same as a loss of rights? How did you come to that conclusion? Could you give me examples for "a lot of" people in "these groups" wanting "to be BETTER THAN"?

Whitey On The Moon No need to qualify “conservative” with “neo” which is generally a foreign policy issue. Really it’s just the GOP and mainstream US conservatism post 1965. To be honest neocons would use identity politics when it suits them, if it’s a tool they can exploit to fight a war. For example our foreign policy towards Israel relies on white Evangelicals who think we need to have Jews in Jerusalem for Jesus to return. That’s explicit identity politics.

Also,I'd argue it's better for minorities in white western countries than it is for minorities anywhere else. Things are much more equal in the west so that the majority privilege is almost negligible. Get a white guy to go live in a country as a minority. Not a rich guy or a rich tourist, just regular joe white guy, and he'll quickly learn he's at a disadvantage to the majority group. White privilege is bs.

Our boss is a black woman, one of our developers is a black man, and half my remaining coworkers are of east Asian or south Asian descent. We're a very diverse department but have never once brought it up because it's frankly never occurred to us to do so. We don't notice each others' races when we're on calls with each other, or spending hours at a time trying to solve problems together. We like each other, work well together, occasionally argue, but ultimately respect each other and our boss is the biggest reason for that. Racism will only go away once we've spent decades working together, hanging out with each other, marrying each other, and just generally living together. I'm Cherokee, and I know all the words to "Sweet Caroline." I can also play it on Guitar. I hope that isn't considered "cultural appropriation."😳

This "we are all people" mentality is no way to acheive communism, or as the woke crowd calls it - progress.

It's better because Bill delivered a solid rant on this subject. He didn't dance around the subject like we've come to expect from other talking heads. He just slammed down on it and that's what I admire about Bill.

I am not a progressive nor am I a staunch conservative. But how much has changed when Bill Maher continues to make sense. The hope is we all become more empathetic to others and still support security, and economic stability. It should no longer be Conservative but Centrist.
