My wife and I are owner operators and we lease our equipment to a nationwide RV Transport company. If that freight market in which you are currently running gets bad you might want to consider hauling new RVs. You will have to purchase a trailer. We get to pick and choose our loads, get to pick and choose when we load, we get to pick and choose how fast we drive, which roads to drive , where to fuel. We get to pick and choose when we unload. We currently run at 3 dollars a mile. The downside is we have to find our own back haul going back towards Elkhart Indiana. We haul automobiles back east just to cover our fuel expense. Yes you have to load and unload your trailer but that's easy work. Good luck on your endeavors.

Who pays for the R.V.'s when you get into a wreck, and they are beyond repair?
@daviddhulst15132 ай бұрын
We have insurance on our loads. It depends on who was at fault. If it is beyond repair, it is written off just like a vehicle.

A CDL trainer gave us a tip on backing a trailer. "Turn towards your trouble." If your trailer is going left (trouble) and you want to go straight or right, turn the steering wheel to the left. Obviously, the opposite for right heading trailer. I was amazed how many seasoned drivers appreciated that tip.

Since June of last year, things have been rough. I had to volunteer for a deployment with the National Guard to avoid getting laid off at ABF. At this point I am just considering getting out of trucking and going law enforcement, trucking is just too chaotic and unreliable for me to trust to support my family. Anyways, glad to see you are doing well. Sometimes rolling solo is just the way to go! Stay safe out there!

I'm grateful you are in a better place mentally and physically right now, and as others have mentioned, looking happy and heathy after all the stress of the last short handful of years. I'd love to hear more about how you operate as a owner/operator in the industry and the good/bad/ugly of the options you have to pick from when you are hiring/leasing out your services. I think giving drivers all the nice things they want is a good concept however I also think that's what made a lot of companies go under. I totally get it. I drove for Swift for about 2 years then I went into the office as a Driver Leader at Swift. I have had to hire and manage a bunch of drivers, and unfortunately fire a few. I get how rough it is to have to fire drivers. It is absolutely awful. I recently decided that I’d rather be on the road than in the office, and I’m getting ready to jump back in at Swift. Running a small fleet (or being part of a team that runs a large fleet) is not easy, and I’m amazed that you have done as well as you have. Keep it up!

Now you are being regenerated within. You are intelligent, hard worker & attached or attaching to the pulse of your emotions. Im excited to see the next chapter. If you are ever led to have emoloyees again, do more vetting of drivers, make sure your boundaries are set within & go slow in driver growth to make sure your internal boundaries stick/hold position. Patience. Patience. Patience. Its a growing process. Love traveling with you via youtube.

Every experience, especially as a younger person, is a learning experience whether it goes as desired or takes a turn. Learn from it, learn about yourself in the situation, and keep moving forward. Good for you in the Bight Mountain experience. Second, dealing with people who work with and for you can be the most difficult part of company ownership. Unfortunately not everyone cares about success, responsible behavior and being accountable for their behaviors as one would expect and hope for these days. Setting expectation and then holding them to those can be challenging but is an absolute must to be successful. Keep on learning and try to enjoy the journey, you will do well despite the hills and valleys that come your way.
