Fixing A Trailer Air Leak + Trucking Winter Tips 2022

I have always wanted to stop on this exit in New Mexico. It often times takes me several passes to plan an explorative excursion. Today was the day for that excursion. I also left a little treasure for someone else to find! If they ever stop in the same spot I did. I hope it brings someone else joy as it did me.
I also fixed my own air leak on this trip. Always an adventure. I also give the top 4 things to think about going into this winter season 2022.

That roadside shrine is known as a “descanso” here in the Southwest. It seems to be connected to a Rachel who tragically died at that location on 8/5/19. I’ll bet that that descanso was created by a Hispanic Catholic family who tragically lost a loved one in a traffic accident of some sort at or near that location as all of those artifacts are the sorts of things that you’d find at a prayer vigil site for a deceased loved one. I don’t know the backstory behind that particular descanso, but it’s got to be a story of sadness, tragedy, grief, prayer, and hope. There are thousands of descansos across the Southwest, and there are quite a few along the I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson. The prayer candles signify the intercession of the Blessed Mother and various Catholic saints for the soul of Rachel following what almost certainly would have been her tragic and heartbreaking death and loss.

Hey Shelby hope you’re well. I was watching one of your videos yesterday and you were saying you occasionally have trouble with the DEF pumps starting and stopping. I also had this issue and was able to resolve it by holding the nozzle at a 3-4 o’clock position. Has worked 💯 of the time since I started doing it that way. Hopefully this helps take care

Yeah, if you don't already have one and your batteries can kick out enough juice to run one, I would highly suggest getting a coffee maker so you can make coffee yourself without having to venture outside your truck and risk nearly freezing your butt off trying to walk to a Starbucks or other coffee shops in the area. Hopefully your truck is also new enough to have a dash-mounted fifth wheel release button to release the locking jaws and unhook from a trailer without having to again nearly freeze your butt off outside the truck trying to pull a manual release handle.

Great video. Love Dakota, she's so cool. Vicegrips pliars, large / medium size. Sometimes wrenches slip, but they won't. Can use to tighten, crush things (pecans, etc) and hold things in place. #2 Phillips & a good straight screwdriver. Roll of fencing wire. Hold parts together like that faulty dangling handle and the Vicegrips tighten it.

I enjoy your videos a lot Shelby another thing you might want to have in your truck in the winter is candles incase you are stranded and can't keep the truck running you can close the flap to the bunk light the candle and it will give off heat, you would be surprised how much heat the candle actually gives off just be careful were you place them so you don't start a fire.

For winter, make up a loggers bindle. Get a waxed 8x8 canvas tarp, and 1-3 6x6 fleece squares lay the fleece into the canvas & lie diagonally (toes to points). Fold over the toe then left over right you'll be good to -20C.

Wnen I came out. A snap on tool truck was parked next to me. I still have that 9/16 wrench 30 years later. Keep on trucking!!!

That is great you were able to get the air leak fixed yourself. And good to see you eating healthy. I eat pretty healthy and have gone full vegan and am taking a 90 day online cooking school through Forks Over Knives. FYI found some non dairy subs such as block cheese by daiya and plant based butter by Miyoko's. Also Forager Cashewmilk yougurt. I have tried others but I am pretty happy with these. Most you will have to find a health food store, but regular stores a getting better about stocking plant based items. Looking forward to more videos!

Clothing advice! Get Undergear brand "Cold Gear!" Use Base 1 for general use, use base two when you'll be outside regularly! Do not wear cotton! The cotton will freeze you! Socks, go to Thorlo socks! Tools, get a roll up padded mechanic's mat! Get a small toolbox and a few magnetic dish/pan to keep from losing small parts.

Shelby (and furry missy Dakota ofcourse) .... I'm a European international trucker and I have a list I always carry in the truck & trailer toolboxes. * Boxes (minimum 4) of Catlit and empty durable foodbowl, for when you spring a fluid leak. Here if you don't collect/contain it you commit a very expensive environmental crime, so fill the bowls 3/4 with catlit and it holds a lot, with a big leak I use 1-2 full boxes to make a dam around it and it absorbs it that way. * Ofcourse various tools for quick small repairs, including various sizes of bolts&nuts/O-rings/tie wraps/gloves/cover alls/coolant/oils/etcetera. * And for wintery conditions (also during Summer in northern Scandinavia) a few bags of street salt .... my snowchains are in boxes behind the wheels and the mandatory spare one(s) are under the bed (our trucks are more compact cabovers with loads of horsepower). All connecting cables and air lines from truck to trailer I also carry a spare of each. * Clothes, food and water for 4 weeks in Summertime and 8 weeks in wintertime (because sometimes you can get caught in road closures due to the weather.) To prevent 'gelling' of the diesel I fill up with 5% Gasoline (here all cars drive on 95 or 98 Octane fuel) and I have factory fitted heated fuel lines. Most of the times I'm on the road for 2-3 weeks at a time.
