I'm about to student teach in a couple of weeks. I think it is funny that in order to pass the edtpa and graduate to become a TEACHER...they don't want to see me teach. I get what they will see is my instruction but imagine if this idea was necessary for other professions....ok bobby...in order to graduate and become a construction worker...we need to see video of your tools putting something together..I don't want to see you per say...just the tools and the final product....oh and before you even graduate and have a job, you have to intern for months, more or less working for free and during that time we are going to charge you hundreds of dollars for this internship that we chose to have you do.

This is dependent on a very limited definition of teaching that means 'telling'. I would define 'teaching' as providing the conditions in which students will learn. That is what edTPA wants to see!

Thank you so much for this video!! I start my full time student teaching in less than a month and I had no idea what the videos for edTPA required. I have been spending the past hour or so watching your videos and I feel more prepared and more confident than before. I was so nervous to begin edTPA, and now I have so many ideas! I am excited to look back on these edTPA videos and use them as a support when actually completing my edTPA, as we are not allowed to receive help from teachers or peers!

These are such great resources, I think it is important to keep in mind that edTPA is different for different subjects. For example in the early childhood edTPA with prek a lot of what you're discussing is unavoidable. Whole group instruction is teaching, not letting them work on something quietly.

Your videos have saved me!!! I am sooooo glad I found you. I will be telling everyone in my seminar class about your videos. Did you have to do a Task 4? I am doing Elementary Education edTPA and we have to do a literacy video and commentary as well as math. Would you suggest the activities to film to be of students interacting with a higher order thinking activity while I am scaffolding and asking questions? Also,for the assessment and commentary for assessment would you suggest the standard pencil/paper assessment or a performance assessment with rubric?
@edTPAtheeasyway

Hi Caron!! So glad these videos have helped! I did not have to do Task 4 and I can’t quite figure out who does have to do it ! Lol I’ve helped people in elementary literacy who only have 3 tasks - but it sounds like you are on the right track! What you suggested for your video sounds perfect! And for the assessment , I’d say a more standard assessment probably but with varied question types - some multiple choice, some fill in the blank and some free response. And if you can still create a grading rubrics of sorts to go with that assessment that will help you give more specific feedback to your focus students (which if you saw in the How to Get a High Score Video is one of the ways I think is easiest to score a 5!)

@edTPAtheeasyway

Yes! As long as that aligns with the goal of your lesson (so just write the lesson plans that way haha ) think of ways you can provide “supports” to students to be able to participate in the Socratic seminar (and include that in your plans) like sentence starters or vocab sheets with definition of terms that will be used - posters or maps posted for reference etc

Hi Shelby, so all the clip evidence should be included in a specific activity? and should be like scripted? I have been asking myself how I'm going to include all of this things in a video of 15 minutes! Did you included all of that stuff in one long video or two short videos?
@edTPAtheeasyway
@edTPAtheeasyway 7 жыл бұрын
Hi ammi! Yes in order to get credit on Task 2, you have to show all the evidence in your clips . I knew I was doing these things in my classroom already, but the scorer just can’t take our word for it. They have to see evidence to give a score . So yes at times I did feel scripted but I just left myself notes on the corner of desks around the room to kind of remind myself while I was filming! Haha also I had one long video but that just happened to work for me- when I was done filming I watched my video over and over and made notes at every point in time that I saw a piece of evidence . Then I decided where I had the most concentrated evidence and made my cuts there :)

Thank you so much for your helpful videos! I'm not under the advisement of a university program since I'm completing this after moving to a state that requires the edTPA for licensure. I am unclear from the Literacy Specialist edTPA handbook, rubrics, and various postings online from people, if it is important to include a brief clip of me modeling the strategy and make the other clip student-centered in which they are engaging in collaborative conversations with feedback as they practice the essential literacy strategy. I'm curious what your thoughts are on making both clips student-centered vs. needing a clip in which I model. Thank you so much!
@edTPAtheeasyway
@edTPAtheeasyway 6 жыл бұрын
Hi! I’m not familiar with your exact handbook, but across the board with edTPA in my experience, it’s all about being student centered. That doesn’t mean you won’t be seen in the videos, but the bulk of what is shown will be your students participating in learning activities you have designed to help them better comprehend and engage with the content . To make sure , I’d check your Task 2 commentary questions- every question you answer in Task 2 commentary must be able to be referenced in the videos you submit. If you feel you would need to talk about modeling to answer the questions (to provide evidence ) then yes include a brief clip of you modeling with the majority of student interaction. But if it doesn’t apply to those questions, you will still have the opportunity to talk about how you designed your instruction (task 1 commentary ) to help your students and how you chose to model. Hope that helps!

Can you do some thing on lesson planning from start to finish...Please it is my Achille's heel.
@edTPAtheeasyway
@edTPAtheeasyway 6 жыл бұрын
My best suggestion for lesson planning start to finish is to first know what your commentaries are going to ask you to write about - if you really look at all of your tasks ( not just task 1) - you’ll know what you’ll have to answer for all throughout the process so you can basically design your lesson plans “backwards”. Also for edTPA, keep in mind it’s just over a 3-5 day learning cycle, so you won’t be giving a “unit test”. The assessment you give will most likely be on just one standard or part of one standard , so that won’t make it as overwhelming :)

Hi gabrielle! Some rubrics are different than others. Mine said I could have no more than 2 clips, not more than 20 min. So I could have one place in my video that the footage stopped and went to another time of the class. I chose to do a short intro section- about 5 min, then have the last 15 min be straight uninterrupted class time. What content and grade level are you?

I will be working as an AIS student teacher so my class sizes will be extremely small and non-traditional. do you have any tips on how to video this and make sure I meet all of the expectations even though it is not a traditional teaching environment? Or will simply explaining that I am in an AIS classroom in the commentary be sufficient explanation as to why I have such small groups of children etc?
@edTPAtheeasyway
@edTPAtheeasyway 7 жыл бұрын
So your “Context for Learning” document will be where you describe all the demographics and special things about the class you are teaching in. To my knowledge, as long as you are not featuring one-on-one tutoring in your videos, you will be ok. But since you said you were elementary, and I was middle grades, I’d still check your handbook to make sure :) but as long as you describe your class type and list out all the special considerations, the scorer will know what they are viewing. I would still look for ways to incorporate discussion and interaction among the students in the small groups to be able to feature the “student centered engagement” they are looking for! :)

Thank you for the amazing video! I am just curious though, with the edTPA literacy..how do you use language support in a lesson? I was thinking about having my 1st grade students look at the word wall where we have all of our snap words and have them see if they recognize a few? I don't know, this whole edTPA is seriously stressing me out. It's currently 11:31 pm and I am ready to pull out all of my hair!
@edTPAtheeasyway

yes! have them look at the word wall, or a word bank, or a freyer model , or give them a word bank to help them use the new language you want them to use...give them sentence starters, etc. anything that will help them achieve the language demand/function you have for the lesson

I don't know if it's just me, or if the edTPA is harder than the CalTPA. I'm doing the CalTPA atm, and while in order to pass we must demonstrate that we design instruction with student interaction in mind, the rubrics don't spell out such a specific level of student-centered learning. In other words, evaluators want to see student engagement in the video, but the means by which this happens seems pretty open-ended. Does anyone else who is taking the CalTPA feel the same way?

I called pearson to clarifying their handbook instructions regarding video time which states "No more than 20 minutes total running time for both video clips, but no less than 3". Do you know if that means each clip has to be a minimum of 3 minutes? My first video is 18:37 and my next clip is 1:50 seconds. When I called Edtpa they told me they could not explain that to me (which I find totally crazy). I am hoping you can answer my question!! I interacted with my students and helped facilitate conversation by asking guiding questions, giving them fill in the blank sentence starters to help get dialogue started, and structuring my lesson around the students talking with each other about what they learned and how they knew they had the right answer. just dont film yourself lecturing - or I would even say don't just film yourself asking questions and having students raise their hands to answer - try to get students talking with each other/ engaged in an activity to engage with the content themselves :)

Oh wow that’s interesting! What content are you? I’d check your handbook for context for learning especially - mine said I specifically could not record “tutoring” or one on one interactions with students for task 2. From what I know about Montessori it’s very “do what you want when you’re ready” so maybe you’d just have to show yourself facilitating that and ask the kids to discuss things before they had the different options of what you gave them to do? Or just ask them for a day to work more in groups than independently so you could get your video lol keep me updated!

Yeah i think it's outrageous because throughout my education in college they prepare you to teach in public education and use common core standards etc and now they want to throw me in a unfamiliar environment. I never really heard much about montessori, hopefully I don't actually get placed there

Do you think it's hard to get a 37?
@edTPAtheeasyway
@edTPAtheeasyway 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s hard to wing it, submit and hope for the best and get a 37. 🙈 but if you plan ahead and know your handbook and read your commentary prompts before you get started (so you know what questions you’ll be held accountable to) then getting a 37 is definitely achievable!

Although I am not a teacher yet, is it ok to still make a video in an empty room and introduce my lesson plan?
@shelbylandrumCC

Tara X Smiles hi Tara! The videos you submit for edTPA should be student centered -showing how you crafted a lesson that facilitated students to interact with your content and with each other. So there wouldn’t be a reason to film an intro. You could practice with your equipment etc but your video should actually be less focused on you and more on the students :)
