I used to work in the carpentry trades. Everything from building houses to custom staircases and architectural millwork. You would be surprised at how many people work in those fields that have degrees. They get more satisfaction out of making something where, at the end of the day, they can actually see the results of their labor. In talking with these people I found that a lot of them had been somewhat forced by their parents to go to college to get a degree, when that was not what they really wanted to do.

WHEN I SAW THIS IT REMINDED ME OF SOMETHING - I have a Masters in Computer Science. One time in my life I was out of a job. My friend said to apply for Unemployment. I might as well. I had paid into it forever and had never ever collected it once. I applied and got a letter in the mail that stated I must report to the EDD office so they could help me find a job. I showed up with my updated resume in hand. It showed my education and that I had worked for several Aerospace companies for the last 15 years and it also showed what I was getting paid for each position. I was finally called to speak to a lady. I showed her my resume and she read it and told me to go home and look for work. There was nothing they could do for me. I asked why I was called in. She said, they randomly choose people to come in to help them find a job and maybe create a resume. But, I wasn't the average person that came in the door. That is why this reminded me of that situation.

That's not that uncommon, although it usually happens to older ex employees of high skilled jobs who've been made redundant. There's plenty of people who are in highly skilled, niche, intellectual jobs who when the job eventually closes - if they line up at the unemployment office find that there's nothing for them there because they're just not suitable for any of the labouring or forklift work that's typically what's available since they've only ever done intellectual work, or other such tasks. There's more and more people entering the state of homelessness who don't fit the pattern of the normal homeless person as well.

Now - poverty is affecting those who perhaps simply can't afford their mortgage, or lose their job. It's also typically what happens in domestic violence cases. But as said - the "normal" homeless person used to be someone who'd fallen through the cracks in society not people who were educated, and had lived fairly wealthy economic lives.
