Re the tape tip: I tear off the folded over tab and use that to stick to the end of the tape. Peels off easily and reusable pretty much forever.

I had this happen last night. I blamed the noise on the cat. I got up and looked around, and didn't see anything amiss. Then I was going to get a pan to cook in from under my counter, and found the shelf tilted to the back. Why do they bother with plastic ones? This was in a corner cupboard that goes way back to the side under the other counter in that corner. Large shelf and heavy itself, without the pans etc. Don't know how hard this is going to be to tackle.

Yes, plastic shelf supports surely do not make sense in your type of application.

@@BudsSmartHome I measured the shelf after my comment here. 46X21 inches. And no support in the center.

I got a second hand cabinet that has no shelving in it. The big kind of lower cabinet like 32x24. It hapredriloed holes on both sides. I can use this method to replace the shelf so it’s not a giant cave of a cabinet. More useful. Am I on right track?

Do you have a demo on removing the broken plastic that stays inside the hole? I don't want to re drill holes?
@BudsSmartHome
@BudsSmartHome 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Cindy If you drill in the center of the broken plastic with a drill bit that is slightly smaller, and then stop the drill once the bit enters about a 1/8th an inch, then pull straight out and the broken plastic pin should come out. If not, you have a pilot hole for a small screw. Insert the screw into the broken pin and use a claw hammer or a nail-puller on the screw.

What if the hole is too large for the pin. Do you just use sleeves
@BudsSmartHome
@BudsSmartHome 2 жыл бұрын
You can do that. You can also purchase a larger diameter pin. Or as last resort, you can mix together a combination of wood glue and sawdust and use it to refill the hole. Once the glue is fully set, you can drill a new hole to the correct diameter.

The problem isn't being plastic or brass. The hole gets bigger from movement and the pin falls out.

How do you keep the brass brackets from coming out of the holes ? I watched a video where the guy made a shim out of small toothpick pieces but I literally just had a shelf start to collapse because one pin fell out and the shelf was full of books and treasured collectibles. Luckily I got everything off before the shelf broke anything and collapsed the lower shelves. I have a lot of bookcases in my apartment and just found new brackets on Ebay. The oak ones I got for FREE when someone left them at a storage space (which would have coat me $300 @ 15 years ago ) are holding up fine ) as is one I bought at Hoot Judkins in Redwood City. Somehow we managed to get a 5 shelf oak bookcase into the back of our Prius and drove it here some 70 or so miles away. Fiberboard bookcases are garbage. One of my cats jumped on one one day and the whole bookcase collapsed. I live in Martinez, Ca. 33 miles NE of San Francisco.

George. There are different size shelf pins for various size holes. amzn.to/3jPkzSu If you have a particular hole that is enlarged you can use a small piece of cloth or paper around the peg/pin to make it fit snug or you use glue and toothpicks to fill the hole and re-drill the hole to the proper size.

What size drill bit did you use to enlarge the holes? I'm in the process of modifying an Ikea Billy Bookcase to accept more sturdy metal supports for the glass shelves but the new Billy shelf pin holes are 3 mm instead of the old Billy 5 mm holes. My fear is that I will drill the holes out too large... Thanks!

Your best bet is to buy a drill index card. These are plastic cards with various hole sizes in them. You can insert the shelf bracket peg into the holes on the drill index to determine the exact size. Then just use the same size bit to make your holes.
