Psychoanalysis actually started over 125 years ago, but I don't think Shelley was showing signs of mental illness during the filming of "The Shinning." I think she was always a very lighthearted, and a bit eccentric, and sometimes childlike woman. I don't think her mental condition started until the mid 2000's. I hope she can eventually receive the help she needs...

She was parked right outside my window where I pulled up! I jumped out & we talked for about 10min, I got a picture! From word around, if she's not on her meds shes a little loopy....but not my conversation with her. I told her how I love "Popeye" the movie & she sang a verse!!!! & said how fun it was to make that movie....my cheeks were hurting so much for 2days straight from smiling so much! Exactly! All people ever mention when Shelley comes up is "The Shining". She won the Best Actress award at Cannes in 1977 for "3 Women". She was Robert Altman's prodigy and gave fantastic performances in the Altman films "Brewster McCloud", "Nashville", "Thieves Like Us" and of course the cinematic gem "3 Women". As far as "The Shining", it's overrated and Kubrick's "2001" is a far better film.

I read the Wikipedia on Shelley Duvall bcus I've always loved her films. It says the director of The Shining was VERY hard on her during all the filming, in effort to get the stressed out shock reactions from her to be authentic in the movie. He made her do the baseball scene on the stairs 127 times! 🙈 Shelley was so stressed out during filming that when it was over, she presented the director clumps of her hair that had fallen out from stress. Shelley then said...she learned more about acting on the set of The Shining than any other film. She's described as lovely as a China teacup, all sweet tinkers & smiles. Awwww. Gotta love that. I hope the best for her. ❤

She was 40 years old when this interview took place in 1989. There's another interview on KZbin, dated 1994 from the Marilu Henner show. Shelley sounds and looks very different only five years later, it's uncanny. She probably started to deteriorate before 1994.
