People that live on any of the barrier islands (Outer banks) here in NC know this is nothing that special. It happens all the time. These sands bars are here today gone tomorrow.

If you check an ocean depth map, the water is as shallow as three feet deep as much as nine miles off Cape Hatteras. The Cape simply continues for miles below the surface. An NC DNR article a few years ago stated that the larger currents keep the Cape forming, and if the oceans rose 300 feet, it would still be there, though Pamlico Sound would be much deeper and wider, and the mainland to the west would be hundreds of miles away.

Hello. I am local to that area. This island pops up and disappears all the time. Theres really rough water there and sharks so the LOCALS do not even think it is a good idea to even visit there. There have been many drownings there and during a storm you will see this place disappear. Soooooo if you build homes here enjoy watching them get washed away during a hurricane.

It would be referred to as a barrier island or islet because it’s small. By definition of island no matter the length of time that land is there, it will be an island if water touches on all sides.

We visited California for the first time in Aug of 2017. Half Moon Bay resort for the weekend and up to San Francisco for a week. We were sooo excited about being able to experience the west coast water! Put our swimsuits on, grabbed our towels, kicked our flip flops off, stuck a toe in the water, grabbed our towels and flip flops and ran up to the heated swimming pool and hot tub! 😬🤭😂 My son was braver of course! Ran in full speed and almost lost his breath! 😁 We figured the water temp would be chilly since the highest temperature was around 75-78 that day but geeze the water was freeeezing! Anyways, hope you've visited by now or maybe in the future? I've lived in 👣NC my whole life and the Outer Banks (OBX) is one of my favorite places! Beginning of May and mid to late Aug is the best time to visit if you like less crowded beaches. The waters are very tricky and dangerous due to the currents so make sure you swim with others or where lifeguards are. One more thing! Our trip to California was one of the best I've ever had! Simply beautiful! ✌🏼💙

Late to the party but any locals know that these types of things are dangerous. You have to resist the urge to walk out to them. The currents wrap around the cape and produce nasty rip currents that attract sharks because the currents push food there. If you're going to try and go there, don't walk/swim/wade out to it
@Ghoulsandghoulettes3 жыл бұрын
Is this by Cape Hatteras bc Im going there in May
@TheWayofGrace893 жыл бұрын
Yes I was just there, it’s pretty great, make sure to check out the point, park by the lighthouse and make the long walk down. Worth it to see the cape, if you go right to the point it’s like the sea is everywhere. My favorite OBX spot. Also, try Diamond Shoals Restaurant, great food, chill atmosphere, awesome sushi. Love that area, wanna retire there.

Lion Rose dear, I encourage you to return back again. I just spent all of the first week of May there as my birthday gift to myself. I was all the way down on Hatteras Island the lighthouse, the Ocracoke Is ferry and the world famous fishing point. I once lived there for 7-8 complete years from 1976-1984 and it's grown up really fast so as a local-yocal, I will advise You to visit during the off-season Sept-May where the rentals will be much cheaper and the beaches and highways will not be as congested. Very pretty name for a woman as gorgeous as yourself. Be safe and take care of yourself~!
