Hey guys! Its been a while but I m happy to bring you all this vlog on the beautiful Lunuganga estate. I have a huge love for history and architecture so this property has been a place I’ve been wanting to visit since I was a teenager and I was soo excited to finally be there! I hope you guy love it as much as I did. Should I cover more Historical and Architectural sites like this? 😃

I'm a retired Architect from Australia. Many years ago I met Geoffrey Bawa in Sydney. He was commissioned to design a Hotel to be built in Fiji for a company I worked for. He was a true gentleman and a brilliant Architect. I stayed at Lunuganga in 2016. My partner and I visited as many of his works as we could whilst touring lovely Sri Lanka.

I am Bawa minded in heart and have always loved his work. It is my dream to one day have a property of this nature in Sri Lanka, of course in a a very scaled down version. Frangipani trees, courtyards, rain pattering on the gravels, tropical foliage, all.
@kaushala19883 жыл бұрын
I'm an architect and we have studied many of Bawa's work as students and still we learn something new if we visit them again. The beauty of it, is how his work immerse in to the context and the landscape. Even decaying components and materials, slowly consumed by moss and foliage and being exposed to heavy rains and the scorching sun and dust and insects for ages, have a subtle beauty of its own. The most important thing is that no matter how much people want something alien to the land designed and built somewhere, nothing ages gracefully and stand the test of time like something that relates to the natural context so closely. Thank you for the fantastic video.

Great video! Thanks for sharing! Sri Lanka boasts a unique fusion of minimalist and modern architecture. While Geoffrey Bawa may deserve some credit, this style is prevalent across the island, from Trincomalee to Colombo. I wonder if the historical and collective psyche of Sri Lanka, which at the time of its independence had several key metrics for growth and development, has played a role its unique, and more modern architectural styles adopted across the country - a sort of an elevated South Asian identity with a focus on design. As former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga recently highlighted on the eve of Sri Lanka's 75th anniversary, the nation has struggled to build a unified and inclusive identity. I would argue, might be one of the most significant barriers to the island's economic growth including super charging its tourism industry. Though - coming back to Sri Lankan’s architecture, there is also natural beauty and the architectural charm could significantly boost tourism. The Gulf states have successfully integrated tourism with air travel, strengthening their role as aviation hubs and diversifying its economy further away from oil. While the UAE and others build tourist infrastructure from scratch, Sri Lanka should focus on enhancing its existing offerings for a more resilient and prosperous future and coping UAE to push itself as major aviation hub and integrated tourism directly into its approach.
