To be fair Ryo is a stranger in a small rural village here and he's interrupting their martial arts class. Most of the characters become friendlier throughout the game. At least you can talk to all the NPC's in Shenmue and they have unique responses unlike in 99% of games where most of the NPC's are just decorations that you can't interact with. Well in GTA you can punch them or shoot them, but I really appreciate the fact that in Shenmue the characters have unique responses and personalities. You actually get to know many of the NPC's which makes the world feel more immersive.

@@KenShackler they told Ryo to piss off back in Shenmue 1, in his own home town. And even if they didn't, 98% of the NPC have a needless line that makes Ryo goes "I see..." or "Sorry, but I'm in a hurry" A lot of fans gives me the arguments of "realism" or "immersion", ("how great it is to be able to zoom on object and pick them/open drawers") but to me, it raises 2 questions: - does it gives an additional value to the gameplay? - does it makes the game fun to play? And to me, the answer to both is a hard no. Especially with the god awful voice acting that takes away the impression of immersion in mere seconds. Also, imo, for these kind of games, the gameplay must serves the story, but for Shenmue, it's the other way around. And you add the fact that, compared, to modern games like Yakuza for example, Shenmue's story is dull and uninteresting, having multiple NPC with a daily routine does not save this game at all.

@@Shuyin781 The people who told Ryo to piss off were though guys and Ryo was this annoying schoolboy who asked too many questions. Other than that I'm not gonna argue about taste. For me all these things you mentioned, absolutely make the game more fun and the voice acting doesn't bother me at all. Sometimes it's intentionally goofy. It's an anime inspired game after all. Sometimes it's unintentionally funny. But it doesn't bother me cause I'm having too much fun with the game. Opening drawers and NPC's with daily routines are just a very small part of why the game is immersive. There's also the weather system and the day and night cycle for example. The pacing of the game feels much more realistic because you actually go to bed every evening. So every morning you start your day thinking, how do I want to spend my day today. Maybe I'll work a bit and earn some money, maybe I'll practice some kungfu etc... You start to create your own daily routines. I like the fact that you're actually living in that world. And I love the relaxing atmosphere and the music. But yeah, these are the kind of things that you don't really care about and that's fine. People like different things. I love talking to NPC's and I wish you could do that in every game but unfortunately you can't. In most games including the Yakuza games, most of the NPC's are just decorations. I could write an essay about why I prefer Shenmue over Yakuza, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter. We're grown up people. We know that people enjoy different things.
