One more reason to add on why Shenmue was ahead of its time and why the Japanese dub is the way to go. That line "HAHAHA! ひっかかったね!マヌケなスクールボーイ" is so funny because it's a weird mix of English and Japanese words with a weird mix of English and Japanese phonetics and pronunciation applied! It's been living rent free in my mind since then 🤣

That armbar was beautiful, straight out from a UFC fight, the game had so many moves (surprised by that, combat was amazing in this game) and you pulled them off so well.

Thank you! Shenmue is truly a one of a kind when it comes to this. It does adventure, life simulation, free roaming, worldbuilding, it tells an intriguing story... and also manages to offer an incredibly rich, yet simple combat system. Yeah, it can feel a little clunky and dated on some aspects nowadays, but there's no other game that has the courage to do all these things at once and execute them so well, especially when you consider Shenmue's 1999 release. It's a shame there aren't nearly enough fights throughout the game to truly make the combat system shine. 💔 If you'd like to learn more about Shenmue's combat system, please check my other Shemmue videos. Thanks for watching! 🙇‍♂

@@ChairFace770 Thanks buddy, I appreciate the compliment! I do feel more people would play like this if the game had a true practice mode and at least a couple of tutorials on how the combat system works. There are so many techniques and options to explore, but the game makes zero attempts to teach you any of that, and instead expects you to spend hours replaying FREE battles to figure them all out by yourself, which is probably the reason most people just spam Elbow Assault and call it a day, and I can’t blame them for that.

@@killblom3969 I used to think the same when I played Shenmue for the first time a little more than two years, and I stumbled upon TheKenjitoMaster’s Shenmue videos (he’s awesome, check him out here - kzbin.info ). My fighting skills were absolutely atrocious and he was on a whole other level… I thought I could never ever play even remotely like him, not even in a hundred years. One day I decided to grind the 70 Man Battle in Time Trial mode (the one you unlock after beating the game and creating a “Clear save”), with the hope and goal of getting better at the game, using Kenjito’s Shenmue combo videos as reference and inspiration. I got the basics down after a couple of weeks, but it took me several months of speedrun attempts to reach this level of experience and accuracy. I’ve been toying with the idea of making in-depth Shenmue combat tutorials, but truth is, I haven’t got as much time as I used to, so I don’t know if I will ever be able to sit down and make them. Besides, it’s really difficult to explain how to master all of this stuff, since it’s heavily linked to patterns and specific scenarios. That said though, I can guarantee it’s possible to play like this, but it does take a ridiculous amount of time and passion. You could try and replicate what KenjitoMaster and I do in our videos, starting from what looks easier to perform. It’s admittedly not something super straight-forward and it may lead to multiple fails, but you’re bound to get something out of it and get better as a result. It worked for me! :)

Shenmue 1 is Goat, they should have had more sections where Ryo gets jumped. Specially on Disc 2 between the Travel Agency and running back home where it felt like a grind, and all those times you travel back home through Dobuita from work. This lack of VF system in the 3rd one is what killed the 3rd one for me.
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Shenmue 1 could have used some more FREE battles here and there, especially in Disc 2, which only has like 2 fights if I remember right, but Disc 3 kind of makes up for it with the Mad Angels constantly trying to start a fight with Ryo. I won’t deny I don’t have the desire to replay Shenmue III any time soon due to how poor the combat is. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I still like the game and I’m grateful it’s even a thing, but I was left so disappointed, I can’t bring myself to give it a second chance for now. That doesn't mean I won't be supporting Shenmue 4 when it gets announced!

Something about the combat in shenmue 1 I just love!!! I wish they had battle replay ability for select fights but they only let us do the 70 man battle!!!! Sidenote: I like Ryo’s battle theme when he fights without guizhang!!! 😂😂😂
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 16 күн бұрын
That would have been the cherry on top, but I'm grateful we at least got the 70 Man Battle replay. The battle theme is a very simple piece, it's not particularly long or even that interesting, but something about how it slowly builds up the tension and how it eventually evolves when it switches to Earth and Sea makes it one of the most iconic Shenmue tracks|

Well, these were my best no damage fights edited together... you know, without showing all my other, less than stellar attempts! However, I do feel like I could have never played like this without going through all the learning and practice I did for the 70 Man Battle speedrun. That’s what I always recommend doing whenever people ask me how to get better at the game.

The only real problem with this game; is that there were only a finite and select number of fights and that's it. They should remake this and add the random fight set up of Yakuza Kiwami.
@atothed84
@atothed84 Жыл бұрын
I didn't know there was a cross armbreaker in the game. Fighting was simple but scarse, so practicing wasn't a thing you could really do. If only they let you practice on the populace.
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 Жыл бұрын
That's right. The combat is not "hard" by any means, but the game doesn't explain a thing, nor does it provide any convenient way to practice, and no, sparring with Fuku-san is not helpful because the match is scripted, barely lasts a minute and, worst of all, can only be done once a day, and even becomes inaccessible in Disc 3... If only they included an option to replay FREE battles as many times as you wanted; that alone could have driven many players to learn more about Shenmue's combat system.
@atothed84
@atothed84 Жыл бұрын
@@RichardPayne5 That's the weird thing about the fighting in the game. That guy, I forget his name, but after meeting him and his father, he teaches you that outward roundhouse kick, and I never used it, aside from learning it for the first time. I enjoyed the game, but the lack of fighting kind of frustrated me. It was all quick time events and detective work, basically. And the few times you could fight were fun.
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 Жыл бұрын
@@atothed84 Exactly. They really went the extra mile to make a solid combat system (especially for the time), only to waste its potential by not including enough fights and challenging opponents to let the player truly explore it. At the very least, you can replay the 70 Man Battle whenever you want after beating the game and creating a clear save, allowing you to try out all moves you weren’t able to test during your playthrough.
@atothed84
@atothed84 Жыл бұрын
@@RichardPayne5 It's almost as if the fighting was there just for the 70-man battle. It's the only time I remember really getting into it. It was fun beating up the bullies like in the video, but they went down so easily. Indeed, wasted potential. They did the same thing practically with Metal Gear Solid 2. You're given a sword towards the end of the game, which was cool and using the right analog stick was unique, but it was only there basically for the final boss fight. It didn't even show up in your inventory in a replay. That would've been fun.

As old as this game is; if you knew how to play, it looked both very realistic and amazing to watch. Somehow more realistic than Yakuza fighting. A real work of art.
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 16 күн бұрын
One of Shenmue's main themes are martial arts, so extra attention was put into the lore of the styles, the virtues of martial artists and the journey to becoming a master. This is perfectly conveyed in cutscenes and gameplay too (the Virtua Fighter foundation also helped quite a lot). In Yakuza, martial arts are a thing but, for the most part, they're just a tool in a character's arsenal and the story/philosophy behind it is either unexplored or barely mentioned. Take Akiyama for example: his style is one of the more interesting ones, yet barely anything is known about how he became proficient with it. As a consequence, fighting feels way more arcadey and less believable than in Shenmue. That's not to say one is good and the other is bad, it's just two different approaches to martial arts and fighting in general.
