It’s just okay, serviceable for what it needs to accomplish. It has its small moments of fun here and there when you try and come up with the best ground combo or when you dodge and counter at the perfect time, but other than that, it lacks everything that made the combat system in Shenmue 1 and 2 great fun - no throw moves, no blocking, no counters, no reversals, no unique moves for when you’re not facing the target, no wall properties, no juggle combos, no move training system and therefore no new move forms after enough training, and the list could go on. The only aspect I can think of that’s been improved in Shenmue 3 is the targeting system that makes it easier to deal with multiple opponents (definitely the weakest aspect of the original combat system). Personally, the thing that kills the combat in Shenmue 3 for me is the fact that it undoes everything done in Shenmue 1 and 2 from a “lore” standpoint. You go through Shenmue 1 and 2 and see Ryo learn all kinds of new moves from different people he meets, some of them supposedly allowing him to get the upper hand even against all the odds (and the story makes it a point that Ryo is slowly growing as a martial artist by besting strong fighters such as Master Baihu and Dou Niu), only to undo almost everything in Shenmue 3. Remember the Swallow Flip? The Swallow Dive? The Shadow Blade? The Cross Charge? The Hind Blow? The Machine Gun Fist? They’re all gone. I can understand that from a budget standpoint, but at least mention them in a cutscene or show Ryo use one of those moves to get out of a dire situation. Instead, we're forced to witness Ryo struggling to defeat a bunch of random thugs even Fuku-san could defeat no problem. That was just painful. We don’t even get to see the Predictive Explosion (completely useless in Shenmue 2, maybe it will shine in Shenmue 4?) or the Demon Triangle (an entire cutscene was made for this move in Shenmue 2, only to never be used once!). Now, this is the complete opposite in Shenmue 1 and 2. You can see Ryo slowly improve through the story and you improve alongside him, eventually mastering the use of complex moves you’d have never thought you could have learned to use effectively (e.g. Arm Break Fire, Shadow Blade, Counter Elbow Assault). That’s what elevates the original combat system in my opinion - the connection between gameplay and story, the importance of martial arts and the growth through constant study and practice. At the end of the day, I’m just glad Shenmue 3 exists to be honest, so I try and keep that in mind when thinking about its combat system. In short: it was a necessary mistake, due to project scale and limited budget. If Shenmue 4 comes out (and I’m sure it will), this system needs to be binned in favor of one of a more competent game, be it Virtua Fighter-inspired or taken straight from Virtua Fighter like in the originals.

@@RichardPayne5 That's a long answer!😄 I'm not good as you but i defeat the 70 Mad Angels easily even the 7"ft dude, but my first fight in Shenmue 3, i have to retry at least 10 time, and Yu said it will be easier! Don't like the combo mode and new battle system mode, old one was way better for me with one button for each action... I never finish Shenmue 3 because of the new battle mode and the boring fact you have to restore you life all the time. Shenmue should have been released in 2005 with old graphics and battle mode from 1 & 2. Thx for your reply and sorry for my grammar.

@@michaeltylerstewart Oh, so that's what "DDR" stood for! Haven't played the games at all, so I never would have guessed, thanks! I wonder why this track was hidden in Shenmue Passport of all places. Maybe it was part of some kind of partnership between Shenmue and Dance Dance Revolution (like the one between Shenmue and F355 Challenge), which ended up being discarded?

@@RichardPayne5 The crazy thing is that the aforementioned song (the title is Dance Dance Revolution and the artist is DDR All Stars, but Naoki Maeda is the composer) did not appear in the DDR series until DDR Extreme, which was released on Christmas Day 2002. So this is *quite* the discovery, because it predates the actual song release quite a bit.
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 21 күн бұрын
@@alexberrian1118 Yeah, that's what I thought too at first, but then I looked into this yesterday and found out more. I've learned the version of the song I found in Shenmue Passport actually comes from Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX and it's used for the opening scene. That game came out only in Japan, initially on arcade in early 1999, but later made its way to PS1 in late 1999 and Dreamcast in 2000. DDR 2ndMIX intro [DC]: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKDKkIZ9qsx7Zrs This track was then remixed for Dance Dance Revolution Extreme which, like you said, came out after Shenmue and it's indeed called "DDR All Stars" by Naoki Maeda. So this means the song was taken from either the arcade version, the PS1 version, or a pre-release version of the DC version of DDR 2ndMIX. The file is also in STR format (game audio format), which is definitely odd, since these files are not normally found "in the wild" in Shenmue's data, but are always packed into AFS files (which is basically like 7-Zip and rar). Not only that, but the file is found among the songs that can be played in the Passport Music Player, though none of these songs are in STR, but they're all in SND/DTPK (AM2 audio format), so it definitely feels out of place. Could it be a developer from AM2 just took the file from the game (which was probably already in STR format) and put it in Shenmue Passport for fun, but then forgot to remove it? It's really a mystery why that track ended up in Shenmue! 🤔

Hi, have you watched my Shenmue 1 guard tutorial video? I explain everything in good detail there, and I touch upon how to properly block incoming attacks, be it punches, kicks, or throws. I recommend you give it a watch if you want to learn more about this topic. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJrSmqCgfdqNo8U If you’ve already watched it and still have doubts as to how to go about it, I can try and explain it more in-depth, but a fair warning, my explanation will get long as it's kind of difficult to put this stuff into words. Here goes. The key to successful blocks are 2 elements: 1 - Close distance. The closer you are to the opponent, the more likely you are to block the attack. If you’re too far, Ryo will not go for the blocking stance but will instead opt for the “switch stance” action (also mentioned in the video), which is completely useless and leaves you open. Also, there’s a chance that if you’re too far and Ryo still goes for the blocking stance, that the enemy attack will bypass the blocking stance and hit you, so that’s why close distance is important. Use the Run button to get closer to the opponent you’re fighting against if you feel like you’re too far. 2 - Alignment. This is the key element in both Shenmue 1 and 2. You need to be perfectly aligned towards your opponent for throw moves and blocking to work. However, this is not always automatic, and there are times when Ryo will be slightly misaligned, for example when a new opponent pops up or when you block specific moves or when you dodge specific throws; sometimes it’s easy to tell when Ryo is misaligned, while other times it’s harder and you may think you’re aligned when you’re in fact not. There are 2 ways to “fix” your alignment: [1] Evading. When you evade (in any direction), Ryo will almost always realign towards the target, fixing the alignment if it’s incorrect. Once the evade action is done, you will be guaranteed to block any incoming move, unless it hits you before the evade animation ends. Which direction you should use depends on the situation, but in general, dodging backwards is safer, but makes it harder to block or throw unless you press the Run button to immediately get closer again. Dodging forward is especially good when you go for a throw and the enemy is still recovering from that throw (for example, in the Demon Drop spam strategy). [2] Stepping in any direction. This is a little more risky for reasons I’ll go into later. By pressing an arrow button in any direction, Ryo may realign towards the target (not guaranteed, repeat if it doesn’t work). I usually press UP or either RIGHT or LEFT to immediately realign and do whatever I want to do, be it a block or throw or grab. The reason why this is risky is because, by pressing a directional arrow while fighting, the game registers the input and may screw you when you go for your next move. Say you want to realign towards the opponent by taking a single step forward, but then want to go for a throw move such as Demon Drop, the game may remember you’ve pressed UP and the throw may fail due to what the game sees as an invalid button string. However, the game does not keep the button in memory for long at all, so even just waiting a little bit before inputting the move will make sure the “stepping” technique won’t mess with your gameplay. If you want a visual example, go to my guard tutorial video from 1:16 onwards. If you look carefully when I’m blocking Pedro’s punches for the demonstration, you can see Ryo taking a step towards Pedro almost every time I block. That’s because I’m using the “Stepping technique” to realign and ensure I block the following attack (instead of the easier/safer dodge fix). I didn’t mention it in the video because I can see people getting confused with that, but if you can master it, it’s a pretty good technique. There’s also a 3rd way to fix the alignment. Just get hit by an attack and Ryo will instantly realign towards the opponent (for example, if Pedro or Guizhang use a throw on you, Ryo will realign when standing up). This is not guaranteed to work however, as if Ryo happens to get closer to another enemy while getting hit, he may switch target and screw you! This is something to keep in mind when surrounded. One last thing. Keep in mind there are a few “unblockable” moves in the series. I show a couple of Chai’s moves that are unblockable and the only way to block them is to dodge them, either with the dodge button or by keeping your distance from him. Dodging throw moves is a different beast however. I explain everything in the guard tutorial video, so there’s nothing more I need to add. It’s kind of tough, but you get the hang of it after enough practice. Almost forgot. The reason it’s very easy to block moves against Fuku-san is because the game is scripted to help you block moves and dodge throws! This script is only applied to the Fuku-san sparring sessions, so that’s why there’s some sort of difficulty jump in FREE battles. I think that should be it. Let me know if you need any help.

I won't lie. After spending hundreds and hundreds of hours playing the 70 Man Battle for the fastest time, only to be trolled in the end by Pedro, I thought I'd hate the guy, but he actually grew on me and he's one of my favorite characters, even though he only has like two lines in the game (one of them being the iconic I'LL KILL YOU). I was so looking forward to seeing him pop up in the anime, but alas, he was left out, which is unfortunate. In general, I loved the anime, but the fast pace made it so they had to either cut characters entirely (like Pedro) or massively reduce their roles (the Kowloon street fighters come to mind). Considering Season 2 was cancelled despite the anime doing great, it was a good call to "rush" the story, but still, I would have loved to live in a world where the Shenmue anime had much more episodes and Pedro would feature in at least one of them.

Ever notice hold badly the quality the character model for ryo drops during the 70 man battle??? It’s been fixed in the Xbox & ps4 version
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 Ай бұрын
Yeah, that was very apparent when I played the Dreamcast version for the first time. I actually made a quick comparison a few years ago on Twitter: x.com/Richard_Payne5/status/1317071712316424192 Since then, I've delved into the game files and I still don't understand why they made these models! In the game files, that "low-poly" model is called "BYR_L", while Ryo's "default" model is "YKB_M". For the most part, the game uses "YKB_M", but in the fight against Charlie and his minions and in the 70 Man Battle, the model "BYR_L" is used. Fun fact: Guizhang has also a default model called "KIS_M" and a low poly model used only in the 70 Man Battle story fight called "BKR_L". Now, if you hack the game and force it to load the default models instead of the low poly ones, you'd think something bad would happen, right? Like the game lagging or even freezing. Nope, none of that. It actually plays like normal, but with the addition of the better model being rendered. I then took a step beyond that and hacked the game to use the (second) best model for Ryo in the 70 Man Battle (it uses high poly hand models too), and the game still works perfectly fine. You can see this little hack in action in my 2'32 and 2'25 speedrun videos (played on the Dreamcast version). Initially, I thought these models existed because the game would run out of memory and therefore they were forced to lower the amount of polygons in order to avoid problems, but now, I'm not so sure. They also cease to exist entirely in Shenmue 2 (the game always uses the default model for Ryo, even on Dreamcast), and they didn't exist in the What's Shenmue demo (not even a single mention of BYR), indicating it was a late addition into the final game. The final test would be to do the exact hack I made, but on real hardware, and see if something happens on a real Dreamcast console. Unfortunately, I don't own neither a Dreamcast nor a DC version of Shenmue, but if I ever manage to get my hands on them, I will definitely perform this test!

@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 Ай бұрын
One of Shenmue's main themes are martial arts, so extra attention was put into the lore of the styles, the virtues of martial artists and the journey to becoming a master. This is perfectly conveyed in cutscenes and gameplay too (the Virtua Fighter foundation also helped quite a lot). In Yakuza, martial arts are a thing but, for the most part, they're just a tool in a character's arsenal and the story/philosophy behind it is either unexplored or barely mentioned. Take Akiyama for example: his style is one of the more interesting ones, yet barely anything is known about how he became proficient with it. As a consequence, fighting feels way more arcadey and less believable than in Shenmue. That's not to say one is good and the other is bad, it's just two different approaches to martial arts and fighting in general.

@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 2 ай бұрын
As a rule of thumb, Method #2 does not work at all in the remastered version: this also means all combos that start or continue with a throw, grab, armlock, or reversal (Swallow Flip) will be cut short. If you keep that in mind, it’ll be easy to understand which of the combos I showcase work and which won’t. 👊 For starters, take the combos I use in the “Method #2” segment from 4:48 onwards. If you apply “Method #1” instead of #2, you can still execute those combos even on the remaster, but you will have to switch the throws I use at the start with the “Gut Punch/Corner Drop” technique. For example, take the combo at 5:02: instead of using the grab command followed by the knee strike, wait for the opponent to use a hand move that can be countered with Corner Drop/Gut Punch. Once you’re able to trigger the counter, you can follow up with Twin Blades (untrained) + Shadow Reaper (untrained) + Mud Spider (trained) and it will work on the remaster too! 👍 If you instead take a look at the short combo at 5:22, that one can’t be “converted” to Method #1 because it only works with the Armlock + Feather Fold combination. Let’s apply the same principles to the “Method #3” segment from 7:33 onwards. Let’s take the combo at 7:50: instead of using the grab command followed by the knee strike, just wait for a chance to use Corner Drop/Gut Punch and then execute the Torrent Stormy Hip combo. Assuming you’re near a wall and the wall properties trigger (isn’t 100% guaranteed), it will work fine on the HD remaster too. Let’s now take the following combo at 7:59. Despite using a throw to initiate the combo, you can still use this one in the HD remaster, as I explain in the “Tips and Oddities” section from 12:50 onwards (it’s an exception to the rule basically). One last example - the combo at 9:05. Instead of starting with Arm Break Fire (with one follow-up), just use Corner Drop/ Gut Punch to begin, then continue with the Hold Against Leg + Side Reaper Kick infinite chain. That should give you a general idea. You can also create your own combos by keeping these principles in mind: Gut Punch/Corner Drop or Tiger Storm’s 2nd lunge near a wall to start the combo off. The rest is up to your creativity and whether it connects with the enemy’s hitbox before it becomes invincible. Hope it helps! Let me know how your progress goes! 😁

Thank you, you are my savior.😄 But what do I have to pay attention to in order to unlock all the moves? Is there any way to repeat the 70 man battle in the remastered? For your information I play on PlayStation 4 if there are any differences to the PC remastered version😅
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 Ай бұрын
@@GIANLUCA-JOESTAR These are some good questions. Let's start with the easy ones. 1. Differences between PS4 and PC? Other than the PC version having mod support, there are no differences I can think of. The PC version is obviously better because you can add all sorts of mods to make the experience more enjoyable, but the PS4 version isn’t bad by any means. It’s the one I’ve had my first playthrough on, so I'd say it's a perfectly fine way to play the series! 2. 70 Man Battle is repeatable? Yes, for the most part. The 70 Man Battle unlocks as a standalone “time trial” mode after beating the game and creating a “Clear” save, which will make it appear in the main menu. This version of the fight however is slightly different, lacking Guizhang as a partner and changing the AI and movesets for some of the Mad Angels, making it harder to go through. 3. What to keep in mind to unlock all moves? Fair warning: My answer is very long, but I feel it’s important I give you as much info as possible as there’s a lot of misinformation roaming online and you might get confused. First, you can’t have all moves available in your move list in Shenmue 1, because some of the moves you learn are programmed to replace others in your moveset if they share the same command input. However, it is still a good idea to unlock them all, even if you lose a few old moves along the way, because you will have access to all moves again in Shenmue 2 if you use the “Save transfer” feature when starting a new game in the sequel. In fact, Shenmue 2 added the option to switch between moves in the move list, so if you miss them, there will be no way to go back to Yokosuka and unlock them (other than replaying Shenmue 1 of course…). Second, some moves can only be obtained during specific points in the story, and therefore can be missed if you make too much progress. I will point out the time frames you have to get them, though I may not 100% right on all the info I provide, as I’m going off memory alone. With that out of the way, here’s a list of all unlockable moves in Shenmue 1. --- UNLOCKABLE MOVES IN SHENMUE 1 These moves can be divided in 3 categories. 1.) Moves you can purchase -> The easiest to unlock, as they’re available throughout the whole game. Simply head to Bunkado Antiques in Dobuita and buy them. You might want to save up a decent amount of money and buy them all at once. Once you’ve got them, open the menu and select the scroll icon to open it up. Ryo will read the scroll and it will pop up in the move list. [¥ 500] Rising Flash; [¥ 1000] Mud Spider; [¥ 1000] Crawl Cyclone; [¥ 1000] Twin Swallow Leap; [¥ 2000] Tiger Storm; [¥ 3000] Arm Break Fire. 2.) Moves you can find: The second easiest, as they’re just a few of them and they’re not too difficult to find and unlock. Shadow Reaper: Found on Fuku-san’s desk in his room. Starting from outside Ryo’s room, Fuku-san’s is the one furthest to the right. Twin Blades: Found between Iwao’s room and the altar room. There’s a paper door that opens to a narrow hallway, connecting the two rooms. Check the basket in that hallway and you will find a Hazuki uniform with the move scroll on top of it. Stab Armor: Found in the Dojo’s basement once you have access to it, so from Disc 2/mid game onwards. Since the scroll is in Chinese though, Ryo won’t be able to read it. If you call Master Chen however, Ryo will ask Guizhang for assistance. After the phone call, head to Warehouse #8 to have Guizhang translate the scroll for Ryo, then check it in the menu to finally unlock it. 3.) Moves you can learn: The most annoying to unlock, as they can only be learned in very specific points in the game, making them missable. In addition, some of them will even replace existing moves, which may or may not be a good thing depending on whether you liked the original move or not. Pit Blow | Only triggers in Disc 1/Early game [Replaces Elbow Slam] When: First few days in game. Missable: Yes? (hard to miss) Sometime in Disc 1, but very early in the game, you will witness Fuku-san trying to execute this move in the dojo, only to fail. Ryo will intervene and teach it to Fuku-san, which will also make it available to the player. I suppose it can be missed, but personally, I’ve always got the scene, so I wouldn’t know when it becomes unavailable. Double Blow | Only triggers in Disc 1/Early game [ Replaces Twin Hand Waves] When: After you start looking for Chinese people but before going to Liu Barber and Hair Salon (1st chance); when you start looking for sailors, but before 7pm and before the QTE at Heartbeats Bar (2nd chance); when you’re looking for Charlie, but before going to the Tattoo Parlor (3rd chance? Unsure about this one). Missable: Yes (easy to miss) If you check Suzume Park in one of these 2/3 segments in early game, you will find Yamagishi-san chilling out there, who will teach you this move. The park is located in that small street jutting off from the main road right before you reach You Arcade. Since it’s very easy to miss this move, head to Suzume Park immediately after speaking to Tom about the black car incident. If you advance through the story too much, you may miss out on this move permanently. (hard to miss) Once your shift has ended, so from 5pm onwards, head left from the Alpha Trading Office and a cutscene with Guizhang will start, who will offer you to learn the Swallow Dive. I don’t think you can miss this move, since you’re bound to go through the harbor area a lot and will eventually go there, but it’s technically possible? Not sure. Like for the Swallow Dive, it may be missable, but since you’re bound to go through the harbor map a lot, it would be hard to miss these scenes. Shadow Blade | triggers in Disc 3/late game When: After your second full day of work at the harbor. Missable: Yes? (hard to miss) Head to Warehouse #18 again after 7pm and the homeless man will teach you this extension of the Shadow Step. Cross Charge | triggers in Disc 3/late game When: After your fourth full day of work at the harbor. Missable: Yes? (hard to miss) Head to Warehouse #18 again after 7pm and the homeless man will teach you this move. Swallow Flip | automatically triggers in Disc 3/end of the game. Missable: No Ryo will learn this move as part of the end game section. It can’t be missed no matter what. --- That should be about it... Hopefully I haven't missed anything. Hope it helps! 😅

@@RichardPayne5 I'm really surprised by the detailed answer. But my big problem is that the move Shadow Reaper is trained for some reason. It's different. And I think it also has a different hitbox and for some reason all the other kick moves are trained. And since some opponents have different moves in the time attack, it is really possible to execute the gut punch on most opponents?
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 Ай бұрын
@@GIANLUCA-JOESTAR Shenmue has a RPG-like system where the more you use your moves, the more they “level up”. If you train your moves enough times (by training alone, sparring with Fuku-san, or fighting enemies), they will eventually reach intermediate/moderate level, at which point some of them change to a different form. Once the new form is unlocked, the previous “untrained” version becomes unavailable and there’s no way to restore it. If you want them back, the only way is to restart the game and plan which moves you want to keep at low level, then try and not make use of them during your playthrough as to not unlock their trained form. There are ways to restore these untrained forms on PC and Dreamcast by hacking your save file, but this can’t be done on PS4 unfortunately. Only some of Ryo’s moves change after reaching intermediate level -> Twin Blades; Rising Flash; Big Wheel; Double Blow; Avalanche Lance; Stab Armor; Swallow Dive; Against Cascade; Thunder Kick; Mud Spider; Crawl Cyclone; Brutal Tiger; Dark Moon; Twin Swallow Leap; Shadow Reaper; Cyclone Kick; Tiger Storm. Some of them may still work fine for combos, but others won’t. For example, Shadow Reaper evolves into a more elaborate form which does more damage, but sacrifices speed, becoming too slow for most of the more elaborate combos. That’s why I highlight whether the moves need to be in its untrained or trained form in the video. The Gut Punch counter can be used on almost all enemies you face in the 70 Man Battle, both in the story fight and time trial mode. However, it only works against specific punches and only if you’re very close to the opponent, so some trial and error is required to understand how to make use of it.

Awesome stuff Richard! You're making my Shenmue dreams come true! I too also thought there was a secret Guizhang unlockable mode when I saw LanDC's "What if" video lol. I also remember reading a forum saying there was a two player mode where player 1 can be Ryo and player 2 can be Guizhang, but unfortunately was a hoax. I'm also a huge fan of Double Dragon, so when I played Shenmue for the first time and reached the 70 man battle, I was thinking the FREE Battle system would be amazing for a 3D Double Dragon. Also, is it possible to increase the HP of the enemies in the 70 man battle?

Glad to be of service Kenjito! It’s funny how all of this sparked from your videos in a way. Had I not seen your content back in 2018, I don’t think I’d have got so much into Shenmue, to the point of creating content and taking on the challenge of creating this mod! 🙇‍♂ I looked into modding enemy stats some time ago, but couldn’t exactly locate where the values are located. I even tried using Cheat Engine, hoping I could at least create cheat codes, but I couldn’t even find the address that controls HP values (admittedly, it’s because I’m terrible at using Cheat Engine), so I eventually stopped searching. I’m 99% sure stats can be manipulated, the only problem is locating where the data is stored and how it’s stored. If I can find that out, making changes should be a breeze. So far, I was only able to change character models, movesets, sometimes alter specific moves from a moveset, and voice grunts. For example, I created a test “70 Pedro Battle” hack where everyone is Pedro and it’s pure mayhem! If we can do that, then we can definitely mod enemy stats, including HP!

Sorry for making you worry Karl, and thanks for the compliments! 😁 Truth is, I was mainly working on polishing up this mod (improving on the one I released at the end of 2023), plus making this video took way more time than I anticipated. The Terry segment was a later addition and I spent hours figuring out how to recreate it in game, as I faced all kinds of weird side effects when I tried to swap Chai with Terry. Looking forward to seeing you try it out! It’s a lot of fun, especially if you use my modded moveset. Blocking is a great addition for obvious reasons, but it can’t block a few specific enemy moves for some reason. That’s why I also implemented the “Swallow Escape” evade by pressing B (Dreamcast controller) or Circle (Playstation controller) when you’re not too close to the opponent, which allows you to escape these unblockable moves (such as Pedro’s Drop Kick, Elbow Strike, and Spear attacks).

Shenmue 1 isn't perfect but still a solid game. However having this in the game is a major mistake. Most players are not able to defeat chai but if you were somehow lucky enough to defeat him this would ruin the story in my opinion. Just think about chai is supposed to be the main villain and the final boss and your first fight you where able to beat him? Does that make any sense? The best thing for this scene is even if you lower his health bar the scene still plays out with fukusan saving Ryo. Yu Suzuki give me a fucking break man.
@RichardPayne5
@RichardPayne5 3 ай бұрын
That’s certainly debatable and I respect your opinion. Personally, I enjoyed the twist of being able to beat him, especially because I’m pretty sure 99% of players haven’t managed to beat him first try, myself included, so you kinda just assume he can’t be beaten at the arcade; then you finish the game and learn, either by reading online and by talking to other players, that he can in fact be beaten, and that really incentivizes you to come back to Shenmue 1 and give it a go again. The different cutscene you get if you win the fight, despite having almost zero effects on the plot (if you’re defeated, Fuku-san takes Ryo home and you will start from the next day, otherwise you continue the quest from right after the Chai fight), serves as proof that you’ve improved as a player from your first playthrough, as you and, therefore, Ryo are now skilled enough to be able to stand against the final boss from the beginning. I find that incredibly more exciting than just winning only to see Ryo lose in the cutscene. To give you an example on why that sucks, I’ll mention another game, Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories for the PS1. At the start of the game, you will be forced in a duel against one of the main antagonists and final bosses of the game (Heishin). Winning is almost impossible, but say you manage to scrap a victory with enough luck, the game will just force you to fight him again and again until you lose, and only then the story continues. Now, that’s just terrible.

@RichardPayne5 7 ай бұрын
I’ve already answered your other comment, but on the topic of “spamming throw moves”, only Demon Drop can truly be spammed due to enemies lacking an “escape action” (in Shenmue 1 only). Even with that, spamming the move is not exactly easy. If you time it just a split second too soon or late compared to how I do it, the throw will fail and Chai won’t be affected, leaving you open to his counterattack. I wouldn’t recommend trying to mimic what I do in the video, but instead go for a more pragmatic approach. Read my other comment for some general hints you might want to keep in mind when fighting Chai.

@RichardPayne5 7 ай бұрын
There’s no difference in difficulty between all versions of the game. Chai always acts the same way no matter which version you play, but there’s RNG involved, and so he can either spam his strongest moves multiple times or spam his weakest moves multiple times or a mix of both. Not much you can do if, say, he always uses his jump throw or his somersault kick, but thankfully Ryo has constant health regen, so I’d say that’s still not a huge problem. I can see why you’d think “he’s easier in my video”, but the reason is simple. My video compiles 6 of the best fights I had at that time. For “Best”, I mean I both play well and get lucky with Chai’s behavior. There were dozens of fights I didn’t include where I got hit too many times or did not utilize the moves I wanted to showcase. If you find it hard to successfully hit him, you’re not alone. His behavior and hitbox are a pain to deal with, especially if you’re also having trouble with the combat system. I had another person ask me for some useful general tricks to know against Chai, so I’ll repost my answer here. --- If you’re looking for more general tricks to know when fighting Chai, here’s a bunch of them that come to mind. 1 - Rely on the Guard button. Evading is not easy, while blocking is much more effective and will grant you plenty of opportunities to dish free damage to Chai. You can’t block everything of course (Chai’s throw moves come to mind), but most of his moves can be blocked and punished if you’re ready to strike immediately after blocking. 2 - Use Demon Drop and Darkside Hazuki. These are the only throw moves Chai can’t escape, so if you’re good at throws, you might want to go for them if you see an opening. 3 - Prioritize leg moves. Try not to rely too much on hand moves, since Chai can counter most of them with a counterattack unique to his style (he can’t counter Elbow Assault and Rising Flash). Crawl Cyclone in particular is one move Chai often gets caught off guard from, due to its round hitbox. Other moves I’d recommend: Side Reaper Kick, Hold Against Leg, Mud Spider (though it leaves Ryo open at the end), Brutal Tiger (only if it’s the untrained/beginner form of the move), Katana Mist Slash, Rising Flash. 4 - Use Dark Moon (especially if you had it trained to moderate level). This leg move is one of Ryo’s strongest moves for damage output and also has the unique property of knocking Chai down if it connects. Granted, Chai usually dodges it since it’s kind of a slow move, but it's worth going for it every once in a while. 5 - Drag out armlock to recover health. While situational, there may be times when you’re trying to use a throw on Chai and you will instead armlock him (long story short, the game defaults to the armlock if throw fails and Chai is using a compatible hand move). If that happens, it’s a good practice to "kick around". Using those kicks (the ones Ryo can only use during armlocks) will prolong the armlock's overall duration, allowing you to recover more health. Don’t use them more than twice though, otherwise Ryo will knock down Chai with his Elbow Strike, and you will have less time to recover health.

I can see where you’re coming from, but what you’re saying isn’t 100% correct. In this game, there’s no way to block from behind (there’s no action for it in the code and it wouldn’t make sense either), and Chai is no exception; so if you somehow get behind him and attack before he’s able to dodge, it’s a 100% guaranteed hit (same applies for Ryo). Now as for Chai not blocking my attacks at the start, the reason is pretty simple: if you watch carefully, you’ll see Chai was in the middle of his own attack! In Shenmue (and most fighting games I presume), you can’t attack and block at the same time, so you’re potentially exposing yourself to damage every time you go for a move. In the video, I take advantage of the fact Chai is in the middle of his “2 punches 1 kick” combo and strike him with a well-timed Katana Mist Slash. Immediately after that, he yet again goes for an attack, his Jump throw move to be exact, which I interrupt with Hold Against Leg (remember: he can’t block it because he’s in the middle of his own attack). Obviously, you need skill, knowledge, and luck to pull this off, and timing is key to whether your move lands before Chai’s move connects. When I made this video, I wanted to show off the new “infinite combo” I had discovered, and fought Chai for hours until I got this very lucky attempt, where I’m able to initiate the combo almost immediately. Obviously, in a common scenario Chai wouldn’t give you two openings at the start of the fight, plus nailing that Hold Against Leg after his Jump throw is so incredibly hard I’m not ashamed to admit it was just a fluke. This video is not exactly a guide on how to beat Chai (title is a little clickbait I know…), but rather a showcase on how you can destroy him with the infinite wall combo. If you’re looking for more general tricks to know when fighting Chai, here’s a bunch of them that come to mind. This leg move is one of Ryo’s strongest moves for damage output and also has the unique property of knocking Chai down if it connects. Granted, Chai usually dodges it since it’s kind of a slow move, but thanks to the arcade being tiny and narrow, you can get lucky and hit him anyway, allowing you to go for wall combos and dish out even more damage. 5 - Drag out armlock to recover health. While situational, there may be times when you’re trying to use a throw on Chai and you will instead armlock him (long story short, the game defaults to the armlock if throw fails and Chai is using a compatible hand move). It does adventure, life simulation, free roaming, worldbuilding, it tells an intriguing story... and also manages to offer an incredibly rich, yet simple combat system. Yeah, it can feel a little clunky and dated on some aspects nowadays, but there's no other game that has the courage to do all these things at once and execute them so well, especially when you consider Shenmue's 1999 release. @@ArmBreakFire1234 One other player I wish we knew more about is a Japanese guy called “Kazemaru”. He was on top of most of the official Shenmue Passport leaderboards (the one hosted by SEGA in the early 2000s), boasting a time of 2:56 for the 70 Man Battle, a world record which stood until late 2019! I’d love to learn more about him, find about if he’s still passionate about Shenmue, how he used to play the 70 Man Battle back in the day etc., but could not find a single trace of him online. I don’t know when exactly Karl started playing. Supposedly, he already knew about Shenmue and he probably already had a grasp of the combat system, but it’s clear he practiced really hard to get to this level so quickly. Obviously, he learned most of the speedrun tricks from Kenjito, afterblue, and me, which streamlined the process, but that doesn’t make his efforts any less impressive. When I started in late 2019, afterblue was my only “competition” as Kenjito had already gone MIA some time before, and the route and strategies used to be different and, in general, much slower. It’s only in mid 2020 that I discovered the Wall Glitch trick, which opened the door for massive amounts of time saved, but in return it made it much harder to complete a run, as the Wall Glitch relies mainly on luck to succeed. When the Wall Glitch became a thing, afterblue decided not to use it (he probably deemed it too annoying, can't blame him for that!) and kept playing with the old-school strategies, leaving me as the only true speedrunner. Naturally, without competition, I had no rush to grind the 70 Man Battle record, hence why I took my time achieving faster runs. I'll also add that, despite my best efforts, I was never able to attract more players, something that discouraged me from posting more of my runs, eventually leading me to focus on other stuff. It’s only in late 2023, not even half a year ago, that I learned of Karl, and soon after, he was the new record holder. That single-handedly reignited my passion for the 70 Man Battle and got me back into it, hence my two new records in the span of a couple of months, only for Karl to get the record back! Now, this is fun! With that said, getting these kinds of times is by no means a walk in the park. Perhaps it may look easy, considering most enemies die in one hit and the bosses seem to go down in a couple of blows, but in reality, it’s much more complex than that. I won’t go into detail on why it’s so difficult to achieve these times, otherwise we would be here for a year, but let's just say we make it look easy. You should give it a try one of these days, it's the best way to test how it works.
