I went to Shenzhen last week with my father and the first place we went is a sopping mall and there was this lady who sells watches followed us for like 4 times only when we say 'no' or 'we'll come next time' she would stop but there's a chance of her coming back but after all she did come back and my father said 'yes' since he felt little sorry for her and bought a nice watch for 1/2.5 of the price and he was happy. I don't like the process of haggling. Its a real pain in the but. I find the time wasting and attitude irritating. Having said all that: the dude has a point. He is not "ripping off" anybody. A shop keeper that allows and practices haggling %99.9 of the time knows better than to ever sell below cost. They usually have a "rock bottom" which is: the wholesale price with a modest markup added to account for shop upkeep and wages, which......makes the haggling all the more irritating. There is an "actual" "real" price, and, you have to bicker and banter for ages to strip away fictional shadow prices to get to it.

The suit makes people treat him better, more legit. It can be hard for a foreigner in China because not everyone treats you with respect. It's the equivalent of carrying a clipboard somewhere you don't belong. It keeps people from questioning "what is this foreigner doing?!" Not really an ego thing, just practical
