One way to get feed out of the totes is when it's up high in the back of your truck you poke a hole in the side of the bag and then stick a 4" PVC pipe in the hole and aim the shoot down into smaller containers on the ground - like metal trash cans for example- and then roll them away one by one with a dolly. It ruins the tote but it works.

We call those buckhorn boxes Probox seed boxes or proseed boxes. Usually used for seed (around here) they normally come with an removable extension to make the box bigger. If I’m not mistaken some also have the opening on the bottom on one side rather than in middle.

We feed our pigs and chickens for a fraction of what u would spend. And I mean an absolute fraction of your costs. We feed our pigs and chickens on sweet potatoes. We get seconds ( about half a ton) for $20. We also feed both on sunflowers, all grown at our acerage. Pumpkins grown on our place. Aiming to grow just the enormous pumpkins this season. Should be able to average 100kgs (220 pounds) per pumpkin. Plus we feed our animals any surplus fruit or vegetables. A lot of fruit falls to the ground from our fruit trees .Any waste milk or whey etc from our cows. Plenty of free duckweed .I try to keep our total use of grain to 20kgs( $13) per week between 100 chickens and 3 fairly large pigs. If my large pumpkins are a success this season then my pig numbers will increase to about 20.

@DarrylDuncan I’m really interested in feeding my pigs and poultry this way! I have 2 Mangalitsa weanlings that I’m training to electric then I will put in forest. I really want to feed on the cheap, diverse and natural options, (which is why I clicked on this video) but I don’t find many people doing it. One question I cannot find an answer to is: can you feed whole peaches (with pit) to pigs? Or do I have to take all the pits out first? Also if you have any resource recommendations for feeding pigs the way you are, I would appreciate the info!

@@delimpiador in our area ( Bundaberg region Australia) there’s multiple growers chucking out seconds of sweet potato. Everyone charges about $20 for a large bin. My pigs are free ranging, so sweet potato alone is almost enough with two cups of grain per day. A lot of vegetable , fruit growers have an enormous amount of chuck out produce you can buy real cheap or free.

@chessman483 I will have to start looking around the area and seeing what is available out there from local farmers. Thanks for the insight

Hey Chuck, you had mentioned that you are saving $$ by feeding your broilers hog feed, have you noticed a difference in their development due to the difference in the macro mx especially the protein level between hog feed and broiler feed?

Cut a hole in the middle of a pallet, the bag sits on the pallet and the chute can be opened just as easily as your box.
@fossilridgefarms2314
@fossilridgefarms2314 2 жыл бұрын
Only problem is the bags are not very stable when they sit on a pallet while driving, with the path they have to drive to get to their pigs very likely the bag would topple off the pallet. Securing with straps wouldn’t really work either.

Hi Chuck,I was looking at the price of bulk feed their and found only 2places selling it in the 2000lb tote bag,tractor supply and southern states, tractor supply was charging $1179.99 for 2000lb southern states are charging $884 for same size tote both the same brand,so for the cost of 2 at what TCS are charging for 1you can get 4000lbs .

Creative use of your options. I certainly do not have your experience and knowledge but just perhaps I have an idea that might save you some time and work. Maybe there is a way to winch a 2000-pound bag up on a tripod or rafters so you could slash the top of the big bag enough to fill the buckhorn feeder with the first half of the bag then the second half could be placed into the buckhorn after feeding the pigs so you can be ready for the next feeding. Any chance this idea could work to save you some time? Really, I am not trying to tell you what to do but if this idea could work for you, it may be worth a try.

Hi, we are located a little over an hour from you and haven't been too happy with our processor. Who are you guys using to get the variety of pork offerings? Also, where do you go for feed? We would love to have large totes delivered instead of driving and picking up the small bags every couple weeks.

We use Piedmont Custom Meats in Asheboro as our processor. Our feed comes from Harmon Family Farms. They are a distributor for G&M Milling in Statesville. Where are y’all at?

@@SheratonParkFarms we are in Newton, near Hickory. I actually have on my calendar a reminder to get on the list with Piedmont so this makes me feel better! It looks like you guys get a lot of good variety with sausage, etc. We have been getting our feed from G&M but it's an hour round trip and we don't have a a way to transport and unload the totes ourselves since they weigh so much. I've never heard of anyone being a distributor for them so we will have to look into that. Thanks so much for the quick response! We love watching your channel!

Chuck, I have been buying feed in supersacks for a few months, I had the mill develop a mix that I could use to feed pigs, cattle and sheep. I have finished feeding out my steer for this year, and am no longer feeding the sheep as they have plenty of grass. I was wondering if you would mind sharing the ingredients of your mix.

Watching your channel I’m getting a lot of recommended videos that are pretty political. Other farming channels don’t have those same recommendations. I’m not sure if that’s because of things that you watch or your other viewers (or the unknowable magical workings of KZbin) but it’s liable to turn people off.
