Training Pigs to Electric - 3 TIPS To Successfully Fencing Pigs with Electric
Today we are moving our feeder, breeder and boar groups out of the training pen where they have been learning to respect the electric fence. They are all going out on pasture where they will be able to root and forage like pigs should.
Teaching pigs to respect the electric fence is simple if you set them up to learn about the fence and turn away from it as opposed to go through it.

I can’t wait until I’m far enough in my homesteading journey that I feel comfortable in my ability to raise a feeder pig. I have a personal challenge, once I fill our freezer with rabbits and chickens I’ll have earned a pig to raise. Until then, I’m watching all I can while folding clothes. Keep it up! I need all the knowledge and motivation I can get.

My dad bought some young feeders and had run his hot wire around our roasting ear patch both sweet and field corn the lower hot wire was at 6 to 8 inches he also put a young calf in but the pigs being miniature bull dozers began rooting and pushed up dirt and grounded the fence out and they got out...the roasting ear patch was always done this way. We ate sweet and field corn at home after it got hard in late July or August my granddad and my dad turned feeder pigs into the patches and let them hog off the remaining corn...

I have a training pen set similar , chain link outside and electric inside . When the go out in the big pasture it will have page wire perimeter with electric divided paddocks inside , kind of Joel Salatin style . My first year raising hogs , I have learned a great deal from your channel . Thanks 😎👍

Love your videos and your pigs and your work ethic! Just want to draw your attention to the exposed rebar as an impaling hazard. The OSHA compliant rebar caps are very expensive, but there are alternatives you can use like empty water bottles, and also some on Amazon that are like 50 pieces for like 8 bucks... or maybe you can come up with your own hazard mitigation method. Anyway -- be safe, and may you or anyone else never impale themselves. Sincerely, an ex safety guy that cringes every time he see's exposed rebar. :)

We have and used to run 2 strands. Found there is no real need. 1 works and it saves time and labor. Been using single strand for about 6 months now. Thanks for watching

Why do you move the pigs? And do you move any of the other animals the same way you would the pigs or is it different ? Or do you move any of the other animals at all? How much does a meat pig cost? And how much does a breeding boar cost ? And how much does a breeding sow cost like as a piglet? How many pigs are easy to care for with just 2-3 people? Could you make a well off living on just pigs alone ? Sorry for the boat load of questions. I’m thinking about doing the same with my family soon and I want to know as much as I can before we get into it and not know anything

We move the pigs to distribute the manure and also to allow the areas they are on time to rest and regenerate. We move all of our animals on a regular schedule. Meat chickens move daily, sheep move a couple of times per week. Piglets cost between $90-$125 (boars and gilts are usually the same price). My wife and I care for about 35 pigs right now and yes, you can make a living off of pigs if done correctly. Thanks for watching.

Yes. We will reseed this prior to them moving off of everything. This area was cut with a forestry mulcher about 2 years ago and we are not getting some good growth.

Training pen construction question -- I know hog panels and cattle panels are built differently. At what size/weight would you consider using ONLY cattle panels for the training pen fence? I ask because cattle panels are cheaper, and easier to re-purpose than hog panels, but I know the larger holes might make it easier for them to slip through.

Probably the cattle pannels would work because the electric is going to give them such a jolt they can't "hit the hole" in order to get through. You may be able to take some scrap lumber and put it along the bottom of the panels to add some extra protection. If you try it, let me know how it works. I think it would be fine. @@SheratonParkFarms yeah, my one small concern is that the cattle panel checks are big enough for the pigs to stick their noses through, and potentially pry up out of the ground. But that would require a bunch of other failures in the system to get to that point.

Good point. If the wire is hot they shouldn’t get too close to the panel. And if they are bigger pigs, you may want to use t-posts with clips to keep the panel from sliding up and down.

When the pigs root around what exactly are they looking for or doing? They seem to year up a lot of land. Also you say there is 7700 volts is that correct? That seems like a lot.

They are looking for grubs, roots and other forages. The idea is for them to disturb the surface and aerate the soil. We get some very nice grasses growing back after pigs have been on an area. Yes, 7700 is correct. It is a lot but we want to get their attention.

How many sows are you looking to have in production? Looks like you are ramping up fairly heavy is that due to the fact that you anticipate having to cull heavy once you start farrowing? Or is the overall goal to end up with a good number of sows in production? By the way chuck if you deliver to VT you asked if anyone wanted to buy some pigs so yea bring some up LOL

Plans are to ramp up to 75-100 sows right now. It going to take a little time to get to that number. Wanting to start a piglet operation and also have a good steady source of feeders for ourself. We will eventually cull a little harder than we are right now but in the beginning stages, I'm not being too picky unless there is an obvious issue. VT is a good way from us. Afraid the haul bill would scare you away. hahaha. Thanks for watching.

Where did you get those sliding insulators at? It looks like you can squeeze them and slide them up or down.

I picked them up at Tractor Supply but this is essentially the same thing: amzn.to/2XwcYtp They are 2 piece that screw together around a round post. Unless you just get them super tight, you can slide them up and down to the proper height. They work great!
