I've just entered my early 30s and here is what I've learnt through trial and error (happy to see I have tried a few things Dr Idriss recommended. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED TO AVOID: * Fermented toners like Missha's, just can't seem to handle them *Anything with beads or worse grains in it * Strong acids or anything that is marketed as being strong/gives dramatic results like peels *Hot water on my face in the shower or at the sink, I use warm only * Regular use of cotton pads, the rubbing multiple days in a row is irritating *Fragrance, including masking fragrance, essential oils, perfumes etc where possible. I do have the thick Ceramidin in the tube but if anyone knows a spot on dupe without fragrance please let me know! * Anything with menthol or weird cooling or even warming sensations * Hyaluronic acid where possible, I just don't think the Melbourne climate is humid enough * Drinking a lot of alcohol or applying drying alcohol containing products WHAT MY SKIN LOVES * Just a splash of water in the morning, no cleansing twice a day * A simple routine, only one active in rotation at a time (e.g. retinol OR vit c, not both) * Double cleansing with a cleansing oil then a gentle second cleanser * Not exfoliating more than twice per week and using PHAs to do so. * A very occlusive moisturiser like QV or Ceramidin with ceramides and shea butter applied to damp skin * A 'baby' retinol like the Neutrogena silver jar that isn't super strong. * IN WINTER layering moisturisers (so a lighter one underneath a thick one)

Rice berry face wash is my go-to for sensitive skin. I've tried countless others, but none have the same impact on my acne as rice berry. My face feels moisturized and glowing after each wash. I also use rice berry vitamin C face serum in the morning, which is pH balanced.

The first thing I value about this rice berry face cleanser is its soft nature. It completely washes my face without removing important moisture, leaving my skin being fresh and refreshed. I have extremely sensitive skin that has allergic reaction to any kind of perfume/fragrance or essential oil in any kind of product that is supposed to apply on skin (from creams, shower gels, deodorant, you name it). I have to admit that it took a long time for me to realize what is triggering horrible reactions on my skin (my skin starts with itching, getting red with strong burning reaction that develops to swelling and changing texture - that happens immediately upon aplication, and always lasts for a couple of minutes that seems like eternity). I agree that it is very important to know your skin and to know products that works for you and what to avoid (I will never just blind buy a skincare product, no matter how promising it sounds or how good marketing is, I always ended with burning and swollen face and the product is just a waste of money). Thank you for recommending Aveeno oat line, it is fantastic! I also love and use Cerave and Vanicream brands, La Roche toleriane line and Cicaplast, and will definitely try some new recomended products from this video 😊

If you feel like your skin is not super oily in the morning after just going with water skip washing your face in the morning. So happy to see you cover this topic Dr Idriss. My brand formulates for sensitive skin. I prefer the wording ‘no added fragrance’ over ‘fragrance free’. ‘Fragrance free’ can still include essential oils, to which my skin is sensitive (as would be many with sensitive skin) and yet some products will have a natural scent which does not come from essential oils and does not cause any irritation - like the natural smell of Rooibos tea in my products. I’m interested to know your thoughts on Vitamin C - L Ascorbic Acid. You mentioned not using products with high pH like some cleansers but did not mention low PH which can also be irritating. I am unable to use LAA but am ok with other Vit C derivatives because of the higher pH. Do you recommend Vit C serums to your clients with sensitive skin and if so which ones? Thank you so much. Bev 💚
@Elyse27 Жыл бұрын
So glad someone mentioned this! I would actually trust “I scented” over “fragrance free” because every second product that is “fragrance free” has essential oils. Um, what? Take sukin for example, big chemist brand sensitive skin focused company, list of exclusions (including fragrance) as long as your arm then has essential oils. Did no one tell drug companies people with sensitivities to fragrance have sensitivities to essential oils? What possible reason would one not want fragrance but then be happy to receive essential oils? They are one and the same!

Finally 😁 I inherited sensitive skin from my mom. My face itself is sensitive but an area around eyes is crazy sensitive. It tolerates only very few ingredients and especially I cannot use anything which dries the skin otherwise I have to deal with eczema. To protect the area I use argan oil since that is pretty much the only ingredient my skin tolerates if it is irritated. For the rest of my face I found several game changers: mild face wash, mineral water in spray (I use the one from Vichy), vitamin C serum and Centella asiatica. I also recommend moisturizers with snail secretion filtrate because it helps to recover your skin quicker. Also I always read all the ingredient lists and check ingredients I don't know before I buy any product. I avoid everything synthetic which can cause irritation plus drying ingredients and several bio extracts I know my skin hates like rosemary. The steps above helped me a lot so if there is someone struggling reading this, I hope I could help you too.

I’ve dealt with dry, sensitive, acne-prone skin all my life that’s gotten worse as I’ve aged. It can’t handle fragrance, parfum, essential oil (especially lavender and citrus), or terpenes in skincare. It won’t tolerate any lanolin, mineral oil, petrolatum, salicylate, resveratrol, or AHA. Plus, I have a bunch of other allergies or intolerances that can make products tricky. I’ve been repairing a damaged skin barrier recently and found the Avene and LRP product lines for that unhelpful. You’ll probably cringe when I tell you that I cleanse with jojoba oil and moisturize with shea butter. I also use a simple sunscreen, just zinc oxide, sunflower oil, beeswax, and vitamin E. It’s what has worked in the past, and it’s working now.

Hey Dr. Shereene! Would you please be able to make a comprehensive video about hormonal acne in adults? What causes it and just a deep dive into that subject (I'm kind of a skincare nerd so I like to know all the details haha 😂) Also products suggestions that are best suited for that (I use adapalene) but I find that pms symptoms around that time of the month make my skin super clogged up regardless of using adapalene nightly & I get mad breakouts of whiteheads around my chin, jaw, and slightly under the jaw/chin area and neck. Not to mention as of last month my chest and upper back 😥 Struggling to find good information online!

One thing to be aware of, if you experience a reaction to an essential oil (often used for fragrance) be very careful trying other esstional oils as if you are allergic to linalool (like me, found out through patch testing) they use varying concentrations of this fragrance enhancer in almost ALL plant and fruit oils (which are used for fragrance). After finding out I was allergic to linalool my derm said not to use anything with fragrance, even shampoo and conditioner, which is a major struggle.

Obviously, I have sensitive skin. Of all the symptoms you listed, the only thing I have never had in my entire 74 years of life is acne. Aveeno is kind to my skin. And I appreciate the education you provide. I am very fair-skinned & blue-eyed. Almost as soon as the sun rests on my skin, I feel it burning. I don't mind winter except what happens to my skin. I dread showers because afterwards, for HOURS, my skin not only itches, it burns. I have tried so many products. We installed a shower filter. It solved the burning skin problem the first year....but not the next ! I ordered a product Dr.Idriss suggested....it's due to arrive Friday. The Bioderma Atoderm cleansing oil. I'm going to try that in the shower. Keeping fingers crossed it helps. I bought the Aveeno serum today. I use several Aveeno products. I can't use CeraVe, tho. My skin won't absorb it. It sits on top of my skin for hours & hours, feeling sticky. Gorgeous head wrap....LOVE that shade of blue.

This might be something basic that you've already been doing, I just want to make sure you know to use body lotion immediately after showering. Either quickly pat your skin dry and then moisturise, or even apply moisturiser straight after without toweling off (stay in the warm steamy bathroom while doing it so you don’t freeze haha)

Yes my face is pretty much constantly red. And I do have pink undertones in my skin as well which makes it look worse. My skin doesn't like most products, so I've pretty much resorted to baby soap as a cleanser, and tissue oil, or very natural moisturizers with like natural ingredients.... but still 80% of the time just have like a red face, so clearly that's not working so well either. I should mention I do also live in a very hot and humid place though, which never helps - especially with my Hashimotos, I just have a complete intolerance to the heat. Winter works better for my skin 😅 I'm definitely gonna try these tips though, hopefully they help🙏 I'm probably always going to be a little bit pink, because of my skin tone, but I would really prefer not to be RED.

Hello dr.Idris!🌷 I like this video, it's all about me. I am not sure if I have a sensitive or sensitized skin. I tried all products you mentioned. My skin didn't liked dr.Jart cicapair tiger grass serum. That citrusy smell and feel my skin really hated, it became more dry and red.😳 My every day routine contains Vichy 3 in 1 makeup remover for sensitive skin, Vichy vit.c ampules, The Ordinary Buffet serum, Cera Ve moisturizing lotion and almond oil. My daily SPF 50 is La Roche Posay Athelios, which is quickly disappearing from drug store shelves lately...🤔 Once a week I use The Ordinary Lactic acid 10% (their Glycolic acid 7% was too much for my skin) and once a week A313 pomade. I don't really like these vaselines, I feel that my skin is stop breathing. I loved Avene unscented cream for dry skin, which you showed. Once by mistake I bought another one, it made my skin red, that perfume in French products just kills me.😒 Love Korean skin care which is free of any scent, it's so soothing, I can use ten layers of serums and lotions. I don't need to wait one week if I don't like something, my skin reacts in 5 min! 😳 I can recommend one Indi brand with their soothing products for dry/sensitive skin. I was hucked up by words "oat oil". I am using their face mask once a week during the night and I love my skin in the morning. The brand is called Indy beauty Therese Lindgren. It's 100% vegan. 🙌🎆💞

I'm a Fitzpatrick 1 and have dry, rosacea-prone skin, and I have been loving the Skin Fix lipid restore body lotion. I use it on face and body, and it is really nice and moisturizing without being horrifyingly greasy. It is fragrance free, has ceramides, colloidal oatmeal, and rice bran oil, and you can get like a 10 oz tub for $45, which isn't super cheap but is worth it (at least for me) because a little really does go a long way and it's just so nice. Also been having good luck with Nivea's spf 50 water gel -- it is a non-US chemical sunscreen (made in Japan) and it does have hyaluronic acid, but it's fragrance free, leaves no white cast whatsoever, and man does it feel nice and hydrating on the face. I have also had success with Dr Different's (Korean brand) retinals; my face can't quite handle Differin but retinol does very little for me, so I'd totally recommend those.

I don't mind passing up products, it saves me money! I haven't been patch tested, but have had acne, welts on my chin, stinging, burning and contact dermatitis around my eyes. No reoccurrences since I've eliminated fragrance. Fragrance also gives me sinus headaches. I find keeping it simple works best, cleanser, moisturizer, low strength tretinoin and sunscreen. However, I'm surprised at most of your choices, since you recommended fragrance free. Many of them have flower extracts and essential oils, all of which are fragrance I believe. The First Aid Beauty even has limonene. I realize sensitive skin doesn't really have a definition, since we are all sensitive to different ingredients. Also, I know companies formulate the fragrance components to be less irritating. Still, I don't think most of your recommendations would be considered fragrance free. At least my skin wouldn't, lol. The best moisturizer for my reactive skin is the Cetaphil Redness Relieving Moisturizer, and I highly recommend it. As for serums, I'd go with Paula's Choice. They seem to be truly fragrance free.
