This is proper good stuff from Sheriff. Far too many "how to" tutorials are little more than reading off a series of wiki notes and performance stats with the ususal "be faster", or "be higher" advice that pretty much applies irrespective of air-frame.Sheriff goes out on a limb here and provides some solid practical application tips, and he anchors all of it on (1) the specifics of the way 777/1C have modelled this aircraft and (2) likely tactical situations from mutliplayer gaming.

I agree. Personally play with kB and joystick so I don't really need to learn the cockpit controls beyond reading the guages. What interests me is engine management under various conditions for each plane. Also a basic vid listing the differences in various planes and specific requirments to maintain optimal engine management, prop control, boost/trim and which planes have automatic controls etc all in one tidy vid would be great for New players like me...

Well, after watching this video, I managed to shoot down 5 Bf 109’s in 2 sorties in my La-5 campaign, including an engagement where I rescued my flight leader from two Bf109s that were attacking him. Before, I never felt as comfortable trying to shoot things down in the La-5 as the other Soviet fighters, and now I feel as if I have a better idea of what I should be doing. I think one of the best parts of this video was your description of an unskilled La-5 trying to dive on and chase down a skilled Bf109, and how the 109 could easily equalize the energy states, and then take over the fight. I can tell you, as an unskilled La-5 pilot, I felt as if you were describing my typical engagement! Once again, fantastic video.

When I see you describe a dogfight versus a 190 it makes me realise how inefficient I am with that plane (190)... I always loose all my speed and finally get out-turned by la5s ... I guess i'll rewatch tutorials on how to play it. Keep up the good vids !!

You gotta stay fast ion the 190, make your pass then either zoom climb if its safe and have another go or just get out of there and reset of find another target.

I am a NEWB but have flown real planes and many sims and i LOVE this fighter! Thank you! The other fighters just seem sluggish and unrealistic yet again I have never flown a 109 obviously!

Excellent presentation! I'm newbie to gaming, flight simulation and IL2. I joined ACG in order to have air combat training and someone to fly with. Looks like they need Russian pilots; I am likely to be assigned to fly a La-5. Not exactly what I had in mind since I love the German planes. Oh well, so I have begun to practice and learn; maybe I will be allowed switch sides at a later time offering? Thanks again for your presentation, Van

Hmm, in a situation as outlined in 10:40 - 11:40 , how can one react as the 109 pilot in this situation? Level out and head towards friendly territory?

Stay on higher altitudes if possible. If you dive to the deck your options are limited.

Awesome video Sheriff! As usual :) I was wondering if including tacview recordings would help, I'm not sure of the state of tacview and MP servers though. If it does work then it would improve the visualisation of some of these tactics immensely!

Tac View works, but I found not a fitting way to implement it. And its of course a little tedious to find THAT recording of that 2 month old situation you want to show.

I personally just have lowered my gamma and that's it. It's mostly about practise and a good setup screen. And not graphic tricks

What ever you seem fit to use. Really I have seen plenty of different convergencees of different pilots working. I personally use 400m.

its funny, your first comment is about the poor guns, but ever since the original il2 fb ive found the 2 shivak 20mm in the cowling to be the best anti fighter armament in the versions of the game. Mind you, 30mm would be even better.

its not about the guns themselves but about the placement which makes hitting targets for unexperienced pilots hard

I have a hard time hitting anything with them because the plane is so wobbly, the fire rate is low and the bullets are slow. In a turn it is almost impossible to hit a target further than 250m, as you need to aim so far ahead you don't see anything. Ideally I get closer to the target, but sometimes the only opportunity is at a distance of 300-400m. Just spraying around is also no option with the low amount of ammo.

@@razorblade7108 tbh, I rarely open fire at more than 150 meters, and then I'll try to wait for a no-deflection shot. Like Erich Hartmann said "fill the windscreen with the enemy".
