Agreed, the casting of Moriarty as a young, small, higher-voiced man is totally unexpected and surprisingly perfect. The ultimate unexpected villain, but still completely insane and terrifying. :)

I started watching this show around its third season, and I have to say, I am SO glad I didn't have to wait 2 years to see the resolution to this cliffhanger ending. That would have been maddening, for sure! :) I watched this series with my sister, and now whenever I want to freak her out (or make her laugh), I just say in Moriarty's sing-song voice, "No, you won't!" Lol.

you actually said it so well, Moriarty is bored he says that ordinary people are boring so he plays with Sherlock. Sherlock and Moriarty being super smart it's hard to them to "have fun" and live. So Holmes have Watson who make him more human, who bring emotions in his life, Jim doesn't have anyone. Also his "staying alive" ringtone means a lot I guess. Everyone around Jim are predictable, ordinary. Their problem is how to stay alive from such a boring life. Remember in first episode, how far Sherlock was ready to go, to take risk just because he's bored and that he wanna prove one's point.

In 2011 my teacher decided to let the class watch Sherlock, we thought it was a movie because of the long duration of per episode (which was something new for most us). I remember everyone in the class got frustrated at the ending, it was quite anticlimatic (for a movie). Like a year and a half later my cousin told me that he watched Sherlock, i told him that the ending left me and my class mates frustrated. It was at that moment i found out that it was a tv show and that the new season came out a couple of months ago. I binged the entire show and Sherlock was actually my first real tv show that i’ve watched, it was best show i’ve watched and no show topped it for me until i watched Breaking Bad 2 years ago. I randomly came across your Breaking bad reactions, i enjoyed and binged it all, now you are reacting to my 2nd favourite show of all time. You girls rock🤘

When Moriarty said he will burn Sherlock he meant all the Sherlock's credibility, prestige etc., by proving Sherlock to be fake in the eyes of London and also, he already met and talked to Molly and he deciphered that she liked and Sherlock and Sherlock liked her shown in last season last episode so he knew he will burn his heart too and that reminded me (I could be wrong on the timeline of this...but I think) he already met Sherlock's sister too and formed the plan shown in last season so he knew he will burn Sherlock's childhood too by bringing sherlock's dead childhood friend memories back.

17:16 I mean... Sherlock needed a break too - like, for basic things like eating, taking a bath, slightly resting and he probably was searching for things in that time too. He was also working on his brother's case, so I definitely wouldn't say he lacks empathy. He just knew he needed a break because if not, he could end up failing and making more people die. He didn't want to risk that. We don't actually see for how long he works in all those cases, but the time limits to them were more than 8 hours, and Sherlock needed more than half almost every time, so he would be exhausted by the end of it. I'm gonna guess a lot of comments already said that he cares and has empathy (which is also clearly shown in this episode, but not necessarily easy to catch on first watch), so.... That's it

This version of Moriarty is interesting. I like it now, but I didn't like it at first because it is very different from the books, both his character and his modus operandi. In the books he was older, a math genius and a professor, and his motivation wasn't to play games, his interests were more prosaic (money). He organized crime so that it couldn't be detected (basically the opposite job to Sherlock's). He never participated personally on the crimes (unlike the version of Moriarty we see on the show). In the books, Sherlock realised something like that was going on, and as a result he started making Moriarty's job way more difficult. Moriarty didn't want to kill him, so he "suggested" to Sherlock that he should stop, but when Sherlock didn't, he tried to kill him. It got to the point where Sherlock couldn't even walk on the street without all sorts of almost fatal "accidents" happening around him. He eventually had to leave London. By the way, you should read about Adam Worth (particularly after he went to London), he is the criminal that inspired Doyle to write this character. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Worth

And the main twist is, he is not Moriarty, he is an actor who works for Moriarty. Moriarty never shows his face, he is older than Sherlock. He is a mastermind but also a coward, he always remains behind the curtain. that's why he killed the old lady for revealing his one single personality. there should be more seasons revealing the real Moriarty, but BBC just stops in season 4.
