UK film nerd (did it for my degree)- US television uses a lot more classical hollywood narrative editing where the emotional punch is the guide so emotional time rules over chronological time, UK tv is influenced more by european realism -it's kind of a hybrid- which prefers to have more psychological realism, so you postpone emption to make you do the running and transitions bc you're going more for psychological identification with the situation of the character rather than witnessing their emotional story (in very reductive generalised terms). Also british tv doesn't have to consolodate. You can see some of the change with netflix on American tv production, but british tv grew from non-commercial channels so there were no advert breaks so the suspense building can be slower since you don't have to build in an emotional hook to keep interest after the break. US tv is being influenced more by european style though, usually more for emotional realism but the wider shots, less cuts, slower build and internal time. It's a very intresting subject. You might find it interesting to watch something like Versailles, which is French but made in English (to appeal to wider european market). It has a very different style to most US tv but more similar to British. You get it spelled out a lot less the boundry between internal psychological reality and external, and the way emotion is played is subtely different. They also show people moving through the landscape a lot more, and the dirt and grime of the landscape so you feel repulsed or awed by the contrast. (Although warning has way more graphic sex scenes than US tv). Plus, it's a really cool way to learn about Louis the Sun King and the building of Versailles, and is pretty popular in Europe.

Just finished watching the Doctor Who reaction to The Waters of Mars and this features the same actress playing Soo Lin Yao. i like that Shane mistook Sherlock for the Doctor, Benedict Cumberbatch would have made a fantastic Doctor.
@karkatvantas95576 жыл бұрын
He actually auditioned for Matt Smith's role, and Matt auditioned for Sherlock. I believe Moffat encouraged them to try out for the other roles. Benedict would have made a good Doctor at the time, but he's too famous now.
@karkatvantas95576 жыл бұрын
Yes, obviously. You want the actor to be iconic for playing the Doctor, not attached to another iconic role like Benedict is to Sherlock. The only exception is Peter Capaldi, but Malcolm Tucker is a British icon, not so much a global one, and even then a lot of British people don't know of Tucker, so Capaldi can still be iconic for Doctor Who. Obviously the actors can go on and do other things, but they're still known for playing the Doctor.

A good advice. Don't notebook and watch superb stories. Take them in fully. Don't be in the mindstate of "I need to remember this thing lets write it down" ...
