Martin Freeman (John) and Amanda Abbington (Mary) actually split up after 16 years together during the filming of season 4, so the final scene in Sherlock's flat felt especially heartbreaking to watch.

Toby Jones has a long career in tv and movies. He's been in Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy, Jurassic World (Fallen Kingdom) and The Captain America films. The stories at the time were that, Culverton, the character Toby Jones played, was based on a very famous British tv & radio icon called Jimmy Saville who had a career spanning over 50 years from 1957 to 2011. He became a radio 1 DJ (UK's biggest radio station at the time), presented Top of the Pops (UK's biggest music show), and had a prime time BBC show in the 1970s & 80s called Jim'll Fix It, where children wrote in with something they'd always wanted to do & he'd make their dreams come true. He also used to do loads of charity work and ran marathons (usually in his trademark gold tracksuit while puffing on a cigar, well into his 70s. Because of his "celebrity", many politicians and senior figures bent over backwards for him, including giving him free rein in hospitals. After his death in 2011 it came to light that there had been a tv expose on him being a sexual predator but the BBC had stopped the show being broadcast to protect his image. Then a show did come out exposing him, following which hundreds of people started came forward claiming he'd sexually assaulted them. This abuse covered his whole career. Further to this, it turned out senior execs at the BBC had been aware of at least some of his behaviour and he'd been banned from the Child Line charity years earlier, and, when victims had gone to the police to report his crimes, they'd been batted away in disbelief. Towards the end of his career Saville used to openly boast about how powerful his friends were and that he was untouchable. As you can imagine, when this show went out as one of the biggest shows in the UK, and at prime time on the BBC, it was seriously creepy to watch.

More so based on Jimmy Saville. Saville donated a lot of money to children's hospitals, would regularly visit, and even had keys to certain wings, rooms, and wards of the hospital where he could do all manner of disgusting things to the children. Some nurses and doctors at the time knew what was going on but he had so much power and influence that their entire careers could be terminated if they displeased Saville in any way. It is truly horrific.

Personally this episode is the best after Reichenbach Fall. I felt really stupid because I didn’t understand that they were all the same woman. I hope they will like the next episode, it is sad that people now think Sherlock is a bad show. And I hope we get to see season 5 in the future(with a better script and writing like in season 1 or 2) I really want to see how Sherlock would interact with and take care of Rosie 😭

Exactly, the way she was written is awful, we are supposed to feel bad for her but the way she is going about it makes it hard to give a crap about her, i missed Moriarty even more in that episode, the only thing we really got of him were his funky dance moves to Queen.
@ipek6851

Meeting John started Sherlock’s character development. As the series continued we started to see Sherlock’s human side more. And I don’t think this was the problem of the show. Him having emotions doesn’t change the fact that how intelligent he is. It adds to his character. One of the most important part of the show was his character arc and if you thought he will always be carefree of course you are going to be disappointed and annoyed because you missed the whole point. I think the problem was after season 2 show started to concentrate on the big picture, it started to have less crimes and less deduction. I’d enjoyed watching well written, different crimes every episode and I think most people preferred that way too. If there will be a fifth season they should make it more like season 1 and 2. Rosie’s father is still alive and healthy, he is capable of taking care of her daughter emotionally and financially and you think he should give her for adoption? And what about Molly? I never saw her going crazy over wanting a baby, she never said something like that or acted that way. Yeah we saw her helping his friend who lost his wife, this shows how a great friend she is. You just said that because she take care of Rosie before or because she is a woman. Of course Sherlock is not a father and I don’t think him as one. But the person he loves the most in the world has a daughter and of course Sherlock will love her too and of course he is going to interact with her. I never said that fifth season should be about Sherlock raising Rosie, butterflies and rainbows!!! He is so human now!!! :)

I have mentioned this in other comments for these reactions, but you really should look into the real relationship between actor *Martin Freeman* _(Watson)_ and *Amanda Abbington* _(Mary)._ It broke my heart when I learned of the details. I'll try and share what I remember... They had been married. They were already married for a bit when she joined the show. But then they got divorced. And still had to make that episode where she died. And then, of course, her appearance after that. They were such a great couple, IMO. But one can never judge a couple from the outside. No one ever should. I can only guess that it was Martin's schedule that put a strain on the relationship. But that is, again, just a guess.

man, this episode had me in tears the first time I saw it. It boggles my mind that they created an episode so brilliant then followed it up with complete garbage. But then even if this episode is probably the best in the entire series it doesn't answer a single question or tie off any loose ends. So it makes complete sense for the final episode to be a complete failure because they left everything to the last minute. to be honest I kinda pretend the 4 season only had one episode in it and I just block out the other two. Especially the last one. That god awful last one.

As usual, excellent reaction and review. Well done picking up on the Sherlock development in character. To me the whole group of series was one long story with intermissions (sometimes very long ones), rather than episodic procedurals. Looking forward to watching your reactions to the finale and seeing how well you have skirted closely to the central issues and the culmination of an exceptional piece of work in re-imagining this Sherlock character - by that I mean the writing, acting and production, giving us mystery, humour and imagination. You have been reading it all so well, despite the very clever misdirections and tricky clues.
