This is probably Cumberbatch's best role, can't see anyone else as Sherlock. Other actors can do it great, but this portrayal is so memorable, it's crazy. Martin Freeman doing some of his best work in this series as well. They are the reason you watch the show, even at it's low points, they are flawless. The chemistry is insane, these roles should be studied. The ability to convey so much drama and comedy is truly impressive.
@6DCNostradaАй бұрын
Freeman's probably at his peak Watson in season 3, so many moments where he shatters you. Moffat handles levity in this series so much better than he did with Doctor Who.

I love this episode, mainly for the side interactions we never got that much of before. It's clear that John has created a real family for Sherlock: colleagues and friends over for Christmas, in Mycroft's confidence, knows Sherlock well enough to understand him and challenge him, and the love they both show toward Mrs. Hudson and Molly. I don't see that Sherlock could have built these kinds of emotional bonds on his own, even if he wanted to.

@stpnwlf9Ай бұрын
While the chemistry between Sherlock and Irene Adler took center stage here, John was still crucial for the various interactions to happen. Ultimately, the entirely Sherlock Holmes narrative is actually about John Watson. After all, he is our point of view character for the stories, being the blogger of this current version and the narrator of all the original stories. We see Sherlock from Watson's POV so even when he is in the background, he is essential to our understanding of Sherlock.

I love all these episodes are a play on original Sherlock Holmes stories, though I think a few of these modernised version are a combination of stories. Might be fun for you to watch a few of the original titles, see what they actual Irene Adler was like. I would suggest the Jeremy Brett version 'the adventures of Sherlock Holmes' as they did quite a lot of the stories and not just the few ones everyone knows, see how they compare to the modern versions.

The new American TV show that just aired their pilot premiere called Matlock decided to steal a tiny bit from this episode of Sherlock. At the very surprisingly twist ending of the Matlock pilot, they put an advertisement with Kathy Bates (who stars as the new Matlock) asking viewers to hashtag "Matlocked". Being a fan of Sherlock myself, I immediately recognized the reference to the "Sherlocked" pass code. I thought it was such a hoot. A mystery show giving a huge nod to another famous mystery show. 🕵♂️👩⚖️🕵♀️🔎📺🔍❤️🔥

That two year gap on a cliff hanger definitely built the hype to the max. I cancelled my whole life to watch the premiers of each season of this...lol!!!! I was tuned in and turned off for this show. Just wait though. The 2nd season cliff hanger was the WORST!!!! Looking forward to your reaction to The Hounds of Baskerville. The 2nd ep of each season tends to be less drama than 1 and 3, but this is my favorite of the 2nd eps. I actually like season 4. Moffat has a long-time marriage to Sue Vertue, who recommended to him that he and Gatiss stop talking about how to do a modern Sherlock Holmes and just do it, and who is the producer of this show. Moffat also named the characters of Steve and Susan on the britcom, _Coupling,_ after himself and his wife.
@HuntingVioletsАй бұрын
"Hamish" is a reference to a Dorothy L. Sayers theory that that's what the H in John H. Watson stands for. She based that on Mrs. Watson appearing to refer to her husband as "James" in "The Man with the Twisted Lip." Hamish is a Scots version of James, and it's suggested that James is a nickname she used for her husband.

The 1895 guess on the phone is a reference to the poem _221b_ by Vincent Starrett, a well-known Sherlockian: *Here dwell together still two men of note* *Who never lived and so can never die:* *How very near they seem, yet how remote* *That age before the world went all awry.* *But still the game's afoot for those with ears.* *Attuned to catch the distant view-halloo:* *England is England yet, for all our fears-* *Only those things the heart believes are true.* *A yellow fog swirls past the window-pane* *As night descends upon this fabled street:* *A lonely hansom splashes through the rain,* *The ghostly gas lamps fail at twenty feet.* *Here, though the world explode, these two survive,* *And it is always eighteen ninety-five.*

53:30 What do you mean? Nudity has been in the mainstream media since the late 1960s, at least here in Europe. When I was a kid here in Austria in the 1980s passing by a kiosk on the street I would instantly see boobies on magazine, newspaper covers or picture postcards. When switching on the TV you saw boobies, booties and bushes - all that stuff. And in Italy the amount of nudity in the media was even more prominent. I rather have the feeling that nudity in public places or in the media is being on the decline these days.

In the story, Irene Adler is his true equal. She doesn’t need him to rescue her from anything. "EVERY MAN IS LIKE THAT" ummmm🙃.... Not these two. Mycroft in every adaptation has been attracted to no gender and no sex (or has he? 😉). Never interested in even pretending to be. Sherlock on the other hand shows signs of being a sapiosexual and sometimes asexual in certain adaptations. Sherlock is attracted to the intelligence of others versus the sex or gender. I think that's what he likes most in Ms. Adler. Low key this is why I believe the author of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, based Sherlock loosely on his friend J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan. People assumed something was wrong with J.M. Barrie and he was a freak because he was more interested in traveling, writing and caring for Peter + his brothers (once their parents died and they were adopted by Barrie) versus getting some nyash 🍆💦.

This episode is based (obviously) on the Sherlock Holmes story, "A Scandal in Bohemia," which was the first of the Holmes short stories, but also on _The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes,_ a film by Billy Wilder (which would make a good reaction). Irene Adler has no romance with Holmes in the original story and is not a villain.

I love that in the novel (if im not mistaken) irene was really there for sherlock to learn not to underestimate women's capabilities to outsmart him, but in the show you can see that the role was split into the few women he's acquainted with. Irene was like the more clear cut obvious way to show him that someone out there can play his game too. I do also like how its not even remotely romantic, and that attraction comes from flirting with intelligence the way sherlock does with moriarty. Also Una Stubbs, bless her, if im not mistaken too, one of the reasons sherlock has a closer relationship with her is because benedict wanted it that way since she was friends with his parents so he was already fond of her so it really makes it look a lot realer in the show
