I've seen all the Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies, and it always makes me smile when Rathbone "plays" the violin. He makes no attempt at all to make it look real. It might be a tv version, but Jeremy Brett is undoubtedly the Holmes to compare with. He only did the Conan Doyle stories, and he did all of them. Brilliantly. Rathbone did very few original stories, which were Americanised, including the use of lots of guns. Not to mention the regular use of the term ‘scotch’ when referring to Scots. They are entertaining films, which I always enjoy, just not very true to Conan Doyle’s intentions.

Nigel Bruce was a very good actor its just his portrayal of Watson that I didn't like.

@@patrickholland6848 I agree with your assessment of the Dr. Watson portrayal in these movies with Rathbone and Bruce. I have seen your term "bumbling fool" and also "buffoon" used over & over to describe this portrayal of Dr. Watson. I think Rathbone did an outstanding job with Holmes and better than all others...except Jeremy Brett. But I have a hard time watching these movies with Rathbone & Bruce precisely because of the Watson portrayal...it diminishes greatly what Rathbone brings to the role of Holmes. What is great about the entire Sherlock Holmes series are the many actors involved that play anything from cameo to major roles. It reminds me of a theater troupe in black and white.

American house and storefronts. Cars are usually right-hand drives, to drive on the left, as they should in the U.K. However the bus shown is left-hand drive with the front entrance on the right, which would never exist in England.

You know, I really think this may be the highest quality Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes film. It works in references to Holmes' canonical adventures, showcases Watson's writing skill (through it's effect on others, if not by actually showing it), has some very touching moments between Holmes and Watson, has reasonably clever villains with an original enough plot, and on the side of the heroes this film really exudes the warmth that came to characterize The Baker Street Dozen in a different way than many of the numerous other portrayals of the detective and company.

Not quite the highest quality film in the series. Dressed To Kill is actually the second iteration of the original ACD story "The Six Napoleons". The first one was 1944's The Pearl Of Death, which, in my view, was closer to the original and a bit better, both for the tension level and one of the few times Holmes gets tripped up by his own ego -which his antagonist takes advantage of twice. But this one was an upswing from the very cheap and unimaginative Terror By Night, does indeed feature some of the best character scenes between Rathbone and Bruce, and was a better movie for the series to go out on than its immediate predecessor film.

This final movie featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce is definitely one of the best written and most suspenseful in the series, and Patricia Morison makes an excellent villainess. I recognize the police commissioner, whose name was Ian Wolfe, from a couple other Sherlock Holmes movies. There were in fact several actors who played multiple roles in the series, but I doubt that too many of the public viewers caught on to the fact that quite a few of the actors were being recycled in different roles.

I'm very much enjoying re-watching these for the first time in years. Rathbone's intensity as Holmes is mesmerizing... but I very much wish they hadn't portrayed Watson as a buffoon! It gets rather tiresome and makes one wonder why Holmes would put up with such an inept partner.

It's possible that Watson is adding comic relief which is the inclusion of a humorous character, scene, or witty dialogue in an otherwise serious work, often to relieve tension.
@fibonaccifanzeroviews78396 жыл бұрын
@@ccsitaround Im sure that's the intent , especially considering the era in which it was filmed. He's over the top goofy but also a pleasant chap.....considering Sherlock is so serious most of the time. Dry English humor is my favorite!!! 😁

close to the end the villain throws a magic knife at holmes and it sticks in the wall by the mantle of the fireplace. but when watson gets up the stairs it is gone from the wall. amazing. nice to know they made these errors then and they still make them in movies today.
@tanyawade51975 жыл бұрын
Yes, but Holmes was so very cool, he didn’t even flinch as that knife flew passed him. Rathbone was such a badass! 🤣🌈
@captur692 жыл бұрын
Its possible the knife was indeed still in the wall...the unfortunate camera angle and the external wall which continues to extrude into the room ' ( creating a corner ) could easily camouflage the knife. That's why we don't see it..

Such a shame that Bruce's Watson was always portrayed as a bit of a buffoon considering that he was supposed to be not only a fully trained Doctor, but also an ex-military officer and a writer of at least moderate success.

I also loved the fashion of this time. My grandmother and I would talk about fashions of this time and later. She didn't care for the styles of this time though this is a sample of what she wore when she was a young girl. She would always say that she was born too early and I was born too late.

I've studied the plot of this movie and I have noted that, without Hymie committing the original break-in, the criminal trio could have obtained all three parts of the message without causing any alarm for Holmes or Scotland Yard! Hilda Courtney could have visited Julian Amory, feigned ignorance as to knowing the tune, and offered to borrow the music box for the sake of learning the tune's title; this ploy would have left Julian alive and grateful for having such a friend's help. After that start, with no crime having been committed, the trio could buy the second box at the gift shop and might take the time to purchase another music box as a way to obtain the final box through an attempted trade at the Kilgore home.
