....SH: people have died! ...M(oriarty): that's what people DO ....M(ycroft): everybody dies They are so strangely parallel
@kangaroo98164 жыл бұрын
There are so many people who hurt Sherlock (not always intentionally) and whose names start with M - Moriarty, Magnussen, Mycroft, Mary Morstan (double M!). Then there's also Molly and Mike (Stamford) and Mrs. Martha Hudson. Ms everywhere. xD Except for Eurus, who disrupts the pattern, and John Watson whose surname starts with an M flipped over, just like Sherlock's first name William. The only other M-less characters close to Sherlock are Adler and Lestrade I think. And Redbeard. It could be even taken a step further - characters who have M surnames are Sherlock's enemies (Morstan, Moriarty, Magnussen) while M first names signify Sherlock's friends, family or at least neutral acquintances (Mycroft, Molly, Martha, Mike, Mary). Mary's case is all the more interesting as her name is fake. So is maybe Moriarty's. God, I hate insomnia. xD Makes me think about the weirdest crap.

Sherlock isn’t a sociopath. A sociopath is devoid of emotions. Sherlock pushes his away, numbs them. I try to as well. Because the emotions hurt. They’re too strong and they take you over and they break you down. So you pretend you don’t have any because it’s the easiest way through. Sherlock hurts, he just doesn’t want to show it.
@christinabeyer92983 жыл бұрын
Of course Sherlock isn't a sociopath, not even a so called "high functioning sociopath" which don't really exist. "High functioning" is a term which is usually used for people in the autistic spectrum who are intelligent enough to adapt to the society and environment. Sherlock used the remark "High functioning sociopath" as a mask he hided behind to scare people off of seeing the truth and to get hurt and bullied. Autistic people often speak of themselves this way to set theirselfs apart from others.
@user-mv4ix7jd8o2 жыл бұрын
A sociopath can feel, dude. Read the official criteria for one to be diagnosed with ASPD A. Disregard for and violation of others rights since age 15, as indicated by one of the seven sub features: 1. Failure to obey laws and norms by engaging in behavior which results in criminal arrest, or would warrant criminal arrest 2. Lying, deception, and manipulation, for profit or self-amusement, 3. Impulsive behavior 4. Irritability and aggression, manifested as frequently assaults others, or engages in fighting 5. Blatantly disregards safety of self and others, 6. A pattern of irresponsibility and 7. Lack of remorse for actions (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) 8. The other diagnostic Criterion are: B. The person is at least age 18, C. Conduct disorder was present by history before age 15 D. and the antisocial behavior does not occur in the context of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2013)
@manapaws5507 Жыл бұрын
@@user-mv4ix7jd8o And yet here we are using the diagnostic criteria to diagnose one of the most intelligent fictional characters to exist. Do you treat this criterion as the Bible? It is also not a secret that those who are exceptionally gifted (IQ greater than 160) experience a far greater range of emotions than others and their motivations cannot be quantified with simplistic explanations. Sherlock Holmes, based on the books and countless shows made of him, was a source of good and not a common rodent or villain who acted simply from chemical or primal urges.
@user-mv4ix7jd8o Жыл бұрын
@@manapaws5507 Well, yes, the criteria is the top priority to define a sociopath, as it was not made after the term. The term was made after the criteria, meaning this IS, at it's essence, what a sociopath is lol. Also, IQ is just one type of intelligence, and has nothing to do with the emotions you feel. That has to do with EQ. Please investigate about a topic before accusing others of being wrong. No, random internet videos don't count as investigating
@manapaws5507 Жыл бұрын
@@user-mv4ix7jd8o IQ and EQ are connected since, as I said, those who higher intelligence experience a greater range of emotions and aware of more stimuli in their environment. Also, quoting the diagnostic criteria is similar to watching a KZbin video on the subject. We can throw around diagnoses all day but it accomplishes nothing, especially with fictional characters.

Hey! Don't be like that! It's always gonna be hard the first time. My first video here is not good either and I still cringe when I watch it hahahahaha (my main problem was the voiceover)... I was lucky that my sister used to play around in video-editing when she was in high school and I was in grade school... I was the annoying little sibling who sticks around, annoying the older one, so I got to grow up learning the gist of it. We used Microsoft, too... It took a lot of work but you can still make brilliant videos with it! It just takes patience and time. Though I didn't have friends until my last year before heading to university, I spent my time in the arts to occupy my loneliness lmao I had Sherlock, then, too. I've been in this fandom for 8 years now, so technically, I'm really late in giving my love HAHAHHAHAHA In the beginning, I used Filmora and iMovie in my MacBook... Around halfway last year, I used Filmora and Premiere Pro... then by October, my MacBook broke and I had a Windows computer, then I used Filmora but now solely use Premiere Pro... I highly recommend Sony Vegas though... I'd kill to have that app... I used Sony Vegas when I was still in high school for my school videos (which I'm proud of but angry that I wasn't able to save). Nightingale Blues, another sherlockian whom I talk to all the time, uses Sony Vegas a lot, too... Though, I remember Sony Vegas being a pain in the ass to use, but so worth it.

LOL Yes!! Someone knows and understands me now. I know what it's like to be the younger, annoying sibling. It sucks having a brother who is six years older and when he's is amazing at making, like videos and GIFs and it so annoying cause I'm so much worse. Guess I'll get there. So Sony Vegas and Filmora. Are those compatible with the Windows 10 OS?

We had a discussion about this on Tumblr. I pointed out that Sherlock had prevented four separate suicides in four separate seasons, and none of them were influenced by his friends. Sherlock was the one who initiated them. *Series 01.* He took John Watson around London with him to reassure the man that he was not broken up by the war. *Series 02.* He talked to Henry Knight and immediately told him the truth about his demons and reassured him that he was not turning “crazy.” *Series 03.* He talked to Major James Sholto that there may be the perfect time to die but it was not that day or any day soon. *Series 04.* He accompanied “Faith Smith” all around London and threw her gun away so she had less options for suicide. Sherlock had always been kind and I hated it when people think it was his friends who made him that way. No, it was his friends who taught him not to fear that side of him that he always wanted to keep hidden.

I feel like Sherlock didn't want to admit he had friends or want any because that would mean more people who cared enough to be angry that he would get hurt. He's the type to get into the most dangerous of situations, before there wasn't a person who would scold him silly because he failed to think about how his actions affected them. He thinks, he calculates he is cunning he is absolutely brilliant but he doesn't think of anyone but himself sometimes therefore he doesn't think he would hurt anyone when he himself does something ingenious but equally risky or stupid for some people.

God, I’m so very sorry I happen to be seeing this on the 18th of January. It would have been almost miraculous to see this on the sixth. OH yes, and I should probably mention up front that I adored it! I am presently going thru all the Sherlock videos I could find that you had made bc I was so blown away by your Moriarty video, and I am thrilled that I found so many. Bc you have a gift. And it’s sort of unclear to me why more ppl haven’t seen your videos. OTOH, I’m just seeing (most) of them today. It turns out I HAVE seen a few; I just wasn’t bright enough to go to your personal site and look for others… And, yes, of COURSE the ones I’ve seen are in my fav column, bc I was looking at those and your video came up on my regular KZbin site, sort of like: why don’t you have THIS video, moron? And I am thrilled that occurred. Oh yes. I almost forgot what I wanted to say re Sherlock in general. I guess I don’t (believe) I’ve been saying he isn’t/wasn’t kind prior to Johns entry into his life. But I definitely feel that John showed him how to express emotion, what not to say, how to accept compliments, etc etc. I can’t remember if it was just the video before but in one of your recent videos about siblings, I mentioned how much I loved the Sherlock/Mycroft dynamic. And there’s a point in the show where Mycroft (unlike his normal self) tells Sherlock that his loss would break his heart. And apparently John hasn’t gotten that far w Sherlock & the brothers NEVER say things like that to one another & Sherlock is stuck in the garden stating seriously: what the hell am I supposed to do w that?! (But he gets there by season 4…)

Long, long comment incoming, but I had to get this all off my chest, so bear with me. Here goes: 3:57 YOU. YOU GET IT. Speaking from my own personal experience as an autistic person in a neurotypical world, I don’t really think Sherlock is in fact a sociopath. I think that Sherlock is an autistic polymath and (I would argue) Highly Sensitive Person, who has encountered so much trauma and hurt at the hands of other people that at some point he reached emotional burnout and let everything go numb. This is something I do a lot when the experience of life is too much and I’m feeling too much, though not nearly to the extent that Sherlock does. It’s different than depression, but it’s similar in that your emotions suddenly shut down and stay down as a way of self-preservation because feeling has for the time being become painfully exhausting. It doesn’t mean that you don’t care anymore-you still care just as much at the deepest level, but you just can’t muster the emotions people usually associate with caring. So now imagine feeling no driving passion for anyone or anything, but you still love them just as much as before and so you go through all the motions if you even have the strength to do that much. That should give you a pretty decent idea. It’s like trying to run but both your legs are stiff. It’s harder, and it still leaves an ache in your heart, but it hurts less than being crushed by an overwhelming abundance of feelings. Here’s where I see this in Sherlock. Sherlock, even from the beginning, has a very good grasp of human nature and feelings (this is something a lot of neurodivergent people can relate to)-“Bitterness is a paralytic. Love is a much more vicious motivator.” Clearly, though he pretends not to understand “ordinary people” and why they do what they do, he _does_ understand. Over the course of the show, we see Sherlock opening up more and more as he finds people who love him and whom he loves right back with increasing confidence. As he finds people he can be safe with, he slowly recovers his emotions. By Season 3 especially (I particularly have The Sign of Three in mind) it becomes undeniable that Sherlock actually _loves_ people, the world, and the joys of being alive. He’s great with kids, wants to hug every dog, kisses his friends when he’s happy/excited, loves dancing…so you have to wonder why he doesn’t just exude cinnamon roll energy when he so clearly is one. But sadly, we get the answer pretty clearly at the end of that same episode. That moment after he’s just bared his heart and soul for hundreds of people (for the second time that day!) and he’s looking around for someone to share his happiness with, every single person turns aside from him and refuses him in this moment. We can literally watch the happiness go out of him. This experience of being rejected isn’t anything new to Sherlock, but it might be the most painful example of it in the whole show. Up to this point, nearly all of Sherlock’s attempts to connect with others have led to him being called a freak and a psychopath. (And while he projects an air of aloofness and superiority, in all of his most vulnerable moments we see that his actual self-image is deeply negative as a result.) Now that he’s finally in a comfortable enough place emotionally that he can bring himself to open up like this, when it might even be that he’s ready to start feeling normally again, to have people _still_ ignore him and not want him is agonizing. As an autistic person, I literally live with this constantly-because the simple reality is that society designed the world without me and the way I am in mind. So I often feel (many autistics relate to this) that the world doesn’t really want me. Add to this his traumatic childhood and troubled adolescence, and it’s no wonder he’s been in a state of emotional burnout for so very, very long. He’s been hurt so much, he’s felt so much (and on some residual level still does,) and it’s only gotten him even more hurt so many times that he eventually couldn’t take it anymore. So for years until he met John, he just stopped feeling. But he didn’t stop caring. He still displayed concern for morality and people in the simple fact that he didn’t take Mycroft’s path even though he could have. He still wanted, at bottom, to put his talents to good use, even if he could no longer feel any more emotional reward for doing so than he would performing the tasks of a government official. Even when he got nothing out of it but a brief distraction from his own loneliness, he still made the choice to put his gifts to the use of the good. And what all this means is that, no matter what his neurotype is (I’m more than willing to hear other arguments,) even if he does struggle with empathy, he still is brimming with something far, far more important and admirable than empathy-COMPASSION. See, empathy, we can argue, is a somewhat selfish motive by itself, because in doing what’s right for another’s sake you also rid yourself of the unpleasant feelings they were dealing with. Compassion, however, isn’t just a feeling, but a conscious choice regardless of what’s in it for you. Sherlock was _always_ kindhearted and selfless. But he needed a good, supportive family in his life every day, to love him and be loved by him if he was going to heal and embrace himself and be happy. And no matter what walks of life we come from, that’s something all of us need in the end. What a stunningly beautiful edit. I subscribed.

First things first, yes, I do know that im more than a year late. Second, I think that the show is called “Sherlock” because it is about him. The “Holmes” part is the genius, the crime solver, the detective. If they wanted to make the show all about solving crime, why not call it Holmes or Sherlock Holmes? At least in my head, the cases in the episodes is just some way to “hide” Sherlock’s emotions. S1 E1: As stated in the video (well, actually in the subtitles but it’s still part of the video so...) Sherlock saves John from suicide. He also shows signs of being kind (when John complimented Sherlock after he told Lestrade all the evidence, he told John that it’s fine.) S1 E2: Now, I haven’t really rewatched this episode much, mainly because I like all the other episodes more than it, so i cant really give an explanation here :\ S1 E3: If you’ve seen it, you already know which part I’m going to talk about. The ending, where Sherlock compliments John after Moriarty supposedly goes away about how brave he was. S2 E1: Sherlock *definitely* loves Irene. S2 E2: Again, as stated by subtitles (im gonna refer to these “saving someone from suicide” ones as “SSS” just to save time.) Sherlock helps Henry and makes him not kill himself. S2 E3: Ok, im just gonna start off by saying how much I LOVE this episode. Sherlock fakes his death to save John, Lestrade, and Mrs. Hudson. Yes, the snipers were killed and Sherlock’s suicide was just, as I understand it, for shits and giggles butstill. S3 E1: He saves John’s life again by stealing a motorcycle. S3 E2: SSS, and Sherlock’s entire speech compliments John. S3 E3: Sherlock kills a man just so that Mary could be safe. S3 E4: As much as I have seen this episode, I haven’t been able to find anything about Sherlock (modern one, not the old time version inside of his head) and his emotions. S4 E1: Some emotions shows when Mary sacrificed herself for Sherlock. S4 E2: SSS. Also, he opens up to John about how he is not ok. S4 E3: Right... Where to start? Sherlock tells Mycroft that he liked his performance. The entire sequence where he had to make Molly say “I love you.” Sherlock offers to shoot himself just so that John and Mycroft can live. His dedication on helping the little girl. All the emotion when Eurus tells him that he never had a dog. And of course, when he becomes the friend and brother that Eurus wanted him to be. i would add a conclusion here but my hands are already tired from typing so much stuff so bye or something.

Thank you for your wonderful comment. You are right. But in one point I must correct you: Yes, Irene was for sure attracted to Sherlock, but Sherlock was never attracted to her romantically or physically. To all her flirtation trys "have dinner" he had only one answer: "Why I should have dinner, if I wasn't hungry." Sherlock admired Irene for her intelligence and cleverness. She was the only woman in his life who he could compare too on an intellectual level. Steven Moffat stated in an interview, that Irene was only in this episode as a mirror to Sherlock, but never a real "love interest."

Christina Beyer Oof, shall I change it? I can think of a few more things that makes Sherlock seem kind and nice in that episode.
@christinabeyer92985 жыл бұрын
@@itzn1ghtm4r34 No, you must not change it. Par example cared Sherlock enough for Irene to save her from beheading, but it was not for love. It had more to do with the fact, that he simply couldn't let someone die, who has so great mental skills and also deserves for that reason a new life, but I assume, not alone, she took certainly her personal assistant and (girlfriend?) Kate with her. But the best thing for me that John was so obviously jealous of Irene in this episode.

Somebady can tell me why Im crying now? God i miss Sherlock so much :( btw Happy B-Day High Functioning Sociopath :)
@christinabeyer92983 жыл бұрын
Sherlock isn't a sociopath, not even a so called "high functioning sociopath" which don't really exist. "High functioning" is a term which is usually used for people in the autistic spectrum who are intelligent enough to adapt to the society and environment. Sherlock used the remark "High functioning sociopath" as a mask he hided behind to scare people off of seeing the truth and not to get hurt and bullied. Autistic people often speak of themselves this way to set theirselfs apart from others.

Just curious. Was his age ever actually stated in the BBC version? Or do people just use Ben's age? Because technically in a Study in Scarlet, Sherlock would have been about 27, but Ben was 33 in A Study in Pink. If Sherlocks age follows Ben's in the BBC version, then the gap between S3 and S4 creates an issue, as Mary was pregnant in S3 and still pregnant in the start of S4E1. She would have been pregnant for 2 years. Unless you see S4E1 as being more of a flash back. I know they mention he was a kid in 1989 when Carl Powers was killed, but 'kid' could be anything from like 4-14. If he was following Ben's age he would have been 13. I have a feeling from John's reaction that he was younger then that though. 'You did start young then' strikes me as actual kid and not young teenager. I imagine Victor disappeared when he was around 5 or 6, and it would make sense for Sherlock to come out of that being suspicious of everything, and bothered by a boy mysteriously dying like Carl did. I have a feeling the police didnt listen because Shelock was an actual child. Maybe as young as 7 or 8. So please, let me know if Ive missed something where they actually said his age outright, because otherwise it seems a bit off to me (for these and a few other reasons) to use Ben's age as Sherlock's without evidence.

On Sherlock’s grave, it was etched that his birthday is on January 6, 1977.

@@OneAllysa in which scene? Im just watching the graveyard scene in TRF back now and the grave stone just says his name, no dates. Is it in a flash back in a later episode maybe?

@@userbunny14 No, it isn’t shown in the episodes. But the tombstone was posted by Arwel Wyn Jones who is the Production Designer of Sherlock.

@@OneAllysa yes I see it, but that doesnt look like a typical headstone engraving either. Im also seeing some people saying he mentions at one point that he was 9 in 1989. So I guess tomorrow Imma rewatch the entire thing again for the 100th time listening for that lol I dont even know why it matters for me to find out.
