Jeremy Brett: What an actor. Surely among the greats. I'm sorry he's gone. This is one of my favorites Sherlock Holmes episodes; satisfyingly long, wonderful twists in the plot, so many sides of Holmes revealed.... His "I don't know how," is heartbreaking, as is his sorrow over his role against a man of such great evil that Holmes himself, the man of such rectitude, has compromised his view of himself.

Surely the lady murderer was the young woman's aunt who'd just lost her husband.
@kennethdawson77742 ай бұрын
@@marichristian1072 Yes. Milverton tried to blackmail her with letters between her and her lover and she refused to pay. So he sent them to her husband, the diplomat. Facing her infidelity broke his health and he had a stroke that eventually killed him. She did love and respect her husband despite the infidelity (she probably thought of her daliance as a way to just add a little excitement to her life, not anything like real love) , so she killed Milverton in revenge.

Funny how in the books (as far as I remember) Watson wrote this story many years after because the woman involved had died. But in here it's because Holmes is not proud of something he did. It's either the maid case or that he took the woman's brooch that could have incriminated her. What do you think?
@skullsaintdead9 жыл бұрын
+wodnyrak I believe it is in part, due to the deception of a sweet innocent, Aggie, but perhaps most importantly, the repulsion and evil of the man he is trying to stop, while knowing not one of the victims would be willing to sacrifice their reputations and go to the police, the frustration and helplessness he feels, being forced into a corner, with no option other than to rob the letters from that monster. He is ashamed by the lack of reasoning employed in the case, his inability to prevent a predator from preying on the vulnerable through his cleverness alone, and the ugly, narcissistic nature of humans who want money above all else and will happily destroy their friends and confidants to get it. I believe the taking of the lady's brooch would have comforted Holmes, as he knew she had suffered enough and was totally justified in taking his life, as payment for the many lives he had so eagerly destroyed. I don't know if its touched on in the book, but frankly, Milverton seems like a 'sexual deviant' or a sadist, who physically gets off on the emotional suffering of the rich or powerful, and who tries to hide his neglected childhood and pathetic, lonely existence with blackmail, power and money.
@NikhilKhandekar8 жыл бұрын
I think neither. It's rather his frustration and helplessness in face of such evil intent. There was also no scope for his intellect or powers of deduction. These, more than anything else, were the reason why he did not want this story to be told. The maid probably realised who the plumber was. If she didn't, she still saw no more of him. So that's the end of the matter, where Holmes is concerned. As for the brooch, I have no doubt that it was taken in order to shield the lady from further damage and was likely returned to her or otherwise suitably disposed of.

Perfect ending, I think. Although there is one thing: what was that burning in Athena's eye at the end?
@seedyoda57148 жыл бұрын
I know who Athena is, and I figured that it would have something to do with Holmes having felt guilty about resorting to force rather than using his powers of knowledge and wisdom, but I just wasn't sure what that burning thing is. Is it something inside of the statue, a piece of paper hidden there perhaps, that Holmes might have retrieved if he had approached the task with more delicacy and intelligence? That would surely have been one last blow to Holmes, with the added irony of him having shattered a bust of Athena. Or is it just Athena's punishing eye, or as you say Holmes own conscience, that is burning? Maybe the point is that we can't really have the intellectual fulfillment of knowing what it was because, in this case at least, wisdom was eclipsed.

a burning ember from the fire. according to wiki, Athena is known as bright eyed, one of many attributes, and was the goddess of justice, among other things.

I think the lady who shot at Charles Augustus crushed his eyes as her ultimate revenge as it shows bloody spectacle. At the end Holmes might be embarrassed by remembering it again with Athena's eye.

We, as the viewer, have the advantage of the fact that the scene we are watching has to be lit well enough for the audience to make out what's going on. Unless it's directed by Zack Snyder. Seriously, for people actually in this kind of late night, poorly lit environment, they might only get a quick, distorted look at the people involved. Anything that covers prominent features helps obscure their identity. Plus it looks cooler than a stocking over the head.

This plot has a loop hole...Sherlock has enough contacts in the seedy parts of town who can do CAM in for less than 10% of the amount he had asked from that Lady? Holmes knew CAM was a crook and could have hired anyone to take care of him? What about that Colonel who could have killed CAM or have him killed when he ruined his marriage.

I think it's mostly bc they're magazine fictional short stories, smooshed into scripts for tv. The originals are better of course, but without proper context, sometimes things are lost and scripts always require acting rather than written entertainment. Conan Doyle was writing for an audience looking like TikTok now. We're looking for entertainment for an hour and to be emotionally connected to a cast of actors over a decade. They're a different sort, and interesting to note. Obviously Holmes could off this guy but he wanted the big win. All those letters instead of one pile were burnt. Lady Swinstead unexpectedly showed up, but otherwise, dear Milverton would have been slapped into prison by Holmes and Lestrade. In the end, Milverton got what he dealt more directly.
@kennethdawson77742 ай бұрын
And if Milverton was killed all those blackmail documents could easily have fallen into the hands of others who would just continue the cycle. Killing Milverton was only an act of desperation by the woman whose husband he drove to death. Holmes wanted a certain end that a killing, no matter how morally justified or not, would not have necessarily produced.
@NikhilKhandekar8 жыл бұрын
No, not quite satisfactory. The focus shifted from the ingenuity with which the case was brought to its conclusion. It could have been much better some other way.
