Pleased to discover this series last night. I refuse to debate and compare. I' ve enjoyed many different Holmes re-creators. Cushing offers a strong alternative to Brett. We were quite pleased with this version. The audio and video are excellent for a 50 year old source. Looking forward to watching every episode.

This is an EXCELLENT rendition. Part of that being, of course, the instant and obvious attraction between Dr. Watson and the charming Miss Marsden. Cushing does Holmes very well too.

Edward Hardwicke and David Burke were both fantastic alongside Jeremy Brett, Nigel Bruce was good comic relief with Basil Rathbone, and Martin Freeman was nothing short of brilliant with Cumberbatch's modern take on the stories, but for my money, Nigel Stock (the Watson in these Cushing shows) might just be the best Watson. He's a good combination of intelligent, capable, and funny, while also still being properly in awe of Holmes' powers. His performance is really great.

Personally, I think that attitudes had changed enough that a colder and purely intellectual Holmes was more acceptable by the time Brett played him. Brett is the most accurate to the Conan Doyle Holmes. When Rathbone played Holmes, a more traditional hero was expected. One who could handle action well and who was more capable of warmth and homour. Bruce's Watson was turned into the comic relief, because movies at that time were expected to offer the entire entertainment package. I think that Cushing's natural kindness does show through a little in his performance, but he is such a talented and professional actor that it's not a problem, just an inevitability. In other words, Cushing is temperamentally unsuited to play the part, but also has the talent to still play it.

There a lot of opinions of who is the best Holmes and Watson here but if you are a Brit watching this, nostalgia comes into play and watching Cushing doing anything just gives a super warm feeling. Oh lord! Peter Cushing! I remember this series on TV. Peter was a lovely man with a great sense of humour (he regularly appeared on the Morecambe & Wise Show in the late 60s and early 70s), but he was not at all a good choice to play Sherlock Holmes. Jeremy Brett was far and away the best Holmes ever. (And bloody hell, look at Mary's hat! And that cape ...! I foresee 50 minutes and 23 seconds of immoderate laughter ...!)

howtoplanaparty, I suppose it is unobjective (if the word exists), but everyone is allowed to have their own personal opinions, or at least I should hope they are. I personally prefer Jeremy Brett and David Burke as Holmes and Watson, but other people are entirely free to express their own views.

Peter Cushing is not in the same class as Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone. Any Watson is better than Nigel Bruce--too old, too fat, too stupid. Watson as portrayed by Bruce offered no help to Holmes.

Cushing was very good as Holmes-I always thought that Douglas Wilmer and Nigel Stock were excellent.....Brett over-eggs the part with his overacting.

Oh, good grief. Doctor Watson (Nigel Stock) acted like a freaking masher after meeting the girl. Heck, the whole show (acting, actors, costumes, sets, etc) was over-the-top. I quit watching after only 15 minutes. Couldn't take any more.

Masher (noun); A man who is aggressive in making amorous advances to women.

Watson wouldn't have looked like a masher had they not changed the ending of the story once again! The lady in question here was (in the original stories) the future Mrs. Watson!

James .. Ah, I see. However, I'm afraid this Watson, at least at the beginning, would have still looked a masher all the same. LOL.

of course Rathbone is absolutely better than Cushing in this role ... Cushing is a giant but in this role Rathbone is THE one. And this Watson is a nothing in front of Watson playing with Rathbone... This watson here playing the in love moron is very unpleasant to see.
