@@lars7747 On the firing range, where one could line up the shot nicely and calmly, it certainly could. But under combat conditions, it was not even reliably able to take out the latest Pz IV - sure, it could kill a Tiger, but you had to be lucky, and your crew had to know exactly what they were doing. And many Shermans (as can be seen in Wardaddy's platoon) retained the original 75mil gun because the 76's HE shell sucked ass and was much longer (meaning the tank could carry less ammo), and in 1944 tank-busting infantry was a bigger threat than the rather small number of German heavy tanks that remained.

@@captainpancake8177 We adapted a few of the German doctrines after WW2. This is an SS crew. They surely saw action on the Eastern Front. Even if not they were trained before being handled a fucking tiger so they would follow some simple tanker steps in the doctrine. First tank in a column gets destroyed or disabled. Second shot is on the back most. While the others are bunched up and trying to turn they are easy pickings. That worked best in tight columns as well. The Fury and another 76 are priority targets. By 45 the Germans knew a 76 can pen them frontally at ranges they are engaging here, as well as the Firefly. They are identifiable by the distinct muzzle which at points crews went to lengths to take off or do a paint job on the barrel to make the tanks not realize they have the longer barrel immediately. Tigers were slow on the gear shifts. They have no reason to advance and expose themselves against shermans which need to be hit anywhere to be penned, jumbo was not here in the war or a pershing. All they had to do was back off from the ditch through smoke cover already there and pick them off, not giving them any chance to actually flank and hit them in the back. 76 , which has the muzzle would have been priority number one if he survived, not the punny 75s from the 2 tanks he took out first because Brad Pitt was not crewing them. It is very unrealistic, especially the end scene. Made to look cool. Also this is not berlin 1945. You wouldn't really see a tiger standing alone without infantry or more armor around or close by to hold a spot so wide as this with no actual choke points to funnel the enemy through.

@FrendlywolfVideos4 ай бұрын
As happened in the scene, the shermans would just smoke the tiger then decide whether to rush it or disengage and flank it, its ridiculous that the tiger missed so many shots but its equally ridiculous that the shermans drove straight at a tiger 700m away, they would have kept using smoke shells (since they were using them anyway) as they advanced, spread further apart as they pushed up to increase survivability, these are standard tactics used by every nation at the time. The tiger would 100% leave its hull down position once its been covered in smoke, staying put means death, it would more likely reverse and force the shermans to chase it through the smoke though, unless it couldn't reverse, then it would advance past the smoke to continue firing. If the shermans close the distance, the tiger cant fight back anymore, they don't have to get behind it, its sides are easy to penetrate, and the 76mm can probably penetrate the tigers front once its close.

There was a German officer or enlisted man, I can't remember, but he was extolling the undeniable greatness of the German tanks and talked about how superior they were to the Allied/American ones...his end quote went something like this "The Tiger was equal to 4 lesser American tanks...but the Americans...they always had 5". Our ability to mass manufacture tanks, that weren't as durable and deadly as the German ones, allowed us to win engagements with a superior vehicle. They made better ones, we made many more lesser ones that while being inferior in many ways...were still good enough when we buried them with the sheer amount we sent.
@codboroks97 Жыл бұрын
I just want to point out that the "superior" tanks Germany had were very uncommon on the western front. The majority of German tanks were simply on par with the Sherman, and neither had any issues destroying the other. The likelihood of a Sherman running into a Tiger during the war was negligible.

That would have been Soviets, but the Tiger was too mechanically fragile for Eastern Front conditions - 3 of the 4 Tigers that day simply broke down, and the fourth didn't achieve anything. Took two weeks to get the running again, only for all 4 to break down, one even irrecoverably. The Red Army tactic to deal with Tigers was like what Wardaddy's platoon tries here (zergrush them with T-34 til you can pop a shot in their butt), but in addition raking them with MG fire to break the optics. It was not too successful, but not as bad as the GI's experience after the Normandy landings - the Sherman was literally the worst contemporary Allied tank one could face a Tiger in: high, weakly armored, and horribly unbouncy. In broken country like the "bocage", a T-34/85 was not much inferior to a Tiger I, while a Sherman was just a rolling target with no hope of outflanking the beast and little chance of getting a penetrating hit either. Hence the Tiger's reputation. It was actually not such a good tank except under certain conditions, but the US troops first faced them under precisely those conditions. In 1944, the US troops would rather take a detour than fight Tigers, while the Red Army simply called in the ISUs which made good use of the fact that for all its bulk, the armor layout of the Tiger was basically WW1 grade, and a good hit with 152mil HE on those huge flat plates would cause enough spalling to shred the Tiger crew.

@@adrian4596 It might actually be a deliberate choice by the Tiger's commander: in the initial setup (front-facing, at range, ambushing), a 75mm HE knocking out optics/hydraulics/electronics would be a bigger threat to a Tiger than the 76mm AP (which was notoriously unreliable if aimed in a hurry). The 75mm and 76mm each had marked strengths and weaknesses. The 75mm was weak against heavy armor, but very versatile overall, while the 76mm was a dedicated tank-killer but its performance was highly situational. So the actual dilemma the Tiger commander is facing here is: take out the strong but less-than-reliable gun first, or the weaker but tactically flexible one? Or simply hit the first enemy you get a good aim on, and rely on your tank's fear factor? (A less hard-nosed CO than Wardaddy would likely have broken and ran.)

I really like the movie because it comes close to what certain events would have played out. Since this movie takes places in the last 6 months of the war we can assume the tank crew including the commander of the Tiger is seasoned. Very seasoned. So it would have shot the the first tank, not the last. Staggering the others. But skip that and get to point where the shermans fired smoke to conceal - I think that would have been a solid decision. Also pushing the Tiger since you got no way out because of forest behind you and a straight road. Its fight or flight with flight beeing out of the equation. The "push" seems to be a bit to much head on instead of trying to flank. But this is not a biggy. What is, is the decision of the Tiger to push and fire while moving. The moving forward part is explainable to come out of the smoke to get targets. After that: just silly. The Tiger relied on range to enemies (T34 and Shermans got penetrated well beyond 800m). It had a slow moving turret. Very poor accuracy on the move (all the WW2 tanks had) and whatever you do, you dont want the enemy to get close or even on your flank or back. So after the Tiger cleared the smoke the realistic thing would have been: stop. Aim at Fury (since it has more leathal 76' gun). Kill it. Aim to the other tank. Kill it. But its a movie after all.

I doubt that, at worst the engine would be dead and the tank would be on fire, but there could be a twist where WarDaddy says “Fuck it”, gets outta Fury, kills the Tiger commander and drops a grenade into the tank through the cupola killing the crew and basically somewhat damaging the tank maybe enough to ignite the ammunition. On a serious note, no, it would not have killed the Sherman, it’d have mobility killed it, the Sherman at that point already closed the gap and given the tiger crew was insanely incompetent, a round would be loaded after the tiger shoots their engine deck and then the tiger’s turret would turn into a ME-262 for a brief moment and yes the shot landed at the engine deck and most likely would’ve mobility killed fury, but it most definitely would NOT have blown up fury. So the conclusion is We have a dead tiger ( thanks to either Brad throwing a grenade through the cupola and into the turret or John reloads the gun and Shia lands a shot before the incompetent tiger crew could ), Fury is immobilized, fury crew live I guess because they don’t got a cannon anymore and a last stand would be useless

There were not that many tank on tank battles in WW2 because Sherman commanders knew to run like hell when they saw a Tiger. The plan for attacking a Tiger was to wait for it to break down and hit it with artillery, a tank destroyer or Air support.

"Now, this is where I cheat a little bit on the tactics - and all you military guys out there probably did a forehead slap when you saw this - is the Tiger actually shoots the last tank in the column. You're not supposed to do that, you're supposed to shoot the first tank in the column, which then forces the column to stop, and then you shoot the last one. And then you pick off the guys in the middle. So I know that I cheated because if they shoot the first tank, Brad's dead, movie's over, roll credits. That's not very fun." -David Ayer, Writer/Director of "Fury"
@MrDwarfpitcher Жыл бұрын
Well there is another thing. Fury is the tank with the gun to penetrate the tiger frontally. They could have shown that they tried to make the barrel less visible (crews often tried to make it look shorter by painting them) Moreover. The Tiger has the same armor on the sides as on the back. A Sherman only has to flank it. So all this time they have this tank with a gun specifically designed to pen heavy armor from the front. And they don't use it...
@Tank50us Жыл бұрын
@@MrDwarfpitcher fun fact, while this is true, it's not just the gun. You need the right ammo, and the special Tiger-killing (HVAP) ammo wasn't issued very much if at all, even to 76mm Shermans. Main reason being: It was expensive AF to make, and by the time of D-Day, the American TCs were happy with the Shermans performance, even against Tigers and Panthers. And many of them felt that having a couple HVAP rounds in stowage took up space for other rounds which would be more useful (since even after D-Day, tank encounters were pretty rare for the US Army)
@redbarrelentertainment Жыл бұрын
@@Tank50us HVAP wasn't necessary to punch through the front plate of a Tiger if from a 76 M1 cannon. It would if it were a shot from one of the 75s, but the APC-T shell from the 76 was more than enough to smoke its UFP.

I wonder how painful it is after getting your tank shot twice and the metal clanking from high velocity anti-tank rounds that would totally destroy your eardrums or rupture or organs from vibration even tho tiger is powerful i wonder how soldiers handle those situations.
@georgecoventry8441 Жыл бұрын
Well, my father drove a British scout tank in that war. They handled it simply because they had no other choice at the time, and this was the same for the people on both sides. The sheer noise of being inside those things when they were running, whether or not you got hit by enemy fire, tended to ruin people's hearing after awhile, and my father had poor hearing for the rest of his life because of it. He was lucky that they never took a direct hit from the German tanks and anti-tank guns. One of the latter, hidden in some bushes, very nearly hit their turret on one occasion, just as they mounted the crest of a hill, but missed them by an inch or so, and apparently the shock wave alone shook the whole tank "like a dog shaking a rat", as he put it. They got the hell back behind the hill in a couple of seconds and called in some airplanes, which quickly knocked out the German gun, killing its crew. That was how they usually dealt with such situations, given that the Allies had total air superiority in the fighting over Normandy and France...just call in the fighter bombers. There wasn't a thing the Germans could do about it. Their planes were back defending the Reich against the Allied bombing campaign or trying to hold off the Russians in the East. They had nothing much left in the air to put over the western front...and that made it impossible for them to win the campaign. But they could still kill you. Not a situation anyone wants to be in, that is for sure.

Fun fact: Shermans are not for tank battles. They're an all-purpose support tanks used to take down enemy positions and building, that's why the 75mm gun was enough for that purpose but not for penetrating enemy armor. It's also why it takes a Sherman platoon to take down 1 Tiger. In reality, there's a good chance that the whole platoon would be wiped out in this scenario. Not to mention, the Tiger wouldn't leave its position since its main gun can hit enemies up to a kilometer.
@dannyzero6922 ай бұрын
Shermans were quite capable in the anti-armor department when it made its combat debut, the Panzer III and IV’s armor cannot handle the Sherman’s 75mm AP round. It’s also about doctrinal use as well as logistical limitations that shaped the Sherman into what it was, but that topic is irrelevant.

That is not the point. Tanks in that era were designed for frontal assaults. They were pretty resilient from the front and sides (as the movie indicates) however the rear end was quite vulnerable. If the attack was from the rear, they were fighting with little armor between them and the attacker. In some circumstances, their armor would actually be working against them.
@suchopsmimic399 Жыл бұрын
People who are upset with this scene need to understand that this is the last working tiger. Those that lended it to the producers of the film required it only be driven forward and if I remember correctly, only turn the turret to one side. They did what they could with what they had. Doing this was better than than doing literally nothing. They actually paid the tiger great respect by managing to get this specific tiger in the film.
@dgbsturmnovik299 Жыл бұрын
Dude what are you on about? Have you watched the video? The tank is driving forwards AND backwards and is turning the turret to both sides. This scene is just made to look cool just as the one where they drive towards that treeline where two anti tank guns just miss randomly. Hollywood at its best.
@suchopsmimic399 Жыл бұрын
@@dgbsturmnovik299 I may have been wrong about only going forwards unless the 2 seconds of reverse you see is CGI. But aside from that there is only 1 second where the barrel is visibly turning right. And that's when the tanks are viewed from a birds eye view for like one second, which looks extremely CGI to me. Everything else is camera tricks. Notice how 99% of the time the turret is to the right it's just sitting there. More than likely the turret was just turned all the way around from the left if I am correct. Truthfully I can't remember what video I watched that mentioned the heavily restricted movement but even if I can't, you can clearly see the cannon exclusively turning to the left and only reversing for a split second. Also the scenes aren't that bad. Nicholas Moran reviewed them and said himself that aside from a few mistakes they were pretty good.
@johnanon693811 ай бұрын
@@suchopsmimic399 Yes but there was a second tank with a physical mockup of the top of Tiger 131 that was placed on a modern tank chassis with the lower half painted blue for the CGI to show the wheels. But the film footage of Tiger 131 moving out of the brush across the field is of the real Tiger which is the only running original Tiger tank left in the world. Also any naysayers can doublecheck against the video The Tank Museum released today titled "FURY - How a Museum with a Sherman Made a Movie", cheers!

Not exactly. This was more of a Red Army T-34 tactic, but in a situation such as this, a Sherman platoon (particularly a mixed-gun one like here) could have done it from sheer desperation. Usually though, they would simply have retreated and taken a detour. You could easily outrun a Tiger in a Sherman, after all - even if the Tiger didn't break down ;-)

Who freaking cares? It’s realistic in that it STILL depicts how American tanks were outclassed. But then American tanks STILL WON…because we pumped our WAY MORE. Economics won WWII. Some historians I think correctly argue one of the very reasons the Germans lost was their obsession of building the most expensive intimidating tanks. You see here, again…a touch of realism still…, that Sherman’s could still penetrate the rear armor of the bulkiest tigers. Americans then won by simply churning out way more cheap but EFFECTIVE tanks. We had way more tanks for our infantry and way more tanks to EVENTUALLY destroy the German tanks (did you know the Germans at the end had plans to even design tanks the size of houses? Lol). My only gripe with this scene is maybe added a couple more tanks that also got blown up to really highlight how many tanks it still took to take out 1 German tank and that even though Shermans proved superior to tigers economically for this kind of war (tigers couldn’t even cross bridges they were so heavy) that didn’t mean American tankers were happy to be treated as clear canon fodder ti German tankers.
