I raised Huskies for 25 years. After listening to your description of Sherpa's condition, I would say, based on my experiences, that you have made the right decision in getting specialists to anesthetize and extract his tooth. Things can only improve once the tooth is removed. Getting that tooth out is most important. I have had a number of senior dogs, with medical conditions that required surgery. I have heard the warnings of many good vets concerning a dog's ability to return to consciousness after the procedure. In my experience, we often vastly underestimate a dog's ability to survive. In Sherpa's case, his chances are enhanced by having an anesthesiologist, with their supplemental tools, attending to him. I, like his many fans, am pulling for his speedy recovery. Hang in there.

Prayers for you and Sherpa. I had a Husky/Chow that lived to be almost fifteen, we adopted him at 2 1/2 years old. He developed a fatty tumor right next to his privates at 11 years old, looked like an utter, caused all kinds of problems, and I had to roll the dice on him getting surgery to remove it. He was fine after that, but at around 14 years old, he developed old-age diabetes. I had to give him insulin injections twice a day, tons of vet visits, had to put an antibacterial additive to his water, and eventually I had to build him ramps to get in the car and build an elevator for him to get down to the yard to do his business. It's a labor of love when they reach old age.

Years ago we inherited a very eldely dog when my Grandma died. The vet said 'I know she's old, she needs a big operation but I think she deserves a chance'. Just don't be surprised if the surgery makes the Horner"s Syndrome worse. If the tooth is the problem, it will get worse, but start getting better and stay better. I dealt with that when my cat had a persistent and nasty ear polyp.

I've already been praying for Sherpa the moment I could see that Sherpa needed prayers, several months ago. But tonight I saw the post under my comment to pray for Sherpa by Saint Roch ( the Patron Saint of dogs). Roch is pronounced "Rock". However, I have always prayed to Saint Francis of Assisi who is also a Saint for animals. For now I will pray to both of them for a fast recovery for Sherpa.

Hopefully, I can make you less nervous? I adored a Pug I had for, get this 20yrs. Marvin had 5 teeth pulled at age 15yrs. Being so small, they had 5 Vets during the Surgery. He loved me so much? He made it & gave me 5 more amazing years to love him. Sherpa has the deepest connection with you I have ever seen. He will fight for you Jamie. I know we're all Praying for you both. As the owner of an old dog with health problems I understand how worried you are. I will keep everything that is crossable crossed for you both for his operation. I know it is difficult because you obviously love him so much (what’s not to love) dogs are often more robust than we give them credit for. Good. When they remove it, they will be able to get a good cleaning to get rid of as much of the infection as possible. I assume they will also give him IV antibiotics or a shot to help boost the start of the process on top of taking home antibiotics. Great idea to get the scans. I actually recently started my cats on wellness core canned cat food since they are getting tired of the canned food they have been on. I also started them on some freeze dried rabbit. They get that every few days or so.

It will be a while. I remember when my Liam had several teeth worked on, he drooled like crazy for a month. 😂
