I could argue the point, but I won't. Obviously, Clapton is the better Rock and blues player of the three, but for hard country, Vince is surpassed by very few, if by any _(except Albert)._ But one who does surpass Vince by far is Albert Lee, but you wouldn't know it from this tune. "Tulsa TIme" isn't exactly hard country.... What I find truly amazing about VInce Gill is not only is he the best vocalist by far on that stage, but that he is such a good blues and rock player. _(I am a career player myself, originally out of Hollywood, BTW.)_
@jasonbroom71479 ай бұрын
@@paradisepipeco - All three can claim an incredible body of work. All three are remarkably talented lead guitar players. But, only one of them was also blessed with a voice for the ages...and I don't even have to tell you who it was, cuz e'rybody knows what I'm talkin' about. In terms of overall musical ability, there are only a handful of artists, from any genre, that belong in the discussion with Vince Gill.
@paradisepipeco9 ай бұрын
@@jasonbroom7147 Something I learned as a working guitar player, often inadvertently filling the awkward role as a _"ringer"_ out in the boondocks, being the only big city trained player for miles and miles..... is the fact that comparisons become irrelevant beyond a certain point. Few other than accomplished lead guitar players or dedicated aficionados understand what is the big deal about Clapton; because in that genre, guys like Slash, EARLY Van Halen, Angus Young _(et al)......._ when playing straight blues/rock as Clapton did; they all sound so similar as to almost be interchangeable. So what makes Clapton so special? What is not apparent is that B.B. King took what T-Bone Walker played and turned it into the entire modern blues style, becoming the primary paradigm _(et al; e,g: Albert King...)_ for Clapton and all who followed him. Virtually the entire vocabulary of modern blues based rock lead guitar is basically licks taken straight out of the lexicon of B.B. King by younger white players. If you listen closely to Clapton's solo on Cream's _"Strange Brew",_ and then listen to Albert King's solo on _"Crosscut Saw",_ something becomes very obvious. _(After that, you might wonder if Albert King and Eric Clapton were ever seen in the same place at the same time, if you get my meaning...)_ But the thing about Clapton and the other above named rock players who played in a similar style; the thing that is not readily apparent to everyone is *_who is copying who....._* B.B. copied T-Bone, Eric copied B.B. _(and Albert, and Freddy King, et al)_ and Angus, Slash, Eddie _(in the beginning)_ copied Clapton. Stevie Ray copied Hendrix and Albert..... George Jones copied Hank and Lefty, and Robert Johnson copied Son House. But my real point is that beyond a certain point, competitive comparisons become totally irrelevant. Was B.B. King better than Albert? Can one woman be _MORE_ pregnant that another? If an artist can take you into his or her hand, take you on a journey and show you the spirit and magic of music and all it brings..... and another artist can do the same..... what is the point of wondering who is _"better"?_ Was Jimi Hendrix better than Vivaldi? Is a shotgun any better than a flyswatter if the flyswatter can do the job, especially without creating any new unplanned windows or skylights in the process? Is Ricky Scaggs _"better"_ than Vince Gill? Is Abraham Lincoln _"deader"_ than JFK? Is chocolate better than sex? Did the modern Rhino evolve from the unicorn? Were Peter Green's legs _REALLY_ thin? _(If six turned out to be nine, would you mind? Jimi didn't.)_ Cheers. *_"If we had some ham, we could have some ham and eggs, if we had some eggs."_* ~~ Groucho Marx *_"When the wise man points at the moon, the fool stares at his finger."_* ~~ Mokèlé Mbèmbé _(For further study, please refer to my "Top 40 from the Back 40" playlist. It isn't what you think.)_ 🙊🙉🙈
@jasonbroom71479 ай бұрын
@@paradisepipeco - No, Skaggs isn't a better singer, or all-around musician, than Vince Gill. He IS a better mandolin player, because he was one of the best ever. Your point is incredibly valid, though...is a van Gogh better than a Rembrandt? Is Richard Smith better than Chet Atkins? Has anybody ever flat-picked a guitar better than Billy Strings? Has there ever been a better slide guitar player than Derek Trucks? When musicianship reaches the level of artistry, comparisons become more a matter of opinion and perspective than anything objective or measurable. Personally, I think Knopfler was better than Clapton, but they're both so damn good, does it really matter?

I remember watching this whole concert. An all were great... John Mayer on his set was OFF the chain..the man can do so much with just a drummer & base guitaris back up. An Sheryl Crow..her songs were amazing, an so deserviing of being with these legends. Gonna go back and watch those old videos again. Must have been awesome to be in the audiance...so cool.

Albert Lea is so underrated… in this performance he is happy to just play third fiddle to EC and VG.

That's VERY Albert Lee, not the man to seek celebrity, lets his music talk for him.

Albert Lee is just a 'normal', everyday sort of guy who happens to be fantastic on a guitar. No 'edge' to him at all, a pleasure to meet.
