My supertunias have died year after year during the hottest parts of the summer. This year, I decided to do some maintenance in hopes of helping them survive the summer heat.

Good morning lovely lady. The proven winners fertilizer I think also has the iron that is used to help with the yellowing leaves with green veining. Learned this from 'Garden Answer'. Something you could look for the next time you use the fertilizer. Anyways I think your supertunias will survive by doing this. Enjoy your gardens and have a wonderful rest of your day.

Let me join you in crying for supertunias that died before fall. Argh! Some things to consider. Proven Winners plants, wonderful though they are, are bred for different conditions than we have in zone 8a. (I'm in coastal southeastern NC..)The lovely annuals originate at Pleasant View Gardens in Loudin, New Hampshire. Shorter growing season, not as hot. I do think regular pruning, consistent watering, and regular feeding helps the supertunias. I grew jazzberry in containers last year with gold trailing lantana. Performed wonderfully. I lived for many years in southern Michigan where there are a lot of Proven Winners growers. The summers there are lovely. Warm days and cooler nights. At night, the temperature in my garden can be 85 degrees with 80% humidity. You took steps to give your plants a chance. I'm taking those same steps, even though my temps are not as severe as yours.

Those munchkins are so cute! The PW fertilizer is also going to help with the chlorosis because of the EDDHA chelated iron. Should make the leaves nice and green 😊Thanks for sharing.

I'm zone 7, Maryland, and I had already trimmed back the petunias and verbena I have in a railing container. Last year I got 3 rounds from my verbena, so I'm definitely on the side of cut back!! I hope they make it for you. I think the color from the sunflowers will hold you over. I've seen other people "roll up" their bubblegum petunias at the end of the season and it's nuts how big they get and the space they cover!!

Great video! Half of my supertunias have died too, I'm in Mckinney. That early heat wave we had in June was horrible 😩. I think I'm going to try to do the same and see what happens. Last year, only 3 out of the 10 bubble gum petunias made it through the summer. I kind of want to try something more heat tolerant next year, but I just love the vigor and color of the bubble gum supertunias! We'll see! Good luck with them flushing back!

Hi, I think your going to see a big improvement on those petunias, looking forward to seeing them in a couple of weeks, my periwinkle vinca leaves were looking so yellow, I used that smelly fish fertilizer and it really helped, also one of my favorite petunias are silverberry , they have a hint of pink in the center, it looks nice with other bright flowers in my window box, this year I'm using Supertunia Limoncello in window box with others and liking it too, enjoy the garden & stay cool, Happy Gardening, Ann

Before the foliage starts struggling, do a monthly pruning. Cut back about 1/4 of the plant. Also, from the beginning of its growth, feed it with about a half strength of blue feed 20-20-20 every week to 10 days

Thank-you for this video. It came at the right time. My supertunia Vista bubblegum are looking stressed. We just came out of a 110° and will have a brief reprieve before going back up to 111°. It's a dry heat but plants don't like it. I will be cutting them back now. I also already have been using that same PW fertilizer once per week. I think I will step it up to twice per week. Happy gardening!

If you are having temps into the 100s, you might actually want to step back on the fert or keep the same frequency, but dilute it by half (½ tbsp/ gallon). Lots of fert can stress them more in high temps.

I am in Northern California with 3 year old supertunias, I cut back for the first time this late spring. I cut back more than you did because they were in worse shape, they are now growing back. Some are only a few inches others much bigger. All are looking great. We can’t buy them here so I need to do what I can to save what I have. Mine are all in large pots and water troughs. I deworm and feed them often. I am zone 9b. Very hot and dry. Grape growing area. I will be cutting back my biggest one today. It is a show stopping monster that got leggy and dry woody stems but still growing great. Good luck with your tunias.

I'm a few hours south of you, I cut mine back a little bit after a few weeks to make sure they're branching and not getting spindly and growing evenly. I usually do a ⅓ cut back twice in a summer. This year I had deer issues, pruning them for me 🙄. I had one bubblegum in the ground with great drainage, drip irrigation, looking fabulous and nearly 3'. In the morning it was great, a few hours later all the leaves were limp/shriveled but the blooms were still going. Gave it a prune by half and removed the blooms to help it recover, it never recovered. I do find vista series do better for me, the others are more limp and spindly and don't last nearly as long. Mine have gone to mid October, but usually are looking a bit rough the few weeks before I pull them. I've had issues with mites and leaf hoppers the last couple of summers. There's also another fertilizer, Jack's FEed. I got it on Amazon last year. Both PW and Jack's have iron supplement in them. I guess petunias and calibrachoa have a harder time absorbing iron. I'm a big fan of verbena, especially superbena. I have found they will lull a bit and struggle a little in mid summer, but come back well in the fall. I put those and petunias in a morning sun only position or part sun when it gets really hot. They usually do fine, less blooms, but I'm just helping them survive.

I’m curious if you can stem root any of this plant cuttings to clone plant. By the time the heat has passed you can have a new plant. Isn’t this what growers do? You can do this with hybrid tomatoes so it would be awesome if you could with annuals. Has anyone tried this before?

I don’ normally purchase annuals because of a limited budget but I will be very tempted to try these Supertunias if yours bounce back. I think they are gorgeous! Probably probably pink is my favorite but all of the colors are amazing. I’m very anxious to see if this helps. Hoping for the best. You mentioned candytuft. First time trying it. Does it normally die back or just look horrible during the middle of summer? One plant is green, one is not but neither is flowering. Same location but one might get a little more water from the sprinklers. I really like the plant and trying to keep both alive but it’s not looking good. It was looking great until the last few weeks. Any advice? I’m guessing too much sun, or not enough water or both. 🤣 I cut the bad one way back, watered and fertilized.
