Thank you for letting us ride around! It makes a place become real, when you're allowed to ride shotgun and see a place (without commentary) and not on some silly tourism promo video...just the raw, real place. Love it!

I loved this video! We visited Shetland this past September and seeing this video brought back many memories. To the poster below - Shetland is far more than cottages surrounded by sheep. It's a beautiful jewel that you should take the opportunity to visit. And while the scenery is magnificent, the air the freshest I've ever breathed, it is the wonderful people of Lerwick that bring back my fondest memories.

Hi Jimmy, I was in Shetland 78-82 building the terminal at Sullom Voe. We had a cottage at Wethersta, near Brae. It was one of the best times in my life and I loved the place. I'm now almost 67 and I've "been back" several times but only through Google Maps alas. This time of year I think of Up Helly A and the massive amounts of snow we had back then, where it'd be on the road for 3 months and everyone just got on with it. I always watch "Shetland" and wonder if people think its as dangerous and crime ridden as the programme would suggest...when I was there we never took the keys out of the car nor thought to lock the door, and if somebody was walking on the roadside the first car along stopped to pick them up...it might be you next time. Loved the wee vid so thanks

Well, I loved it that you drove around slowly enough to put a bottle of milk on every doorstep. It was just what I needed to see. I've been in New York for over 25 years and I have it in my mind to get out of the States to retire -- have been looking at Scottish islands and love the way this town lies, from a bit higher and inland right down to the water. I'm from New England originally, and this looks real good to me. I may meet you some day, jimmydukens. Thanks for the town tour!

Sloth from The Goonies Only joking. It's not a bad place to live and the barren landscape has it's own beauty. Like the rest of GB we have a multitude of races and cultures as well including our fair share of the Polish, Czechoslovakian etc influx. Not quite sure how much more road traffic we can cope with.
@slothfromthegoonies82019 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Neill It's the same across Scotland I suppose. The building materials lead to grey houses that are matched by the sky :L. It would look nicer if there were more trees. How do trees/plants fair in that climate? It seems to me that most of the island has been deforested.
@jimmydukens9 жыл бұрын
It's the lack of shelter from the salty gales coming off the sea. There are plenty of nice green areas in the towns and gardens where the shelter is. You are right about the grey skies though. There's been no summer this year.
@slothfromthegoonies82019 жыл бұрын
+Jimmy Neill What constitutes a good summer on Shetland? Apparently the highest temperature officially recorded in Lerwick was only 23 °C. It makes our mainland UK summers seem tropical :L. The temperatures seem to stay in a very narrow band, hovering around the same number almost constantly. Although the winters seem quite favourable, with the temperatures rarely dropping below freezing, the record low being just -8°C, which I found very surprising. It's a big bonus, because you have very little ice and frost, which can both be major headaches for various reasons.

Lerwick has a latitude of 60.1550° N, but your winters seem quite mild considering your northerly position. I guess that’s the Gulf Stream for you. The Shetlands have a similar latitude to anchorage in Alaska .

Here is a good site for you to visit. It will help you find out online what is available. I would also look at life in Shetland. It is a beautiful place but it is the farthest North in Britain and access to the mainland is an expensive hour on a plane or a 12 hour overnight trip on the ferry.
