This brought back so many memories. I was stationed in Japan in the USAF 1969-1972. By the way, I am gay. One weekend a gay friend and I went on a double date with two beautiful Japanese girls in full kimono (who knew we were gay). We went to a Chinese restaurant at the New Otani Hotel in Tokyo. Our waiter was a very handsome Japanese man. During our meal he kept making eye contact with me and I sensed he was interested in me. The very next weekend I went back to the restaurant by myself. His name was Yoshiuki Katagiri and our relationship began then. We celebrated our first anniversary together by going to the Meiji Shrine in kimonos and paying respect to his ancestors and committing ourselves to each other. Unfortunately he passed away in 1972. At least I had 2 1/2 wonderful years with him.

@@markmark1028 Yes, of course I feel better now. This happened 48 years ago. I hadn't really thought of Yoshi much until I saw this video. That's when all the memories came flooding back, both good and bad. But I wouldn't trade any of those memories for anything.

A big thank you to all the people who liked my post. And no dislikes! That makes me feel so good. I hope you don't think I am babbling now, but the video brought back another memory that was both sad and beautiful at the same time. It was the funeral. I don't know how things are done now in Japan, but back then a viewing of the body was not done in a funeral home but at the home of the deceased. In this case it was Yoshi's family home. Since his family knew and accepted that Yoshi and I were in a relationship, I was welcomed into the family. At the funeral only the immediate members of the family are allowed to sit in the viewing room and greet people who come to pay their respects. I was honored that Yoshi's family included me as part of the family with them in the viewing room. Since Yoshi would be cremated his body was displayed in a plain wooden box. Surrounding the box was a table that had things on it that had special meaning to Yoshi in his life...favorite food, drink, book, etc. To my surprise there was also a large framed picture of Yoshi and me smiling at the camera in our kimonos at the Meiji shrine. It was sad enough having to see Yoshi in that box, but when I saw the picture I started crying uncontrollably. His family including that picture touched my heart so deeply. I won't go into detail, but the hardest part of all of this was going to the crematorium. Again, only the immediate family was allowed to go to the crematorium and, since I was considered part of the immediate family, I was obligated to go. This is where I will not go into detail because it was a bit frightening and painful to experience. It is 48 years later and I am now 72, but these memories have become vivid again and I am so thankful for that.

I do not know how many times I have watched this video. It just brings me so much peace and hope... Yet, it still has brought me somewhat affliction. I am bisexual. At the beginning when I just figured it out I started dodging everyone, I did not want to accept who I was becoming (as if something was wrong with me) I was afraid of start falling in love with my best friend and what other people would say, so I cut my relationship with her down without a single word, I just disappeared. Not much time later I started dating a guy, he was not only my partner but also a special friend to me, so when we broke up I just could nor hold his departure... I sink into grief and sorrow, life had no meaning... but she the one who once more time came into my rescue, my lovely friend who I once ignored was there to bring happiness into my life. You might be wondering whether or not we start dating... well, we did not. It is necessary to once again learn to love myself before I can get to love someone else. My current path is all about what I want... who I am, and who I want to become... for some reason this video gave the energies I needed. It does not matter if my future belongs alongside a woman or a man because now I deeply believe that love is energy, that is what we are "energy" which one day will find its path. And so when the time shows up I will fight for it. You guys are an inspiration not only for me but for all people who are still fighting its internal demons. Because probably (sorry if I make assumptions) you guys had to face challenges all along the path of your relationship, gossip, rejection, doubt... and yet here you are sharing your incredible path and love. Thank you, for showing us again that life is beautiful, worth it, and full of surprises all along the way. Congratulations! May the future let you guys go back one more time wearing your gray hair.
