Shibori folding tutorial

Learn nine basic folding, clamping and tying techniques to pattern your fabric when you are fabric dyeing. Based on traditional shibori techniques, this tutorial uses simple items found around the home to create unique patterns on cloth.

Great tutorial! One question? How do you apply the dye with this technique? Do you submerge the fabric or squirt the dye on using a squirty bottle?

+SMELLTHEBULL thanks for asking. I usually make up a dye solution including the soda ash for fixing and immerse the folded pieces in the solution. A plastic bag works well as you need less solution and can 'squidge' the pieces around in it easily. You can squirt dye on too and use several different colours, it just gives a different look.

Hi Antonio. You'll need to find fabric dyes that are suitable for whatever fabric you are using. I use procion fibre reactive dyes because these work on the cotton fabrics I use for quilting. And yes, they need a fixative, soda ash in my case, but wherever you buy your dyes from should be able to provide you with instructions specific for the dyes you purchase. Procion dyes, when fixed properly, are permanent and can be washed.

Sound is rubbish, and the techniques before 3:30 are just basic tye-dyeing stuff, things everybody and their mother did when they tye-dyed t-shirts and random things when they were kids. Hell, I learnt that and more in primary school.
