lmao i love watching the furmoms comment about how using prongs and ecollars (negative reinforcement) is abuse yet they feed their dogs purina, declaw their cats, think when their small mutts bark at people and other dogs thinking it’s cute, and letting their dogs run around the place being a absolute nuisance. it’s not abuse if you are using the tools responsibly and properly.

I think you mean positive punishment not negative reinforcement. Negative reinforcement means taking away reinforcement. Positive punishment means adding something to the equation that serves as a punishment. Positive and negative doesnt actually mean good and bad.

Okay, for the people who don't know any better about e-collars: The unit he's using has 0-100 levels of correction. The cheaper units typically have 10-15. The problem is, their bottom setting of number 1 is at about level 20 on this guy's control. Most dogs, even Mastiffs and Great Danes, work at the single digit level. Some may require more, but not often. You're not using the collar to "correct" the dog as much as communicate that they should pay attention. I have personally placed the prongs against my neck, and it took until about level 14 before I could even feel it. Yes, cheap collars are garbage anc can hurt your dog. So can the stupidity of not having them properly trained and keeping them safe.

Good to see dog trainers that haven't lost their senses with "positive only training". All decisions have consequences in life, so avoiding safe corrective tools only lets you and your dog down. BTW, these are the same people that prefer to kill a dog, rather than use these tools... E Collars, Prong Collars etc, are all humane when not abused, just like any other tool. I have an intact GSD with high drive, he's 14 months old. He absolutely adores me because he knows what the boundaries are and we have a real relationship.

Excellent comment about the consequences. I bring this up all the time when I tell people that, when housetraining a dog, I do correct the dog when I catch him in the act. I tell them that in order for a dog to be fully housebroken, he needs to not only understand that it's good to relieve himself outside, but that it's actually bad to relieve himself inside. Because otherwise it's unreliable. And the same goes for all kinds of training. The dog needs to learn that responding in a certain manner to a command is appropriate and good, but also that not doing so is unacceptable. It shouldn't be the dog's choice. Recall especially. It can be life or death for a dog, and it can mean the difference between keeping other people and animals safe or allowing accidents to happen. It NEEDS to be reliable. Dogs NEED to understand that they absolutely must recall when commanded.

I can respect some of the comments here regarding abuse. A collar CAN be abusive, and it CAN cause all the side effects mentioned including health issues IF used improperly. I find it hard to believe that insulting others and acting like a child will get that point across however. I would like to mention with all due respect that Shieldk9 stated "At a very low level," "just enough for the dog to feel it." I am unclear how so many jump right to "abuse" or "shocking" or "zapping" from that. In fact, I am unsure how a prong collar alone and tugging at the dogs neck is any better. I love animals, but proper training, like a child is necessary for proper behavior. Yelling, slapping, hitting, kicking, shocking could all be considered abuse. Please note again however he is not "SHOCKING" the dog, its no more then a pulse/feeling to get the dogs attention. Dogs can feel lots of things including a pet, or a kiss, or love. They are not stupid, and they can tell when there is too much, and will respond with a yelp or aggression as would a human. I would encourage respectful non child like responses if any. You may not agree with him, but you are the one watching the video by no force of anyone. Thank you ladies and gentlemen.

How do you deal with a dog who performs well when the collar is on, but becomes disobedient without the collar? My BC has been stubborn as a mule since the day I got him. He knows the commands perfectly well, and will obey when he's wearing an E-collar or when he's a bit bored, but if he can get away without obeying he will.
@abettermind

I encountered the same issue, and mixing in leash corrections on a long line, and using my hands to force the dog into position fixed it rather quickly. Showing them that you can physically control them will make them respect you rather than the collar. I only use the ecollar when at distance and off leash. Unlike most people, I want the dog to know that the correction is coming from me, at least if the dog is smart enough to be collar or leash wise. I'm not a professional trainer, so don't take that as scripture, but it worked for me. The dog knows that when I day NO, the tool doesn't matter, the fact that a correction is coming does.

@DougHinVA
@DougHinVA 5 жыл бұрын
electronic collars are not to 'shock ' a dig and coerce it. An e-collar is to do commands at a distance that a long line/leash cannot reach and faster. 'working level' is the term pros use to denote a low level barely felt .... just enough to get the dog to show he is feeling the stimulation (usually a mild head shake or looking for a 'bug' type response). You learn to use an e-collar from an experienced trainer.... not as a DIY project. You can ruin a dog with your ignorance.

Know this is very late but the e collars usually have a tone (vibrate) mode so even if you want it to only vibrate (more like if you have a deaf dog) is still get an e collar. And most of the time the vibrate is more intense for a dog than the stim. And the variable levels on the stim make it more effective imo

@@lokilockness2970 I strongly discourage you from using a husky as a service dog. A husky was NEVER intended to do that. They were primarily bred for dog sledding and mushing, hence, they ADORE running and pulling weights. I strongly suggest you go and watch the movie "Togo" or read about the history of dog sledding as you will soon discover that this is what they were intended to do. Huskies were never bred to serve humans emotionally, having an independent spirit that enabled them to fend for themselves in the frigid conditions of the north when food was scarce. Although it is possible to train a husky for service, it is harder than some breeds and they will only tolerate it. I suggest other breeds that were bred for that purpose such as labradors or golden retrievers.

Shieldk9 Dog Training honestly? People do this to avoid "accidental" litters and to avoid certain types of cancers. (And many other reasons) Having your dog behave better is only a plus (not always the case, either), and even so it won't make a difference if you don't train along with it. Why would you spread false information? I don't see how you could qualify as a dog trainer. My dog was once reactive and is now fully trained (and intact) using positive reinforcement. You're being far too biased to be handling anyones' dogs.
@shieldk9
@shieldk9 7 жыл бұрын
Chewie The Groenendael Cutting the sexual parts off your dog does not change its Behavior. Recent studies have shown that intact dogs actually live longer then dogs that are fixed by and large. As for preventing accidental litters unless you are letting your dog run wild with other intact dogs it's not going to happen. If you are doing that perhaps owning a dog is beyond your competence level? So yes cutting sexual parts off your dog it's simply a matter of convenience since people do it because they believe like you that it actually changes behavior :). Currently its proving difficult to get her to obey commands without treating, especially recall, but I'm sure she's more than capable of being an immaculately trained and loved dog. I'm not looking to be called out for abusing my dog because she is the second most important part of my life. I'm just looking for methods to train her. Any negative response won't be dignified with a response.

Good video. I purchased one of the E-Collars. I have tested it on my arm in a sensitive spot and at level 10 it has a nice bite. My problem is the German Shepherd I am working with is not phased by this collar at level 10 or even when I hit the red boost button which is set at its default of 20. I shaved a spot on his neck to make sure I was getting a good contact but nothing. At no time during the introduction did he give any indication of a stimulus response. Am I doing something wrong? I have the unit set to continuous and continuous boost. I am familiar with electric collars having experience with tritonics in years past. The dog I am working with is going after the owner's horses. We have spent several months working with him on come, sit, sit-stay, heal, and down. By the way I ordered a new set of points for shepherds.

I’ve never been an advocate of e-collars although I’m sure that lots of people may have success with them. I’ve always wondered what happens when the e-collar comes off and your dog is expected to listen? Is it because it’s paired with the reward and the dog learns that once the collar is no longer being used? Or does the dog have to continuing wearing the collar for life? Also how would this technique work with a dog that is little more shy and insecure (like my young dog, who is training in a different way) unlike Nero who seems super happy and confident with a great personality. This trainer seems to know what he is doing, though. No criticism by any means....really just questions I have thought of...

Amy Saffos many of the dogs we train here have anxiety issues. As for what happens when the collar comes off. If you have laid your groundwork properly the dog will continue to be obedient. That being said why would you take it off? Is it so hard to put a collar on your dog? It is definitely more convenient then a leash.

Ok. Thanks for the response. I’ve known people who use them with great results I personally don’t want to keep one on my dog all the time because Im not sure I would be allowed to use it in obedience or agility in UKC or AKC. I’ll have to check into that. I have another puppy that’s headed that route and will start working with a show trainer soon. Just I’m not familiar because I’ve only shown horses and not dogs yet. Maybe when not in those situations i would use it? Although I DO know they are used in other events which is totally fine. BTW...I’m NOT...let me repeat NOT one of those people who thinks that e-collars are cruel AT ALL. Just a training tool I wanted to know more about and I haven’t been a fan of because of my lack of experience with them. I come from a place of open mindedness and would trust my trainer with what they felt would work best with my dog. Please don’t worry about answering me back with any response whatsoever. Really don’t need it after your last comments which seem a little defensive and harsh and like I said...I’m totally not one of those people I was just asking VALID, REASONABLE questions. Good luck in your training. You seem to be a good trainer but i personally am afraid to ask any other questions as you come across in a really short manner. Cool though. I’m sure you feel you have to defend yourself for these methods sometimes to some people. I’m just NOT One of them. I’ll just ask someone else but thanks for getting back to me as I really do appreciate that. That’s not sarcasm. Just an HONEST thanks.

@@amysaffos7108 I use ecollar, primarily for off leash safety. After a certain point I rarely have to use it, he still wears it for safety, for example I need to get him out of a dangerous situation like chasing a deer. But he does not wear it while we do bikejoring, he's well attached to the bike and I have control. While he does wear it while we do nose games I never use it while working scents because it's fun fun fun time. There is no difference in our relationship if the collar is on or off, his drive to work with me is not dependent on the ecollar but the ecollar has helped our relationship because it can reduce conflict and allows us to go on adventures he loves. The ecollar is "layered" onto existing obedience, the dog should already know the expectations, understand the communication and be engaged. So it is true if the foundational obedience is already there, it shouldn't matter if the collar is on or off.

there is no such thing as a show cut the dog must have a ears cropped for it to be eligible in shows at least in America of course it depends on the show you’re going to as well but that’s besides the point Dobermans have to have their tail docked and their ears cropped before they’re allowed in the show ring when I say show I mean an actual ring where you literally just run around a ring and judges decide which one looks better in sport shows would you actually have things like herding IPO and other dog sports and in those it doesn’t matter you can have an absolute Mutt unless it’s a breed-specific/purebred competition what I mean by pure bed competition is you can bring any dog they just must be purebred and that’s generally just so they don’t have mutts in there not outperforming Rottweilers

I don't see why it's a problem if it doesn't cause any harm to the dog. I'm not for it or against it, I honestly don't care. I love animals just as much as you and I see no problem with this. If done correctly by a vet it's fine. My schnauzer has a cropped tail. Did that stop me from buying him? Hell no! Because he's a great friend no matter what he looks like. This Doberman is clearly loving life and I'm sure he'll be loving it even more with this training! Most dogs need the stimulation of a prong or an ecollar to get the point across. That's not harming the dog, and if you think it is you need to read up on these training tools. I wouldn't do anything to my dog that I wouldn't do to myself. He's my best friend and I'm not going to let him go without proper training so he can cause himself, me, other dogs and other people problems. This is humane enrichment and I promise you the dog is grateful for it.

@@doglover140 a dog will shake its head when the collar vibrates because it tickles and they have the urge to shake it off or scratch it as if a bug had landed on them. I use a e collar on my dog, vibrations and beep only because I hate the idea of shocking her. I have shocked myself with the collar and it feels like someone plucking your arm hairs. The name "shock collar" indicates that it is using electrical signals to shock the dog. Which most of the times is not the case. My dog associates the E collar with fun things because she gets to run around and sniff and only has to come back if I buzz the collar for a second. Most hunting dogs are trained using e collars because voices cannot carry as far as the signal and will get the dogs attention if they are getting too excited and distracted. It's more of a reminder to the dog that you still exist and you still expect then to listen to you. I hope this helps!

My gosh guys. Seriously. Using the lowest setting on an e collar like a vibration, ok, I wouldn't use it myself but I wouldn't freak out because of it. Put the prong collar this dog is obviously wearing? That has nothing to do with dog training. This is straight up cruelty if this dog is ever on a leash with this collar. In Germany these things are banned for a reason. My dog is super loving and also obedient while still being a dachshund and only trained with positive reinforcement. I see so many celebrities giving their dog into "doggie camps" where they are " trained" like this. I'm sorry but I can't take such nonsense. In my eyes those are people who are too lazy to train their dogs themselves and I would never give my dog to someone who thinks that way to train dogs is forcing them to do what you want, disguising it with "oh I reward him when he comes to me with a treat". Yeah fine thats the right start but punishment and violence is never a solution when it comes to dogs. Not even in the slightest. The only tools I use are love the relationship between me and my dog and a few tasty treats.
